I love synths that have a surface on top for other synths/drinks/etc.
ryan snyder drinks have no business being near a synth!!!
drum machines, nachos, ashtrays, women, cats etc
You are living in the edge my friend
@@rp1891 cats for sure. Can't stop their inexorable advance
That stink bug is jamming with you :)
And my god this synth sounds wonderful
Just picked one of these up for a steal by todays standards. These videos definitely influenced my decision. What a unique, powerful synth. I love that i can put my Reface CP or Bass Station on top as well!
It is SUCH a worthy instrument!
Great intro to this synth. I borrowed one of these from a friend in the early 90's and adored the beautiful sounds it made. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
straycookingfat Hey, thanks!
Wow just discovered this video . Very very intresting and great sounding analogue beast.
thanks for lots of information on
and great demo playing of this unique synth!
VolcaRock Thank you, and there's more to come...
Marc! We missed you! This was my favourite intro music so far
ConditionalMan Hey, thanks! It's a bit derivative of some popular music, but I find that I like it too! :D
Great video AG! More please!
***** More coming!
Marc is back! I've missed you.
Christopher wootton Thank you, Christopher... and I'm sorry! I was recovering from the Pro 2. But there is no rest for the wicked, and I'm going to be bombarding you with LOTS of synths very quickly this year. Get ready!
The oldest 'synth' in my collection. Picked it up at a yard sale for US 40$. Would have paid twice that. Its mixability, string and choral sounds can't beat matched IMHO.
lucky bastard. I never find any synths or keyboards at yard sales. Tips?
How long have you been off air Marc? Good to see you back man 😊
Now go get us those demos you promised is this year would be full of
Played one in a shop in 1980.. after trying a Mellotron! Was out of my price range back then, probably is now... the sound is lush.. John Foxx (Metamatic) strings?
impressive on paper, sounds like videogames. very good video though.
Fantastic review Marc, but why I'm really replying is to compliment your playing. Damn! You were tearing $h¡t up!
AJ Gapsquez Hey, thanks, AJ! I think with all of the demonstrating, I often forget to tell people that I'm a synth player. :D
great info thanks!
petercalandra Thank you, Peter!
The piece of music at 5:33 is phenomenal
Thank you!
@@automaticgainsay reminds me of The Legendary Pink Dots
Can't wait to see the 86% of original size reissue
Chevytravelleruk Ha ha!
so friggin dope.
ClamsAnonymous Hey, thanks!
Still have my old Lambda. Unfortunately one of the 3 main oscillators banks seems to have severe issues. Detunes uncontrollable. That hurts. Great instrument.
Hey AG, is the synth pad starting at 0:24 from the Lambda? It's quite gorgeous.
you have a shield insect on your shoulder, are you near an alotment or farm?
Nice to see you on here. I missed the crap out of you Marc Doty!
Nick Pelkey Hey, Nick! I'm back! You're going to get sick of me with all of the synths I'm about to demo.
Rescue me. I'm in fm programming hell. Having to remember how to load to cassette had been fun. Otherwise I find solace in making synths from tenz units.
On another topic (BMF). Any sound school ideas for remote communities. Like a correspondence or kit/video? Would be cool to do one in the local pre-k - 8.
4:29 I can actually imagine Marc standing on a stage in a tropical Hotel playing this to breakfast-eating fat american tourists. In 1987. Smiling and greeting visitors with a nod as they enter the food hall.
I also had a vision of Marc standing inside an elevator playing this every time someone gets in. What a lovely synth that I've almost heard nothing about before.
4:57 I imagine could be played in a smoke-filled jazz/funk club in 1979
6:00 And please do share your hanging-from-the-ceiling upside down playing style secret.
7:00 just screams for a sad looking british vocalist anno 1983
bytex666 Hey, thanks for the breakdown, Bitexion!
I really need a poly synth in my setup at some point. Something like the Lambda would definitely fit into the kind of stuff I do.
So, that was a stink bug, eh? I was wondering what the hell it was. We get there en mass up here in Virginia too. It's still too cold yet here for them, though.
At 7:22 you can see it. Seems to be a Coreidae. We germans call it 'Wanze'. wkr
***** Amazing. In Marc's videos we don't only learn about synthesizers, but also bugs. Hats off to you, sir.
The bug is obviously just chilling listening to the music.
bytex666 I'm also going to be moving into tax advice and home repair!
That was awesome. Did you write all of that music?
willystov Yes, all of my videos feature music I wrote and and often performed using only the device being demonstrated (except for drums). Thanks!
Anyone else see the bug on his shoulder?
I've been trying to pick one of these up for about two years. Not going to get an easier now.
milk bath I'm sorry! You must hurry! :D
Hahaa! Great demo as usual. Looking forward to the next in the series!
Hey Marc, was the stuff you were playing originals? Is there anywhere I can listen to your music?
Noved Nirtseg All originals! My music can be found at reverbnation.com/automaticgainsay
soundcloud.com/recondite
+AutomaticGainsay Thank you. Really great stuff.
Just ran across this Marc - what are your thoughts of this compared to the Delta?
Really no comparison. They are both so, so different. That being said, I like both!
@@automaticgainsay Thanks for the fast reply! And it is good to hear they have a vast difference to be honest.
The intro Music in this series is different than any of your other featured Synths, at least to my ear.
Almost sounds like the work of another composer entirely... the Lambda puts you in a different state of mind huh?
Cool Rhythm around 5:45√
I'm grateful for this review... I've seen this Synth on Vintage Synth Explorer ect. & always wondered about it. There's not been much other info available to me.
You should include a PayPal donate link for those of us who can't commit to Patreon :]
Caalamus Hey, thanks for your comments, Caalamus!
I suppose my goal with this music was to show that this string synth could be used for a lot more than prog or disco remakes. :D
That's one of the reasons I post these demos... I want people to recognize that there are some synth gems out there that weren't used by Kraftwerk or the basis for some electronic microsubgenre that are either really great sounding, or great for synthesis. :D
I will look into a PayPal donate link!
*****
...do it up man! I'd certainly give you a few bucks here & there. I can't afford Patreon though :[
But I definitely watch & enjoy your work√
Interesting! I had a library of lambda and delta sounds on my Kronos. That's the only thing I really miss about the Kronos. The VA and sample libraries of old Korg gear sounded really lush, but the keybads were so bad in 2011. I hope the Kronos 2 is better quality and will make these old gear somewhat accessible.
What about this tiny cockroach on your shoulder btw.? Is it a knob or some gimmick? Looks like an insect to me. :D
pcuimac It's what folks in these parts call a "stink bug." Halyomorpha halys.
They are everywhere, and there was one flying around while I was shooting. I was actually relieved that it had stopped flying around, but I didn't know that it was actually performing a photobomb in the process.
I think you now need to go into the Korg Trident because... damn.
Saibot216 Unfortunately, I very rarely do synths without any analog aspect!
But it is analog
AutomaticGainsay trident is 100% analog.
Is that bird crap on his back? I never knew that the Lambda's were so "involved."
YES
You know who really would have liked this? Tony Banks, when he was in early Genesis. It could have taken the place of his RMI piano.
Nicely done Mark but you actually do not demonstrate the contouring per note very well. This could just as well have been a demonstration video about how to avoid a paraphonic limitations through the aid of multitracking. :-)
The thing about it is that I can't imagine very many people using the brass sound in a fashion where the single filter / single envelope aspect is a problem. The only way this is going to be an issue is if you're using the brass sound like you'd use a piano. Now granted, someone might be interested in playing, for example, bass and chords at the same time... but that's just not the way people play synths anymore. Since multitrack recording is free and accessible to all, I can't really imagine someone playing the brass section that way.
And also, the Lambda isn't actually paraphonic, as the term was re-coined to describe synths where the sound was directed through a single amp and single filter... whereas each of the three oscillators in the Lambda, per note, have their own VCA. It's only half-paraphonic in the brass setting alone.
Oh wait.... triangle wave on a LAMBDA.... TRI-LAM......
Picked one up around 2004 for $40. It was... ok. It's quite limited, and given the choice, I'd put the money towards a much more flexible poly synth that could hit a lot of these sounds and then some, like the Prophet 600, for example. The machine itself is very attractive though, even if those rocker switches remind one of shitty living room electric organs. If the few sounds it offers are a staple of the kind of music you're making, then it might be worth something to you, otherwise it costs too much cash and desk space.
I made several more videos to show people exactly what this thing is capable of, and I wouldn't call it "limited," let alone "quite limited." If you're looking for a standard multiphonic, it's certainly not for you. But if you're willing to let IT show you what it can do, you can find a rich and useful palette of beautiful sounds that it is capable of.
I've seen the videos and enjoyed them! All I'm saying is that, to me, $700-$800 is a LOT for a preset-based instrument. But clearly, there are a lot of people who would happily shell out as much or more for this and other vintage string machines, so my opinion probably doesn't represent that of the majority of musicians. The Lambda represents an instrument that I'd be perfectly content to have as a VST or sample pack. Again, this has as much to do with its big footprint as it does its price tag.
Very Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
Jon Gardner That's what I thought! Someone else pointed out a similarity to Get Lucky, too.
Any "Revenge of Nerds" jokes yet? LAMBDA LAMBDA LAMBDA!
Nick Pelkey I missed a real opportunity with that.
Interesting story and details..... real painful sounds and songs. I can't go on
THEN GET THEE BEHIND US, SATAN!
Hope that I never hear your patches or songs. And, if I do, I hope for your sake that they’re fucking amazing.
is that bird shit on your shoulder?
Is that what it looks like to you?
AutomaticGainsay read down further. my bad! great vid btw
I'm not sure that playing everything in staccato style really shows off this synth.
oh
