  • Wei got together with Akio Naito, President of Seiko Watch Corporation, to have a conversation about Grand Seiko's past and present
The discussion starts with Naito's humble beginnings with the brand and how he managed to introduce a localized Japanese brand to the world starting with the US market in 2016.
The brand created the first-ever Grand Complication, the Grand Seiko Kodo Constant Force Tourbillon in 2022, which took 10 years to develop. He discussed the quality of craftsmanship in the movement must be met with the same amount of vigorous stringiness of the design and finishing on the watches as well.
The conversation concluded with Naito's vision of Grand Seiko becoming a leading global watchmaker and how he plans to expand the brand's presence around the world.

A great interview, no pretension, and a great feeling of honest enthusiasm for the watchmaking and what they’ve accomplished.

Wonderful start to my Friday. Fantastic video, fantastic gents and such an incredible brand, which is really getting more of the recognition it deserves on a global level these days. Makes me happy.

Seiko are great.... Grand Seiko make fantastic watches. In fact I find these two Japanese giants Seiko and Casio G-Shock very good at what they do. This video is very interesting. If the Swiss had introduced Spring Drive it would have been hailed as the New Messiah. Keeping Credor, Grand Seiko, Seiko separate is fine. The Japanese will not follow trend, they will take time to set the trend.

I'm excited to learn that GS is working towards slimming down their movements. Hopefully they will release a spring drive in a case that's

Excellent interview. Expresses clearly why I’ve collected GS intensively for the past decade.

It‘s so interesting to hear from Akio Naito about the thinking behind this great brand, particularly the strategy for moving into the U.S. and European markets as well as the development of the Kodo and 9SA5. The GS watches are my very favorite and I‘m wearing one every day with pleasure.

That was a great interview, Wei! I really love the Grand Seiko brand. It was quite cool to see the CEO knows precisely where each Seiko brand sits. Such great watches-I hope I have one or two before the secret really gets completely out with the mainstream public and the prices shoot up! 😉 Keep the great content coming!

Please Seiko, think about remanufacturing parts that are no longer available. For example, crowns or bezels for the SBDX001. You made so many great watches that need to be kept alive!

I think in Dubai u need to raise the Brand Image on grand seiko and create a independent botique theres a huge market whenit comes to watches, I own a few Grand Seiko bought in Dubai from an AD here but the sales team has a very less knowledge about the brand and the watch itself.

Dear Akio Naito-san, please teach Breitling and other Swiss brands how to make good-looking quartz movements. They forgot the days of the 80s when a quartz was elite and got nicely brushed bridges.

Visually they are getting there but in terms of performance and robustness they have ways to go.

      What makes you say that?

@@phildo864 I own a GS powered by the 9SA5 caliber. At first it ran at +6sec which slowly continued speeding over a course of two weeks and reaching +10sec/day. Normal wear, nothing out of the ordinary. I spent 11.000€ on the watch (online boutique version) and I would expect a slightly better performance. When I asked them to provide me details on shock protection and resistance against magnetism I only got a reply saying „rest assured the watch jas both“. Wonderful service. Now the watch (2 months of wear) is actually in service now.
It’s just a pain…none of my Omegas, Rolexes etc. have had any similar issues.
Stick to Swiss watchmaking would be my advice.
