In the 80’s , two of my buddies were Depeche mode completists. Poor souls. That band pressed EVERYTHING in multiple colour versions. 7inch singles & 12inch singles in , God knows how many , remixed versions , bootlegs , collections and all the albums likewise. I know for a fact that one of them is still going strong.

    I have two reasons:
    1) the RCA or Columbia House Record club copies tend to sound better.
    2) there were 2 versions of the same album put out I.e Dolly Parton Here you come again ( two completely different versions of two doors down). Or even a quadraphonic version had special additions.

MoFi pressings are usually considered to be slightly better than regular pressings, especially with today's releases, which are usually pressed from CD masters. I've never AB'ed a MoFi pressing next to an original and/or repress of an album, so I can't personally verify this.

I own multiple copies of many album. A neighbor was a hoarder and collected pails and pails of records. They were stored in poor condition, possible outdoors. I bought two pails of his albums (tons of Tull) and his turntable from his sister after his death. Many of the records were covered in mold. I had to cut off the sleeves and ultrasonic clean them. True to being a hoarder, many had never been played. As you may imagine the jackets are in horrible condition. I think that I have five copies of "Passion Play".

I will only own one version of a release. The main reason is usually due to limited storage space. If it happens to be color vinyl, standard black vinyl, picture disc or shaped, I'm fine with it either way. The only time I'll obtain another copy is if the current copy is either missing the sleeve, insert, innersleeve or poster. Another reason is if the sleeve is thrashed from splits and/or water damage, or if vinyl is warped, skips, scratched or has a manufacturing defect. In any of these cases, I'll usually donate them to friends or a thrift store as a last resort.

I have 2 copies of the album “Body and the Beat” released in 1984 by a New Zealand band called Dragon. This album was one of the main reasons why I wanted to start collecting vinyl in the first place. The first copy of this album that I purchased was a UK pressing. I got it thinking it would have the full uncut album version of the song Rain (one of my favourite songs of all time) but unfortunately it just had the radio edit version. Just a few short months ago, I was in my favourite record store just having a look, and I found another copy of this album. It look slightly different to my copy, so I ended up just having a listen to it in the shop, and surely enough, this pressing did have the full uncut version of Rain. Needless to say I snatched that up very quickly! I will add too that the uncut version of that song was never released on digital media for whatever reason. This is why I love vinyl! 🙂

I have two copies of Aerosmith’s first album called Aerosmith. the band hated the cover so when dream on became a hit they rereleased the album in 1976 with a new cover saying “featuring dream on” The first pressings also have a spelling error but I’ve yet to get that version yet.

The real first pressing of DSOTM is the solid blue triangle UK EMI A1/B1. That's the best sounding version, if you've got £900 to spare. The Mofi was cut by Stan Ricker, and is a little on the bright side. If you just want a stock US pressing, the one you should get is a Winchester VA pressing cut by Wally Traugott.

I have on occasion picked up a copy of an album I already have. Sometimes it’s just price. I recently checked out a person’s collection they were selling for a couple bucks a piece. Well they had a copy of a John Denver album I already had but it was in great condition and I just couldn’t walk away without adding it to my bundle. Another one I have multiple copies of is from the band Stryper “To Hell With the Devil”. For those that don’t know, Stryper was the “Christian” metal band that made it to a major record label back in the day. The album that had the most commercial success was “To Hell...”. That album first had a cover of 4 angels sending Satan to Hell. Well for some reason it was considered controversial so they stopped making it and replaced it with a black cover with their logo and “To Hell...” in red. So I bought both copies plus they also did a picture disc that I have as well. Also I have an original Abbey Road, but bought the newly released version because I felt I’d rather play the new version than risk damaging the old.

I consider myself to be a hardcore Hi-Fi fan. I would love to collect the original pressings like for example, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon, 1973. Like the original 1973 UK pressing with the light blue prism, also another 1973 UK pressing that featured the first black prism variation, then the Japanese issues and reissues, especially the one in 1978 by EMI, which featured a completely different sleeve and front and back cover. The front cover is a "live cover" from their Animals tour. And the back cover is information about the album in Japanese. The jacket is a standard single LP jacket, not a gatefold. The insert is an LP sized one and it has the lyrics for the album. The center labels don't have the prism at all. It says EMI on the left side and the color is the EMI center label color through the 70's. And that particular issue is EXTREMELY RARE TO FIND, ESPECIALLY IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION!!! Then we have the 1979 and the two MFSL issues in 1981. The first of the two pressings in 1981 is a reissue of the '79 issue but with different inserts and a different font for the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING. The second pressing is the UHQR version, which has extremely resounding fidelity and is extremely valuable. Also the MFSL issue he has in this video is the 1981 issue, not the 1979 issue. Check the font for ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING on the top. Then we got the high quality CD issues and SACD issues and further high quality LP pressings.

There are a very few albums which I'll buy multiple copies of - DSOTM is one of them. But I have become familiar with the stamp numbers, etc which mark the desirable European pressings, and the generation of copy, amongst other things. The holy grail is still to get the quadraphonic version, along with the correct vintage gear necessary to play it.

I had a Dark side of the moon Japanese EMI Toshiba pressing. I sold it when I went to cds in the 80s, I wish I never did. It was the best sounding pressing in my opinion. That pressing is quite expensive now. Its much better than the Mobile fidelity version.

Guilty here, got six copies of Dark Side Of The Moon, half of them apparently unofficial releases: a Russian pressing, a quadraphonic version and a 3oth anniversary picture disc. The other three originals and repressings. Wanted a good looking one to hang on the wall :)
Got most of my Queen and Jean-Michel Jarre albums double as well, just different versions, to be sure :)
Oh and I've got, erm, seven copies of Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds, because it is just awesome and two are limited dutch editions in a nice box with the book included :)

I have a fetish to collect multiple versions of particular classical music. For example, I have several different copies of Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf' that have different narrators telling the story and explaining the different musical instruments used. The narrators are:
    - Sean Connery
    - Sir Alec Guinness
    - David Bowie
    - Boris Karloff
    - Peter Ustinov
    - Jack Lemmon
    - Sir Ralph Richardson

The biggest reason I've bought multiple copies of an original record I own was to get a cleaner copy. I've even bought some of them on 180 gram vinyl and in every instance but one have been more happy with the re-issue.
The thing that's bitten me in the butt more than once (actually quite a lot), is when I shop at my favorite used record store and buy albums that I've never owned before because they're a lot cheaper in a used format. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten home, played one of them, then when I was filing it away in my collection saw that I already had at lest one, and sometimes multiple copies of the same record already! Oh well.....that's one way of knowing that you really like a record, right?

all the reasons you gave I do and agree with...and some of the same albums that are imports .. have different or more songs on them also....it was a lot of fun back in the day (70's - 80's) to check out the imports and see how the records we know are a little different.. like the kiss albums from Germany... I would at a( exchange) store today and was picking up a new (music from the elder ) album because mine from 1981 was worn out. and a young kid (25 ish) stopped me and said that he was a big kiss fan and that album was very under rated .. I told him that kiss only sold about 1000 of this album and he must be the 1001 now lol....

Many pressings of DGG, Philips, Chandos, etc. are long out of print (and likely won't get quality re-pressings), so if I find a mint copy of a pressing that I like I will get it, even if I have a copy in great condition. The reason being that if my older copy ever gets destroyed or damaged, I will have a back-up.

Me I simply have one copy of each if my LPs and when one degrades through playing, I go and buy another if I like it a lot. Why? I would simply run out of storage space really quickly.

Started collecting this past November . Began with picking up 2 albums by an opening band of a concert I went to. Capstan. That then sealed the deal to start collecting. I then started collecting the all the albums by my favorite band Silverstein and grabbed some bargains from the bins of my local record shop to augment and diversify my collection. I’m now on my quest as a “completionist” with as many of the variants of Silverstein. Do you go to shows? Have you gotten any tour presses?

i can understand having a multiple pressings that sound different whether it be 1 with an original recording and 1 with a remastered mix. that makes sense. They may be the same album but, the mixes are different therefore the listening experience is different. I do not understand buying the same album just for a different color. you do not see the colors when they are on your shelf. you only see them when they are outside the sleeves. 99% of the time the records are in the sleeves. records are meant to be listened to not fondled over because of the color. color variant collectors are depriving people of owning a copy of whatever album to listen to that was pressed in limited amounts and has since became expensive in the resale market. this is why i have no dance gavin dance on vinyl. thankfully the record label saw the demand for that band's albums on vinyl and has now made unlimited pressings on black vinyl and i can finally buy them all slowly over time when money allows not worring about what price they will go for if i do not drain my wallet and buy them now. i buy records for the music and sound on the vinyl discs i do not need multiple color variants with the same audio on the discs. that makes no sense to me and i will never have the shelf space for that even if i wanted to

Discog has almost 1,000 versions of Dark Side of the Moon, I think that's great LOL!!! I do hear that the original Dark Side of the Moon the Harvest pressing (the one you have) is the best but each to his own if your happy with the sound of the other one that all that counts... Now I'm going to have to look into that mobile fidelity pressing if you say it's good.. I do have some multiple copies of some of the Grateful Dead's records do to 1- there are my favorite band, I really like that particular album , different covers & the Green Warner Brother Label, Frank Zappa only cause I like him & I think Dark Side of the Moon I have 3 still looking for the original Harvest Like you have. There are a few other bands I can't think of off hand I have multiple copies of. Another great video thanks for posting..
