This was a treat to watch. I saw Van Halen on their 1982 & 1984 tours. When I saw them on the 1984 tour, even a kid like myself could pick up on the negative tension between Roth and Eddie. I then saw Van Halen on the 5150 tour in 1986. I was in the "no one can replace Diamond Dave" camp. Until that 5150 show. The positive energy that Sammy brought to the band was incredible. Glad to see he's still rockin' and also major props to Mr. Rather. Great interview.
I had the honor of meeting Sammy at a small private party after a Van Hagar concert in the 90’s. He was a perfect gentleman, a man’s man. He took the time to get to know me. He doesn’t brush you off like many celebrities do. I met him again years later and after some reflection, he remembered our previous encounter and some details about me; That made me feel like a friend. That’s Sammy, a genuinely good guy.
A fantastic performer! Wish I could have seen him with VH. I rediscovered VH as their 2004 tour was ending. Seen Chickenfoot at the Cabo Wabo and saw The Circle a couple summers ago. Both amazing, unforgettable shows. I saw VH with Roth in 2015, but honestly I enjoyed Sam's shows more.
This was so fun to watch... Nothing more heartwarming to see Sammy down to earth and Dan just going with the flow. I loved the chemistry between the two. Very real and natural.
Because he outright lies. How can you trust someone who blatantly lies about things that are readily dispelled. He may be a "good guy", but he has told so many untruths over the years, and publicly hurt people that he says he "loves", that it's real easy to dismiss him and take little of what he says with any seriousness.
@@e.l.norton can you provide a few examples? All I read was just words and innuendos. Who did he hurt? What lies are you speaking of? Have you ever told a lie?
You have all the world of information at your fingertips. Do your research! In his book he lies about his solo record sales versus Roth, whose solo sales kick Sam's ass. He's lied about the drama between himself and VH in order to position himself as a victim. He hurt Ed and Al and violated their trust by airing what should have been private dirty laundry in his bullshit book. Even he now admits it was wrong of him to have done it. The person who runs their mouth the most is generally the one full of shit. Sam hasn't stopped running his mouth for almost 30 years, while the brothers have said almost nothing. There's a reason Al won't talk to him, even now.

Know this, if the brothers were such good guys, what happened with Roth in 1985 at the pinnacle of their success? Also know this, without Hagar, VH would be dead in 1986, does the name Gary Cherone ring any bells? Notice how Roth has “retired” while Hagar is still going strong? Btw, Hagar older than Roth. Roth never really cared about singing, spent too much time trying to be a “showman” now look, his voice is shot, he looks 20 years older than he is, teeth falling out, sad. As much as you hate Sam, he is what kept VH going strong after the Roth and brother debacle. Also, the only number 1 albums that VH ever produced all came with Hagar as lead singer. Why is it that both Roth and Hagar get dropped from the band??? Hummmm, the brothers are the only common link. Out.

I can’t wait to see The Best of All Worlds tour with Sammy, Michael, Jason and Joe Satriani in Nobelsville, Indiana (just 30 minutes north of Indianapolis) at the RUOFF Music Center amphitheater August 30, 2024. The capacity is 25,000 people. They plan to cover as much of Van Halen as possible. They’re going to be performing the Dave era and Sammy era. They’ll also perform some Led Zeppelin songs in honor of Jason Bonham’s deceased father John Bonham. John is the best drummer of all time in my opinion. Lover Boy is opening up.
I appreciate what Dave brought to VH, but Sammy brought composure and greater vocal range/chops that translated into more radio-friendly, commercial, lucrative music (which is what the VH bros coveted most). And he could play guitar parts…. I’m on team Hagar, for sure.
Didn't grow up as a HUGE fan of VH or SH... but he sure does seem like the coolest guy ever. Fun to see... and has me relistening to his old stuff again!!.
Sammy and Michael Anthony are going out on tour next year, with.... I kid you not.... John Bonham's son on drums, and Joe Satriani on guitar. They'll be playing mostly Van Halen songs.
I totally get nostalgia, etc. So much of what you like musically is determined by what you hear when you are a certain age. What I don’t get is how anybody can objectively make an argument for Roth being better than Hagar. At anything.
Dan Rather is a really nice bloke and gentlemen. Along with Sammy they are all genuine honest and sincere. Not to mention oozing 💯 Class. Love and peace to you always Sammy.
Incredibly talented group with Sammy and those good times it seems like in the pictures they were like kids loving each other and embracing the time and so often its the ego that contributes to personal interests diving rather than doing the best for each other and investing in the greater good of the whole rather than one person. Mr. Rather was wonderful in the interview and the interview was helpful in giving fans some insight.

Lovely interview. Thanks for this. I remember that great first 5150 tour with Sammy in 1986.....Living in the UK here I couldn't attend the gigs myself but I located loads of tape bootleg recordings of them as well as the New Haven Live without a Net sight & sound footage. I had recordings not of the very first gig in Shreveport where the fans knocked the barrier down but the second one in Little Rock Arkansas , & then the one in Memphis,,,,& later stuff like at the Rosemount Chicago. Basically these gigs on the tapes sounded such wild fun ...lol...Sammy making naughty comments about waitresses on 'Good Enough' .....ED going into the 5150 opening riff before it was scheduled to be played (Sammy - 'OK Edward,,ok,,,you're trigger happy with that one aren't you ?) And actually I didn't hear any negative stuff said about Dave by Sammy at all (despite around the time Dave working up conflict in press conferences). The only thing Sammy did which was a bit naughty was getting someone drunk from the audience to come onstage to sing 'Jump' each night ('Give this guy a SIX pack he did good didn't he' ?) Mind you the audience guys singing was at times so FLAT, out of Tune & bad that I remember falling off my chair with laughter listening to the tapes....lol .....Alex was crazy in those days ...He used to call 'time out' on the audience singers by bashing the GONG behind him. Like in that program The GONG SHOW....lol....The live performances were so close to the 5150 record & you'd get to hear ED playing Sammy classics like Rock Candy too.
I don't know what planet youre from but Sam was THE ONE that would not shut up about Dave . And as their manager dying isn't what started the split with big mouth and the band . In a compilation of Van Halen clips Sam said " This is MY band " in one clip , and the next clip you hear Sam say " Leader of the band lead singer of the band , what's the difference ? " Proves what Eddie Van Halen said in a guitar interview . The NEW manager was at Ed's house and actually watched Sam start bossing him around . And asked Ed why Sam was bossing him around . That's what REALLY HAPPENED .
@@BruceStephan well, to be honest I wasn’t there so I don’t really know . Maybe I should shut up myself really. Although Wolf joining in 2006 was understandable because of his fast rising talent. & how much his Father loved him.

Van Halen was a good group. When Sammy joined up, they became a super group. Sammy doesn’t get the credit he deserves for financial saving Van Halen. They were nearly bankrupt when Sammy used his business savvy to get a new contract for the band. They were able to take control of their finances. VanHagar lives on
I saw Sammy with the Wabos, he was so relaxed and just having fun playing music to smaller crowds. Plus, he was selling his Cabo Wabo Tequila at the concert.
What's the old saying , ride with who brought ya, if ED would have just remembered that and told anyone that came calling to "Talk to Sammy " his band would have been together until he died. Ed needed Sammy not the other way around
Great singer, a great likable guy, a lot rock history to his name, took Van Halen to a new route and I appreciate all however Sammy should had never said all the stuff he said about Eddie or Alex, and then expect for Alex be friendly to him.
Cancer took away the good band manager dude...and it took Eddie. Thankfully Sammy is keeping it alive with the Best of ALL Worlds tour with Mikey, Jason Bonham, and Joe Satriani. And there isn't enough love for Dan's Kleenex joke. 🤧
Such a shame that the manager the followed Ed Leffler undermined the integrity of Van Halen in an underhanded effort to get a DLR reunion that was supposed to be so lucrative. However, like any forced art, it turned out like crap.

One video shows Sam say This is MY band . And the next clip he said Lead singer of the band , leader of the band , what's the difference ?
@@Stoovey24Just because he was introverted doesn't give Captain Candyass an excuse to boss Ed around . He started being bossy when he got rich .
@@BruceStephan So what you are saying is that Sammy had a bossy attitude over Ed FIRST and then Ray Daniels suggested Ed stand up to Sammy. Ok…I’m not dogmatic about this…So you mean Sammy was more the cause of it, not Ray Daniels ? …You mentioned that there were problems with Sammy BEFORE Ed Leffner passed away. Sammy always maintained that things were GOOD in VH before then though.
Van Halen was a good group. When Sammy joined up, they became a super group. Sammy doesn’t get the credit he deserves for financial saving Van Halen. They were nearly bankrupt when Sammy used his business savvy to get a new contract for the band. They were able to take control of their finances. VanHagar lives on
I always listen to van halen music I love Sammy Hagar's voice I feel so alive ❤
GREAT JOB ALL...THANX 4 MAKING Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO the music worldwide.
LOVE YOU ALL...!!!....MUCH LOVE.!!
love you sammy!!
I saw Sammy with the Wabos, he was so relaxed and just having fun playing music to smaller crowds. Plus, he was selling his Cabo Wabo Tequila at the concert.
When youre Sammy Hagar, how can you not be a happy camper, no wonder he's always smiling and laughing
Love Sammy's genuine joy for life!
Sammy is just too cool.
I'd rather be Dan Rather in this interview,Love Sammy!
I love Sammy, I have been a rock and roller, for the most part of my life ya I went threw my disco stage but over all Sammy is so down to earth😊😊😊😊😊😊
Sammy is a cool dude and he's all rock and roll. The more I learn about him...the cooler he gets.
I'm not going to watch this, but let me guess...
Sammy is a perfect angel and everybody else is a bad guy?
🤦
Clicked to get Sammy’s read on his time with VH and the vid spends more time as a Ferrari commercial.
I kind of liked them both more separately.
Sammy is just too cool 🍻😎
he is fun
Thank you Sam……for not killing Dan Rather……😂😂😂
He's got a beautiful voice and he made van Halen the best!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
This was awesome.
sammy was an artist in his own right before he ever joined vh,
Sammy was GREAT in MONTROSE,SOLO,VAN HALEN AND CHICKENFOOT!!!!!!!!!!
Sammy brought a professionalism to van Halen that Dave couldn't. A shame how the whole thing went down and now Ed passed...
I want one...lol..great interview 😜👌👍😎🤘
Dan was looking for the "OH, SHIT" bar.
Can't drive 55! Sammy is such a cool dude, i would of liked to party with him back in the day.
Why is Dan Rather pretending to know who Van Halen is?
Uncle Dan is cool I didn't get it before when he said "how many gallons to the mile"
Cancer took away the good band manager dude...and it took Eddie. Thankfully Sammy is keeping it alive with the Best of ALL Worlds tour with Mikey, Jason Bonham, and Joe Satriani.
And there isn't enough love for Dan's Kleenex joke. 🤧
You can tell that as famous as Dan Rather is, he has never owned a supercar. He was like a kid again! 🤣😂👍🏻😎
Sammy has never said a negative word about the band and the Van Halen brothers. Yet Eddie and Alex never missed a chance to trash Sammy.
that is unequivocally patently NOT TRUE. it is the complete opposite actually.
What year was this from , anybody know ?
2015. go back to the start . it shows on the screen briefly
6 minutes of my life ill never get back.
This video was put out way back in 2016.
No one wants geratric Dan Rather asking R&R questions. Roth lives rent free in Hagars head.
What year is this from?
in the beginning it shows 2015
How can anybody compare to SUPERSAM!
Sammy should ask dan what it's like to be caught lying on TV and lose your job as an anchorman.
Uncle Dan ! Love it . 😂🎸✌️
I think he wrote some good songs with Montrose before he hit the Big Time. Thoughts?
I only remember I can't drive 55, but you can hear that signature voice even on that one. Fiiifty Fiiiive.
Such a shame that the manager the followed Ed Leffler undermined the integrity of Van Halen in an underhanded effort to get a DLR reunion that was supposed to be so lucrative. However, like any forced art, it turned out like crap.
Sammy is the best!
Time for a DIAMOND DAVE 😎👍🏻
