  • Sammy Hagar never got along with David Lee Roth and he tried. The only thing they had in common was both being lead singers of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar tells a great story about Kid Rock trying to get Sammy and David Lee Roth together. Clip from the show Opie did with Jim Norton. Jim Florentine was a guest that day and did a great job with the interview.

In an interview with Roth when he and Sammy were touring together, he was asked if they ever party together. Roth replied, "Hey, wherever I am, that's the party." I guess we could have expected an answer like that.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but in what way is Dave "a true artist?" Have you read that guy's lyrics in Van Halen? They are some of the densest, most empty, meaningless lyrics I have ever heard. Vocally he isn't good, either. Just a bunch of squeals and weird interludes in the songs that could've been pulled off by a teenager. "You'll get some leg tonight for sure. Tell us how youuuu dooooooo. One break, comin up!"
Dave is arguably the luckiest dude in music history falling into the lap of a band that was as good as Van Halen. Maybe they wouldn't have been as "fun" without him, but he would've achieved 0 fame on his own or in any other band if Van Halen didn't set him up to cling onto their fame for the rest of his life.
PS- I'm finding out over the years how few people actually care about lyrics, and this genre of music in particular had absolutely nothing important to say. So I guess that's how Dave got away with being such a moron all those years. No one was actually listening to him haha.

Sammy said he basically ran VH on videotape. I think that was the last straw for the brothers. They gave him freedom to run thing AS it took pressure off them and Sammy really enjoyed it. Because he did. The Brother’s left to their own devices accomplished nothing. They did finally get an album out with Gary Sherone, but it was pretty lackluster. There is no doubting EVH’s talent as an Innovator and musician. But a leader he was not. He was a loaner. He would rather tinker and noodle with his guitar all day, and make neat sounds/noises than plan a world tour, or plan a marketing strategy, etc. It also takes a special type of person to be able to take Eddies guitar ramblings and turn them into songs, with structure, etc. DLR and SH could both do that. They were both headstrong and savvy enough to push the band forward. So yea. Dave ran the band when he was in it, Sammy ran the band when he was in it. That isn’t to say there wasn’t input from the other guys, not at all, it’s just Sammy was able to take all the pieces and put them together. The brothers Van Halen couldn’t seem to do that alone

Agree. At least DLR buried the hatchet with the Van Halen brothers long ago even if it was for good business sense. DLR is happy doing his own thing now.
It is Sammy Hagar who passive aggressively continues playing victim and publicly making immature, egocentric comments not only about Roth but occasionally about the deceased Eddie Van Halen about things that should not be discussed publicly. Not cool.
Sammy needs to see a shrink and get over it and move on. He thinks he has but is full of pent up resentment.
As for Roth, yeah, he's eccentric. A lot of creative people are eccentric and sometimes volatile because they have a vision of what they want and unwilling to compromise. That's why Lee went solo. I mean, no one could have told DaVinci how to paint Mona Lisa's smile. He would have told you to f-off in Italian.
As others have said, by the end the Van Halen brothers tapped David Lee Roth to return; not Sammy. Get over it, Sammy.

They had 6 albums before Sammy was even near them. By then EDDIE rewrote the book on guitar and Sammy has the balls to say he "runs VH".
I mean the brothers may have tolerated his ideas letting Sammy carry some weight and then Sammy became delusional thinking he ran things.
I've been a manager for 30yrs and I've seen what happens when you give someone under you a little room and freedom to do their thing. Some flourish but some let the power corrupt them and they bite the hand that feeds them.
Suddenly they think they're the boss running the show. They forget the guy above them created a space for them to work freely. I even defended some of the people to my superiors without that defense they were on the chopping block to be terminated.

VH-Classic was the best...some great standout tunes in the Sammy-era but just not as good in my opinion...Dave's contributions to VH made them better...the two solo albums with Vai were up there with classic VH: Goin' Crazy/Just like Paradise/Yankee Rose -- all killer tracks...DLR brought a positive/good time to whatever he did...a time before everyone got so damn serious and lame. Final point: I can respect the business acumen of Sammy but if I were playing in the one of the biggest bands in the world making millions I would definitely take the Dave approach and travel the world and live out crazy adventure ... later in life working on an ambulance...studying in Japan - total bad-ass.

this is to the most beautiful amazing voice in metal I've ever listened to, not only for his incredible register but for the emotions he's able to transmit. Van Halen songs with him became much more structured. His songs and vocal parts give me a joy for life. they are not based on the trivial 3 rock and roll major chords structure, but on a well developed song progression and lyrics that bring you through a story with its nostalgic parts. Dreams is a materpiece for the energy that gives you and for his incredible voice range register and for how he modulates his vocal chords. I'm sad for David Lee Roth, surely he has a lower register thou still very high but he mistreated his voice and he used the stage in a silly narcisistic way many times, thinking more to exhibit he's weirdness like a prima donna than singing. David has a beautiful voice color, he can produce those high freq falsetto harmonics when he screms and a warm mid low notes. I love some of his own songs like yenkee rose, big trouble, ladies nite in buffalo.... - Vai helped him a lot to compose in my opinion - but he always seems to be more interested in glamour than in music and I think he wasted a lot of his talent singing trivial songs and singing them bad live. I don't wann give quick judgements but I think Sammy is probably a more profound person

The Van Halen with DLR was completely different than the VH with Sammi. How many rock bands could lose their singer, bring in another singer and knock out 4 more platinum albums?
