  • Recently (Aug 2023) we travelled to Taiwan on a rather tight budget: cheap flights right in the middle of hot summer typhoon season and sure enough we got that strong wind heavy rain experience albeit a lot of sun and heat too.
We started our journey in Chiayi as a stopover before going to the mountainous regions where we were then hit with 2days 2nights of heavy downpour and the Taiwan officials decided to close off Alishan for safety reasons AND NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO GO IN!!! You need to be flexible and we immediately booked another accommodation because we couldn’t even get to the hotel we booked inside Alishan and we were met with better weather and views! But I have to say that the heat is really another thing, growing up in Singapore I thought I was well adapted to heat but now im truly scared for global warming…
Transportation wise google maps is really a god sent and you mostly don’t have to prebook train/high speed rail tickets, though if you buy at the counter it’s possible to get a reserved seat (to make sure that you will have a seat for your journey). Bus timings in the city is largely accurate but in the outskirts it’s wildly inaccurate, sometimes earlier by up to 20 mins and they are not frequent either, depending on where, might only have 5 buses throughout the day. If you are visiting these outskirts area I would highly recommend driving.

I think the season makes a difference too! I talked to the BnB host and he commented that the alishan area usually gets a years worth of rain in 1 month and the rest of the months are pretty dry. I went in aug btw
