For me Ian, this is the most valuable 4 minutes of advice for any artist at any level. Like Sargent's brushwork: the brevity of these few simple, but important, messages in this video carries more impact than a 30-40 minute (overworked) video. Thank you.
Thnaks for letting me know. I appreciate it. All the very best.
Awesome, I would also add that the secret to loose fresh strokes is being ok with undone. I was a type A painter until I grasped that concept. Perfection kills paintings. Imperfection is skill.

Best channel on the internet. Thanks, Ian.
Thanks to you, I now only start a painting after I’ve worked out the composition and palette. This has been surprisingly liberating to me. Thanks so much. ❤
That's it Ella. Everyone things that just picking up a brush will be expressive. But that time spent before painting is probably more important. All the best.
Wow, that's precious thoughts! Thank you very much for sharing with us!
you're very welcome! Thank you for watching
Such a simple sounding idea about having the right color first before applying the paint to the canvas. But it is really crucial. I've fallen into the trap of reworking when I had the wrong color and you're right, it's no longer fresh. The zeroing in on Sargent's work was a great image to keep in mind. Thanks for this lesson!
Glad you found that helpful Kris.
So true! I am reviving my oil painting, and I'm all about spontaneity and brushwork that stands alone...

Just signed up for the Mastering composition course! Returning to painting after 20 year detour … I’m hoping to get my drawing skills back on track and push myself past my comfort zone
Well Moesly, that is great news. I'd delighted you are joining us. Welcome back from your detour. See you the call on the 21st. All the best.
Thank you so much for all the information you are giving us for free. It's so useful.
You are most welcome Veju. All the very best.
I think you give excellent advice and I constantly find myself thinking about the things you talk about when I paint; transitional colours especially has been a revelation for me.
Thanks for everything!
You are most welcome. I'm happy you are finding it helpful. And thanks for letting me know. Best wishes.
Perfect explanation thank you.
You are welcome Adele Best wishes
Fabulous summary, Ian.
Thanks Jane. Nice to hear from you. All the best.

I'd be delighted if you joined us Norma. All the best.
Great video ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it Anne.
Hi Ian I would love to join your course but my finances won't stretch enough so I have just purchased your book Mastering Composition and I love the emails thanks
HI Jeff, I understand. The book it actually pretty complete. I might recommend the Design video you can find on my website ianroberts.com. That has a really good overview I think you might find helpful as well. All the best and good luck.
I have been ‘binge’ watching your videos. I have been painting for years, but I struggle to find the focal point of my photos. Also, I don’t know how to simplify my photos. So far, I’m finding your videos helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the great advise. I was able to go right to my bookshelf to find your book! 🤣Looking forward to the class so much!
Thanks Judy and look forward to welcoming you to the course next Saturday. All the best
Your information is spot on Ian..loved the example of Sargent's brushwork.
I would add a 4th element of color to your 3-Hue Value Intensity- and that would be temperature-warm or cool color. I'ved moved to a more subtle approach to painting landscapes, similar to many of Innes paintings.. more neutral colors...instead of screaming intense colors, I'm learning to mix more neutral, natural oil colors...very challenging but I'm tired of seeing all the bright orange bears and screaming florescent mountains that seem to be so popular now...enough of that..!! Also You haven't talked much about abstract art...
In practice you need to talk about temperature as you paint. Is this warmer or cooler. But technically you can find all colors with hue value and intensity. So in my brushwork course for example we spend the last two weeks with just black, white and ochre to address temperature. Because it is as you say essential understanding. And abstract art, it's such a big topic. Where to begin? But in truth I think I do need to branch out, try some new things. So maybe. All the best.
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition thank you.
@@IanRobertsMasteringCompositionHijacking for a sec 😁 I paint abstract and would love to see how you'd approach it.
In pastel Tony Allain is that kind of master. He makes it look so easy. Looking forward to learning.
I remember hearing once the idea of having power in reserve. Meaning, and you could see this with a singer perhaps, that you don't feel the person is straining to their limit. So it looks easy. Although in truth it may not be. All the best Priscilla
Thank you so much, you are always so clear in your explanations. I'm signed up for your mastering composition drawing class and currently practicing sharpening my pencil and making the marks! Looking forward to the course!
Great to know you've signed up. I know you'll love it. I'll see you on the call next Saturday. All the best until then.
This was an excellent class. Not only learning how to draw but to see values, structure, and how to critique your drawings by studying those of your classmates. Ian is an awesome instructor no different than he is in his RUclips videos.
@@BZSchnoodle Thanks so much for the kind words Sheri. I just noticed this comment now.

I really want to join your course, but it's just too pricy at the moment, and my learning style doesn't gel very well with structured courses. I love your short videos explaining principles, I use them to explore and experiment. I hope you keep posting them.
3.1K i 7 hours. what a BOSS. YOU HELP SO MANY BAD ARTISTS GET GOOD. THX!
Thanks Marti. Nice to hear from you. All the best.
Hey! I like cake with cookies and fudge, lol! Great content, thanks for sharing!
You are most welcome Shari. Well do too, you know, for a few days around Christmas but then I gotta stop.
Hi Ian
I love your videos and would love to join your coarse.
I'm in Sydney Australia.
Where are you based in Canada?
HI, I'm from Canada originally but I'm in LA now. I'd be delighted if you joined us for the course. Tell Robin at info@ianroberts.com that you're from Australia. All the best.
Thank you.
You're welcome Nick. Best wishes.
It seems almost intuitive but it helps to hear it verbalized.
Once you hear it's obvious like seeing a simple magician's trick. All the best

Hi Ian will you do an Australian time friendly course in the future? I think this has the Sat video streaming at 3 am here in Brisbane?
HI Sarah, it's been a problem trying to do zoom calls live. We have way more Europeans than Australians and NZ, so 9 am does for the US and Canada, 90% of the students, Europe is late afternoon. But really the call is recorded and you can watch it when you wake up. It really isn't that big a deal. Just the weekly calls are live. You can ask questions in advance and they get answered either in the call or in a direct response. It's nice the feeling of being on the call with everyone, but not really essential.
The way you explain is amazing, are you Professor in university?
Thank you. No, not a professor.
Hi Ian. I said last year that I would take your course next year. Well, here it is! When are the Zoom calls held? I didn't see that info. I work full-time and often over-time but I would love to be able to participate in the calls and not just watch the recording. Also, is there any "down time" between the drawing course and the brushwork and then color courses?
HI Sharon, the calls are Sat morning at 9 am PT. We have a 30 challenge after the drawing course to cement all the skills together, then two weeks off then the brushwork starts. Goes to end of May. Then color starts end of September. Hope that works out for you. I'd be delighted if you could join us this time. All the very best.
This is the best course ever... the zoom calls are recorded and can be accessed anytime. There are additional videos and demonstrations for each lesson that are prerecorded. You can access each course for 2 years. You will also be in a small, interactive group where you will post your work and give and receive critiques. Tha camraderie is very helpful and motivating.
@@cockatielnation5425 I am just seeing this comment now. Thanks so much for this comment. It means a lot to me that you found it so engaging and helpful.
Are these paintings done with acrylic or oils? Thank you

I recently started with watercolours, knowing full well this is a difficult medium to work with. These videos focus heavily on oil painting. Finding instruction for watercolour (especially in Canada) is frustrating, both locally and online. I am confronted with either the wet-on-wet, or the “pure watercolour” approach. Will the classes also help us who want to be watercolour artists?
We had lots of watercolor artists on the last one. The drawing course, the first course, there is no painting at all. It is all about structuring mentally the foundational structure of good composition and using pencil to do that so you have an efficient and enjoyable way of thinking through an image before diving in. Something that is obviously important in watercolor if you don't want to overwork it. When we get to the brushwork course all the exercises translate fine into watercolor and there are TAs that can help. But mainly the first course has no painting so it isn't an issue. All the best.
I'm a watercolorist and found it very helpful to apply these basic principles to that medium. Highly recommend this course!
@@cockatielnation5425 Thank you again. Yes, this and my future courses can definitely be applied to watercolor.
Someone should have taught this to a young George Lucas. 😆 jk
