Z Reviews how do they compare to the diy 3.1a HiVi / swam speakers you made? I am debating those, these and the BMR for best sound/bang but mostly these and the DIY for a mixed music/theater setup.
Hey I just got into the audio world, I upgraded from motherboard audio with my razor kraken to a creative sound blaster zxr with hd 6xx. I love the sound signature, but I can't help but notice how the sound is presented differently, mostly smaller, like it's in my head. Could you get me the name of a headphone that can deliver balanced clarity, while presenting a wide soundstage that can make me feel like I'm just surrounded from all directions, more deep into the music? I realize that even while loving the Sennheiser's, something's missing. Thanks for helping me out if you do, love ur vids.
Just so you know, a 5/8" soft dome inside a 6 7/8" circular waveguide is the same ratio as the ideal anime breast. Which explains a lot re: your reaction...
Hi Zeos. Amphion, also from Scandanavia (Finland) have been doing the same dispersal matched tweeter and mid bass for a couple of decades. They also have the tweeter waveguide and passive radiators with some models e.g. the Argon 3s stand-mounter (as well as their larger floor-standers) They have been doing this since the end of the 1990s. Buchardt will be well aware of the fantastic performance of Amphion. I listened to the 3LS and 7LS floor-standers recently and was blown away. Keep up the great content.
Those midwoofers are as good as it gets. Sb17nbac or a variation thereof. Waveguides for tweeters make a lot of sense for a variety of reasons. 1. Alignment of the acoustic centres 2. Mechanical amplification of the lower portion of the tweeter passband. 3. Controlled directivity. 4. Simplifies crossover design that requires less components.
Was aiming for SVS Ultra 3 years ago, then the S300 2 years ago and finally ended up with these instead 6 months ago. My end game speakers with pre-order discount :) smoked oak finish too. Thks Z.
The SVS ultra are along the lines of dynaudio in terms of leaning on polite. The tweeter will not have the treble quality or resolution of Kef ls50 or the S400's which use Sb acoustics tweeters. The Sb are made by former scan-speak engineers. The tweeters they make are a close match to the revelator for a fraction of the cost. The soft aluminum SVS tweeter is quite good, but not at the same level. Worth the money, sure.
Controlled directivity is what you’re referring to. Polar response is what you’d look at to really get an idea for what something will sound like, measurements at all angles. Controlled directivity designs get better as they go bigger. My main speakers use a 12” woofer mated to a similar sized waveguide using a compression driver for the highs.
Cujobob , same with my vintage Sansui speakers, mine have an L-Pad on the compression horn loaded tweeters. I've never seen another speaker like them except for the older JBLs
i heard those on an audio show last year, you wont believe how much bass they can push (given the size) them till you hear them in person, absolute beasts! plus the magic of the tweeters do this kind of "room full of soud" effect , very impressive pair
They sucks BIG compared to the best speaker of the decade, the amazing MAGNAT TRANSPULS 1500, 15 inch woofer 96efficency a real speaker look at less than 1000 dollars/euros!
@@ca77721 I'm comparing it because the Magnat Transpuls ia one of the best deal in the history of audio. For the price it costs usually they gives you a shoe box or a tiny ugly tower, not a REAL speaker with a 15 inch woofer and 95db efficency that can be driven pratically by ANY amplifier.
@@xenigron6237 The problem with perception is a false sense of reality. Comparing a floor standing speaker to a bookshelf is ludicrious~ 2 different ideas and 2 totally different needs. I'm assuming that because a speaker has a 15-inch woofer and it's 95db efficient it "supposed" to sound better? How can you explain that analogy with actual facts, footage and sound demo? My vintage JBL L50's sound good, in fact, sound fantastic. But I can't compare a floor standing speaker with a bookshelf, 2 totally different classes of speakers... DUH!
I'm a proud owner of the S400's, and picking them up at the pre-order price of about $1600 or so, I had the same feeling as Zeos, "these speakers ONLY cost...?!" @@christopherheinz6809 I've actually not heard the S300 yet. I had to base it off of the reviewer's opinions here on YT. I will say that the bass of the S400 is satisfying to my tastes.
So, Z says their great but have to be cranked up to reach that greatness... That is NOT a good sign to me. His take on the waveguide and still needing to turn them over makes no sense to me. Does the waveguide not work?
Kef has the exact same wave guide because the tweeter radiates from the same mid range driver. All higher end Kef speakers use a 5" midrange, because it's the best dispersion angle for the tweeter. I haven't heard the R300s, but I have the R900s, LS50s and Q100s. I have set the LS50s and Q100s on tower speakers and they sounded like ass. They need sand filled stands that are rock solid, to avoid resonating the floor, or weakening/distorting the bass because the speaker is rocking (moving), even if ever so slightly.

I regret not buying these. I live in India and the import duty would have been around 700 dollars, but buchardt are offering free shipping+import duty all around the world i.e these are available all around the world at the same price. That is really awesome and finally a high end speaker manufacturer that takes customers out side US and Canada seriously. Huge shout out to buchardt for doing this.
The wave guide is acting as a semi horn, increasing the sensitivity of the tweeter. Thus a smaller one can be used. A smaller tweeter diaphragm also disperses over a wider angle too.

Listened to the sound demo. The sound demo sounded great coming through my older Mackie HR824 powered studio monitors. In fact they look like these S400's turned the other way around. Even have the passive rear radiator. 8" woofer and larger tweeter. PLUS they are powered. Wish i could hear these in person. I can't really imagine things sounding that much better than the Mackie's. I am listening nearfield however so maybe that is where the S400's would outperform the Mackies....? Thanks for all your reviews bud. Love my Massdrop 58x's and Fidelio X2's. Got those because of your reviews. I go back and forth between those two headphones. Different flavors but both really nice.
How do these compare to SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers? Significant price difference. Are they really much better? Awesome reviews, btw, really glad U do sound demos too.
For 2K, would you buy the Ohm 1000s, or these? I already own KEF R300s in a different room, and am looking for a setup in my basement which has quite a large listening area.Love the KEFs but it sounds like the R3s wouldn't be worth the money compared to the Ohms or Buchardts.
Seems that these speakers can easily compete with PMC and Proac at a fraction of the price? I have a Naim Nait 5si at 60 watts. Do you think would be a good combo? Thanks for your video reviews, the most entertaining and enlightening!
Thanks for the information concerning near-field performance; no one else I’ve listened to has mentioned that. I’m sitting at most. 5 feet away from my speakers now, trying to keep 2 feet away from all walls with my LS50’s.
LS50w will allow you to bring them off the desk and it will fill your room - each has its own amp @230W with DSP and much better low end! please give them to try!
5:55 Amphion speakers have a very similar design. I have Amphion Helium 3's and among all the marketing lingo the product page it says: "The signature Amphion waveguide integrates the drivers and provides a wide and evenly balanced listening field." So the wave guide is similar size to the woofer and I believe the tweeter is also depth wise on the same axis as the center of the woofer. Aurelia has also similar kinds of designs (ie. Aurelia Magenta), both are Finnish brands.
I can’t help but wonder how they would compare to the tekton impact monitor. Basically the same price, and regarded as a top level performer like these. Have you heard any tekton speakers? Any comparison?
I thought your Ohm's were the pinnacle of perfection in your mind? Steve Guttenberg said if you want to believe there is a symphony orchestra in your house then the Focal Utopia EM's are what you want but then they cost 150K or more and are big with a massive electro magnet driver.
Hell you got me all bummed because you are right, I can't afford them. So I'm going to do what I always do when I get a little down. Take a nice sweet ride in the Corvette!
Buchardt S400 performs quite well at its price range of $1600. However it is far below Harbeth 30.1 in details, musicality and sound stage. For human voice it is also below that of KEF L50 which due to its sizes cannot compete with Harbeth 30.1 in detail and sound stage. However we must note that Harbeth 30.1 is more than twice as expensive as Buchardt S400. I use Parasound JC 1 & 2 power and preamp , Benchmark 2 Dac and Audio GD D27 Dac preamp to test and compare these 3 speakers
Zeos just to say that Amphion have been doing the woofer-dispersion-match with a tweeter waveguide for some years. Mad's is certainly not the first. Their Argon range are great. They are also Scandinavian.
What are the tracks at 7:30 and 8:38? Would really like to know! EDIT: Found the song at 8:38. Was Basement Jaxx - Get Me Off. Still don't know 7:30 though.
Hey man, I greatly enjoy your reviews, please send my regards to Chewbacca. Quick question, how would you compare these to Klipsch Forte 3? I know there's a price/size difference, but since you said the Buchards sound waaaay bigger then they are, it would be great if you could compare them! Much appreciated!
Hey Zeos, I love your videos and laid back style of presenting. I just wanted to point out that the golden rule with speakers that have a deep waveguide or have horns (like the Klipsch's) is that they are not meant for near field use as they make high frequencies sound very harsh the closer you get due to that horn shout effect. That is why most nearfield monitors don't have a waveguide with the exception to the Genelecs who's waveguide is pretty shallow and wide.
I know that this is an old comment, but it is absolutely false. This belief is a holdover from very old horn speakers and very bad modern horns. Plenty of great nearfield speakers use horns and deep waveguides to great effect (JBL, for example)
Hi there! Firstly, thanks for the awesome review! You’re one of maybe 3 or 4 youtubers I trust for feedback re. hi-fi. And I’m hyper skeptical. Would appreciate some input on these speakers from anyone reading this. I’m looking for a pair of full-range speakers (as close to 30 Hz as possible) to be used for music listening and watching films in my BR (~10-ft x 15 ft. x 9 ft tall). I value high end clarity and the ability to discern transients well. Which is why I tend to prefer Ribbon tweeters- specifically Adam’s AMT tweeters. What I’m looking to improve though is the bass- I need strong, punchy bass that extends lower than what my Adam A7X or T7V can provide. If you’re familiar with Adam monitors, I use A7Xs for my PC and actually use Adam T7Vs for my TV. Before you ask, they work great as bookshelf units- they aren’t limited to nearfield. I love the high end clarity of the T7Vs but I feel the low-end could be more punchy (they’re not as tight as the A7X) and could extend lower. I love the Adams as they provide as much (T7Vs) or more (A7Xs) high end clarity as the KEF LS50s but aren’t as harsh to my ears. Would these provide good high end clarity (willing to sacrifice a bit vs. ribbon tweeters) while addressing my itch for low-end extension? As it stands, I’ll be installing bass traps in two corners that have serious bass buildup. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Would you say the phantom center sweetspot when using the S400s for theater is wider than normal? It seems like that tweeter design should have some kind of benefits in that department. I'm very interested in getting a pair for music use but worried about their applicability for HT as someone who usually uses a center channel but is open to trying 4.1 if it can provide a decent experience for at least a couple people at like an 8-9ft distance. Otherwise some crazy shit would have to happen like ordering a third and finding a way to make that not look insane, or maybe just giving up and throwing an LS50 in the middle.
For future reference, his name said phonetically sounds like "Mass" (the d is silent) "Bo Kart" (same sound as when you would say Go Cart). I was just speaking with him regarding the S400'S and stands I ordered and brought up the subject because I knew so many were/are saying his name incorrectly. 😁
On first glance they remind me of Mackie HR824's and Def Tech models blended into one. Using the wide range / angled dispersion tweeter and the pressure inducing radiator. One point to teach people who can't afford them today is to save... and in ten years they will be a lot lot less. I did so with my most expensive speakers. Most people with nice stuff don't have time with their nice stuff. You can have everthing in this world on a budget if you are willing to wait. Patience. Then you don't need to work so hard, slave your time and be a puppet as much.
i notice you said on the s300 review that they were no good for movies but good for music, is this the same case with the 400 or would u say good for both ?
When I was in the Army I still didn't have a lot of money but I didn't have rent either so I could spend an entire paycheck on speakers If I wanted to!
Based on the whole light weight mass speaker dancing its way across the speaker stands, Im thinking sandbads/weight on top of speakers, plus some tweaks for improving solidity of imaging
Z, Are S300 better than S400 in terms of background music playback? I don't listen to music loud, I love to listen to music at nights, when it is very quiet but the bass is still powerful. thanks
Ryan G , OMG the dynaudio speakers are so good but damn they are out of the world expensive just like Focal. too much for me for sure. I would have to break into my gold emergency stash to buy a pair, caint do that. so my next best thing is the Klipsch RP 600Ms. affordable good smooth speakers.
Word of warning: for those who are preordering now (for delivery in June) to take advantage of the discount, your credit card will be charged the day you order, not the day they ship. Current 1510 euro/ my charge=$1696.17, includes US VAT rate. Will change due to currency fluctuations.
Do you have any opinions on pairing these with a center channel for home theater? Unfortunately I can’t have multiple sets for theater and music. Thanks!
"Volume minimum? Not a problem". I've heard so many great things about these speakers. Great review and thanks for helping me decide where my next $2K will be going. I know how kitty feels. Nothing says love like a couch full of cat puke. "Yummmmm....." Cheers!
I love the S400 too. Only thing I'd disagree: I think the black satin finish i just perfect. Smooth and discrete with a touch of elegance. Other than that, just enjoy, tap your fingers and wiggle your body :)
Z love your videos . Great information mixed with humor. The Buchardt's are not made in Denmark. They are made in China. There are pictures on the website about the Chinese factory. Anyway, have a great day.
Hi Zeos, ordered these in white :)! Which headphones would you recommend for owners of these speakers, who want a similar experience? I am looking for a similar sound signature and sound stage to match with these speaker, preferably bluetooth...
The s400, r3 and r300 are all highly recommended. The r3 being an improvement over the r300 but you can probably get a better deal on the r300 as the r3 are new.
@@artfartzy It's great to. You can't go wrong. If your budget allows for it get the s400 if not get the s300. Literally not much will beat Buchardts or kef speakers.

Im actually okay happy with my current speakers (DLS R55) was just thinking if I was to upgrade or have something better. These Buchard speakers are they easy to drive or do they need a lot of watts?
@@artfartzy They have a 88db efficiency meaning they're pretty normal. 100 watts will power it fine to loud volume levels. The best thing is to enjoy the magic of your own speakers. If you can enjoy music on them then that's the only thing that matters.

5:55 Amphion speakers have a very similar design. I have Amphion Helium 3's and among all the marketing lingo the product page it says: "The signature Amphion waveguide integrates the drivers and provides a wide and evenly balanced listening field."
So the wave guide is similar size to the woofer and I believe the tweeter is also depth wise on the same axis as the center of the woofer. Aurelia has also similar kinds of designs (ie. Aurelia Magenta), both are Finnish brands.
I wonder if anyone every walks by, sees zeos in the window ranting with the gopro on his head, and just stands there and watches till he finishes.
Thanks for the review! BUCHARDT S400 or Edifier S3000 PRO?
I can’t help but wonder how they would compare to the tekton impact monitor. Basically the same price, and regarded as a top level performer like these. Have you heard any tekton speakers? Any comparison?
I thought your Ohm's were the pinnacle of perfection in your mind? Steve Guttenberg said if you want to believe there is a symphony orchestra in your house then the Focal Utopia EM's are what you want but then they cost 150K or more and are big with a massive electro magnet driver.
Yes, thanks for the review. For sure. Been waiting for this foreever
Hell you got me all bummed because you are right, I can't afford them. So I'm going to do what I always do when I get a little down. Take a nice sweet ride in the Corvette!
Wow. There are so many Buchardt commercials on yt lately. Sales must be good now.
Hc Kui Yea, that might be why they are twice the fucking price...
Zeos just to say that Amphion have been doing the woofer-dispersion-match with a tweeter waveguide for some years. Mad's is certainly not the first. Their Argon range are great. They are also Scandinavian.
Genelec aren’t the only good Finnish speaker manufacturer!
Do you prefer these more than the Klipsch RP-600M speakers ?
You never realy know how a speaker sound until you play "Slayer" on them.
Good review! How far do these need to be from the wall to sound good/their best?
Would you say the phantom center sweetspot when using the S400s for theater is wider than normal? It seems like that tweeter design should have some kind of benefits in that department. I'm very interested in getting a pair for music use but worried about their applicability for HT as someone who usually uses a center channel but is open to trying 4.1 if it can provide a decent experience for at least a couple people at like an 8-9ft distance. Otherwise some crazy shit would have to happen like ordering a third and finding a way to make that not look insane, or maybe just giving up and throwing an LS50 in the middle.
Z you are dumb, Megumin is Best Girl because Flat Justice!
@Gossip Mime Z the Weeb xD
sike she’s 14
Never mind the speakers Sendrawz's Wiz for the win!
your videos are a treat!
My Mackie HR824's in 2006 were $1600.00. These speakers look to have more thump on the low end I like.
Love the speakers, and love your reviews too! Yup, I want these, someday, someday!
Just from the review you can tell/hear they are really, really good speakers.
Wow. Good review . Iam planning to pair these with the schiit raganok 2 , will that be a good match ?
i notice you said on the s300 review that they were no good for movies but good for music, is this the same case with the 400 or would u say good for both ?
How do they compare the svs ultra bookshelves? Are they still the best of all?
Amphion have the same tech. Passive radiator, tweeter with waveguide and matched dispersion of woofer and tweeter.
When I was in the Army I still didn't have a lot of money but I didn't have rent either so I could spend an entire paycheck on speakers If I wanted to!
swans m300,kef ls50,klipsch rp600 or this buchardt s400 irregardless of the price difference..just overall sound quality?
Z you're stepping your game WAY up w/ pre-comments to satiate all the plebies FAQ's :)
Based on the whole light weight mass speaker dancing its way across the speaker stands, Im thinking sandbads/weight on top of speakers, plus some tweaks for improving solidity of imaging
How does the KEF r3 compare with the buchardt s400? Debating on getting one of the two.
Hide and SEEEEEKKKK!!!
You went with the Heep! :thumbsupz!!
How much space behind does the radiator need? I have audio neighbours below...
It will vary based on many factors. No less then a foot I would say.
Great video. What about these compared to B&W 705 S2?
Z,
Are S300 better than S400 in terms of background music playback?
I don't listen to music loud, I love to listen to music at nights, when it is very quiet but the bass is still powerful.
thanks
Hey Man, what DAC and preamp are you using ?
The Buchardt Audio website says that the mid/woofer is 6 inches in diameter.
I would like a review on the Dynaudio Xeo4! Or maby just a short opinion here? Thanks for all good work man!!
Kim Rådén , way to expensive in my opinion
They need to add a center channel to the lineup. I would buy these in a heartbeat to have my front stage match.
Just send an email to buchardt and they will let you buy single speakers. :)
They're a $1000 more, but I wonder how Dynaudio Special 40's compare to the S400
Ryan G , OMG the dynaudio speakers are so good but damn they are out of the world expensive
just like Focal. too much for me for sure.
Thanks!
You might want to try shorter stands to ear match the treble. Good review.
Your hearing the benefits of horn loading a tweeter.
Hey dude I’m curious how big is your living room and do you think using spade speaker connecters will be a problem with these speakers ?
6:00 DALI speakers (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries) do that.
How would S400 compare to a Martin Logan Motion 40 tower speaker?
Motions 40 are discontinued and great value / practically same footprint with stand.
The black ones are the S400 and the ones you recommend? Or was it the S300 you recommended? Little confused :)
The s400, r3 and r300 are all highly recommended. The r3 being an improvement over the r300 but you can probably get a better deal on the r300 as the r3 are new.
@@V1ralB1ack what about the S300 ?
@@artfartzy It's great to. You can't go wrong. If your budget allows for it get the s400 if not get the s300. Literally not much will beat Buchardts or kef speakers.
@@V1ralB1ack Sorry I mean maybe I shouldnt get them after what I heard in that video. He also mention the magnetic front cover falling off sometimes because of the base.
Will you ever review the Philharmonic BMR. Since you are doing $2000 large bookshelf speakers.
Anyone remember the KEF 104ab from the late 70’s to early 80’s? Very similar driver arrangement except the large, oval passive radiator was on the front arranged lengthwise beneath the woofer and tweeter. Wonderful speakers. Wish I still had mine.
Looks like an Amphion One15. (apart from being upside down and skewed) Those are finnish and very popular in studios.
For me, the problem is that they look if they been made in 1990
Going for kef r3, that grill just justifies for me
Would you get these and an amp or go for the 500? Which are active?
I love putting on a video of yours and then proceed to continue what I was doing, background noise :3
I accept this role and hope you are doing something productive with it.
A bit late to the party but I would love for you to compare these with the arendal speakers that are on the market
Thks for the review...hope you can compare them to the Tekton Impact Monitor soon
i mean i got my s300´s for around 450$ used, then found an old Siemens amp at the landfill...im completely satisfied with my setup
