To bring out a little more detail make a wash of black acrylic paint and water. Water it way down then paint it on and use paper towels to rub off the high spot. It will give a more detailed look adding shadows and antiquing to it.

Thank you so much for the video. I'm an artist and I also make signs, though here in my area it's more LED channel letters that's in demand and I wanted to find something I can be more creative in. Your sign looks great!
Also, I do have a recommendation for your paints, seeing as how I use paints for my canvases.. I recommend liquitex soft body paints. After many years using craft paints, I discovered soft body. They have a similar consistency but BIG color output. This helps to avoid 2 coats of paint.
Can't wait to make something cool. Thanks again!

    Good Job.
You could glue on such wood or European Tuscan panels onto the back of the Brick set to make duel sets...

    Oh Mazin⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Never had I thought of melting styrofoam to make a sign.
When you paint your letters , do you pull the clear masking off ? Or do you paint letters over the vinal ?
When i was a kid i needed to spray paint something. We had this huge styrofoam cooler , that had gotten all used n dirty. I laid the project on top of the lid , n sprayed it. Thought it looked Kool the way it melted , and left the coverd area in tact , but never thought of actually using it for something productive. Might could just use spray paint for your base colors for the base coat instead of acetone???
I gotta try this !!! Also enjoyed your other styro sign.

Yes ,!I remove the vinyl before painting. This is a fun trick and works great. Thanks so much for watching.

Looks great. I'm curious deep does the laquer stop eating into the foam? Do you have to wash of the laquer or.does it just stop dissolving?

    • @DIYGene
      @DIYGene  5 лет назад +2

When I spray the lacquer thinner on the foam using a spray bottle, I try to keep it in a mist. It will eat down about 1/4” . You don’t have to rinse it off because the evaporates very fast. It also causes the foam to harden like a shell when it dries. Then use water based paint to finish it. I hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching.

@@DIYGene thanks for the quick reply.. So I have a vinyl cutter I was think in I could use it to cut the stencils but would i still have to cut into the foam. I'm guessing you do to create a border wall between the lawyer and non lawyer areas. Is that right?

Lowes has two different boards. I didn’t realize and my board is not dissolving. Are all boards not made the same?

    • @DIYGene

Your question made me very curious. I ran over to Lowe’s and picked up a owens corning project panel called Foamular NGX. I used some lacquer thinner on it and it did not affect it. This is a lavender colored panel. The panel I used in this video is a green colored and must not be as dense because the lacquer works great on it. At the time of this video, the green panel was all they sold. I would look for the green panel and test it before starting a project. I hope you didn’t have a lot of work already in this one.

@@DIYGene so would the type of foam needed to be used is polystyrene? I saw this is the one that was tagged in your video but it is no longer available.

At the Lowes by me they still carry the green foam. I should have bought one to try it out.@@user-qu3yz5sp2e

Or you could design it on a computer take it to a local sign shop that has a CNC machine with your styrofoam and ask them how much they would charge to cut it out and I'm guessing most places would give you a hell of a deal and you might even find some that say they won't charge as long as you designed it in the computer to where they don't have to do any work editing the file because that styrofoam woodcut at the machines maximum speed so it might take a couple of minutes

Gene... I'm here again to look your great video over...
Getting ready to move back to Albuquerque, New Mexico to
RE-Open my Acting Studio, to teach acting for Film, TV & Stage...
... and Mystery Dinner Theatre... We will need a lot of (Light weight) props...
Thank you again for sharing this great video...
    Question:
In the video... I just realized watching this time... your hands shake.
Do you have Parkinson's"s Disease? The reason I'm asking is in the last 2 years, my 86 year old mother has it and it's getting really bad... and she is VERY HOT (from the inside out)...
We have not been able to find any medicine that works...
Do you (if you have Parkinson's Disease..) know what is good to take for it?

      What a small world...
      That is so COOL...
You and your family live in ABQ... or You have family that lives in ABQ?
When ... (it may be awhile... I want to also have a "Mystery Dinner Theatre" with my Acting Studio... where my students will all be professional actors....
I have had a few POP-UP Eateries and one restaurant Food... Acting... go well together and thought it would be great to have Mystery Dinner Theatre...
We have had some, with our plays... Did really well...
I baked over $600. worth of food (just deserts) and sold out in 3 days... People were coming back, buying a ticket just to have the free food!!!
      So Happy.
When I get my Mystery Dinner Theatre... You and your wife have to be my GUEST...
The name of my Acting Studio is
      J. Christopher Couture
      Acting Studio
I don't have the venue just yet... but I know God has a plan... I just need to move up there and find it... I
had it (last time) in Corralas ... very small studio...
      Love that place...
Tell your family... I am looking for a place to lease to have my Acting Studio for Kids, Teens, and Adults... I like the North Valley area... or Corrales area...
I'm in Carlsbad NM right now... and I'm tired of the 108* ... that is the real reason I haven't moved up to ABQ just yet... can't handle the HEAT... it will be better in a few weeks.
Again... Thank you for your great videos... Love them.
