  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport marks a milestone, celebrating 75 years of service. During that time, its seen massive growth, major technological changes, and a huge increase in people flying in and out. In the summer of 1949, Sea-Tac was hailed as Americas most advanced airport with its airy, glass-walled concourses and soaring control tower. Hear from a woman who witnessed the hoopla on opening day! Back then, travelers enjoyed fine dining in the terminal. And in baggage claim your luggage was handed to you! Imagine that! Tatevik Aprikyan looks back on the airports incredible history.

My father was a United Airlines pilot back in the 1940's - 1960's and one day before SeaTac opened in 1949 he found himself in the situation where Boeing Field was socked in and his fuel levels were too low to divert to Portland. So instead he received permission to land at SeaTac even though it was not officially open for commercial traffic making him the first to land a commercial flight there. He said that United had to send a bus from Boeing field to pick up the passengers and that he had to wait for the weather to improve before he could make the short hop to BFI. United would make the move from Boeing Field to SeaTac the following year in 1950 I believe.
