I salute with folded hands, the greatest among seers, Patañjali, who removed the impurities of the mind, speech and body by composing texts on yoga, grammar and medicine respectively
To the one who is human in form til shoulders, who holds in his hands a conch, discus and sword, who is thousand headed and white in hue, I offer my salutations
atha yogānuśāsanam 1.1
yogaḥ cittavṛttinirodhaḥ 1.2
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe avasthānam 1.3
yama niyama āsana prāṇāyāma pratyāhāra dhāraṇā dhyāna samādhayaḥ
aṣṭau aṅgāni 2.29
ahiṃsā satya asteya brahmacarya aparigrahāḥ yamāḥ 2.30
jāti deśa kāla samaya anavacchinnāḥ
sārvabhaumāḥ mahāvratam 2.31
śauca santoṣa tapaḥ svādhyāya
īśvarapraṇidhānāni niyamāḥ 2.32
Now the exposition of Yoga is being made
The restraint of the modifications of the mind stuff is Yoga
Then the seer abides in its own nature
(By practice of the lmbs of Yoga the impurities dwindle away and there dawns the light of wisdom leading to discriminative discernment 2.28)
regulation, observances, meditative posture, breath control. Withdrawal of senses, concentration, meditation, contemplation, these are the 8 limbs 2.29
Yama consists of non violence, truthfulness, non stealing, continence and non greed 2.30
These great vows are universal not limited by class, place time or circumstance 2.31
Niyama consists of Purity, contentment, austerities, study of Self, surrender to the divine 2.32

संदर्शितस्वात्मसुखावबोधे

संसारहालाहलमोहशान्त्यै
योगन चित्तस्य पदेन वाचां

@leafonabreeze *I think if you have lack of time, no need to learn sanskrit specially. Only learn few words meaning daily from Stotra, Namavali, Chalisa & Ashtakam through internet/youtube. Automatically you will get sufficient knowledge about sanskrit language. You can search on internet with key word "Translation of ....." what you want to learn. This is a easy method. Example -* 👇

Tears of Joy run down my face when I hear bhajans and also sadness at times of homesick feeling for Maha Bharat and my Indian Hindu soul family although I am born this life white American born female. Always pleased to see your offerings! It reminded me of Dr Rammurti Mishra. Back around 1983? He visited London and a got one of his cassettes on yoga Sutra chanting. I used to sing the chant pretty regularly as a result. He would often start his talks with the invocation of Patanjali. Another cassette I had was on AtmaBodha chanting. So I used to sing that one quite regularly too. Dr Mishra was a Brain surgeon at the Belle Vue hospital in New York? But he actually never mentioned that fact. Prabhupad of Hare Krishna fame had stayed at his ashram when he first went to the states in the 1960s. The main matter of contention between them was I guess that Dr Mishra was an advaitin whereas Prabhupad was not And Dr Mishra was very keen on propagation of Sanskrit. He generally included chanting Sanskrit rules instead of just bhajans at his talks. Anyway you can see a short video of Dr Mishra on YT in conversation on a TV programme from the 1960s. He was later called Shri Brahmananda. He wrote the classic book on yoga, Fundamentals of Yoga. You can read up a bit about him here

We have to realize what we miss in our life by not learning Sanskrit! There is a huge treasure lying underground but we don't know how to reach out. We just sit idle over it. So sad!!

Dr RamaMurti Mishra had done exactly this, I got hold of his recording around 1984 and used to chant it everyday, but he had done the entire sutra from the beginning.
