What the heck is HDU?

  • Here's how I used my Stepcraft M.1000 CNC to cut an HDU foam sign. Cutting sign foam is such a fun process. Make sure to watch all of the way through, as I show my painting technique, and follow up with some bloopers.
    The tools used were all purchased from www.ToolsToday.com.
    www.toolstoday.com/stepcraft-...
    Bits: Amana Item no. 46202-K and Amana Item no. 45704
    www.toolstoday.com/v-14443-am...
    You can also view the Stepcraft M.1000 on the Stepcraft website at www.Stepcraft.us
    Painting daubers (similar but not the ones I used in this video): amzn.to/3Fsnc3k
    You can search for an HDU supplier in your area or do a Google search for HDU suppliers. The cost of the HDU is more than melamine, MDF, or hardwood, but the quality you'll get from the HDU far exceeds that of natural wood. An HDU sign will last longer than it's wood competition and machines very well.
    Feel free to leave a comment below with any questions you have. Also, follow me on IG @voeltnerwoodworking for daily posts. Thank you for your support!

    Thanks for introducing me to HDU I’ll definitely check it out. Do they sell them in smaller sizes other then full sheets?

      Thanks! I don’t think so. There are sample pieces you can get but they’re usually 12” square. I’ve not found a supplier that does 24” pieces, just full sheets. Let me know if you do find one.

      @VoeltnerWoodworking  2 года назад

      It’s a painting sponge. You can get them at most craft stores. I put a link in the description for similar ones on Amazon. Thanks so much!

    What finishing material did you use with the painting sponge? Nice video!

      Thank you. I generally use a mix of either acrylic paints (indoor signs) or exterior paints for commercial signs. On this one it was acrylic and I use a paint dobber that I picked up from an art supply store. Thanks so much for watching! I'm planning on doing a more in depth video on HDU and sign making in the future. I'll be sure to include this information. Cheers!

      @@VoeltnerWoodworking Was it a varnish or a polyurethane that you used with the sponge?

    • @VoeltnerWoodworking
      @VoeltnerWoodworking  Год назад

      It was a craft acrylic paint like this:
      amzn.to/3Jp2Hsg
      It works great for indoor type projects.

    Have you tried pvc sheets as compared to the HDU foam? PVC machines great and is cheaper, but I have never used hdu foam.

    • @VoeltnerWoodworking
      @VoeltnerWoodworking  3 года назад +1

      I haven’t used PVC sheets yet. I enjoy the way the HDU machines and how durable it is for the elements. Will have to give PVC a try. Thanks!

      It’s a sponge dauber you can get at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. They work great!

      @@VoeltnerWoodworking For what? What are you doing with it? Some sort of a sealer? And if so, what kind in particular? 🙏

    • @VoeltnerWoodworking

      Some of the white paint bled over so I am just touching up the black around the recessed text. It's the same paint that is on the sign.

    Where might one acquire a sheet of HDU?

    • @VoeltnerWoodworking
      @VoeltnerWoodworking  3 года назад +1

      There are a few suppliers online. You'll probably have to call them to get pricing for most of them. Precision Board, Grimco, Signfoam.com are a few.
