Barney's brother, James (Wayne Brady), visits and Robin, the only one in the group that has never met him, is suprised. But James has a surprise for Barney that he finds difficult to swallow.

Same-sex marriage became legal in all of the US only in 2015, though in the New York state became legal in 2011, this episode is from 2006. Also I don't know if you know but Neil Patrick Harris (Barney) before this series was already a well known Broadway actor, and it was known that he's gay and was in a longterm relationship, so this was very much a needed stance at the time this series was broadcasted.
The actors of Barney, Lily and Robin were all in stable relationships since before HIMYM and their respective partners have played recurring characters in the series:
- Teran Killam (who was on Saturday Night Live and you may have seen in many sitcoms) is Cobie Smulders (Robin)'s husband and played Gary Blauman, Barney and Marshall's coworker
- Alexis Denisof (Wesley in Buffy) is Alyson Hannigan (Lily)'s husband and plays Sandy Rivers, Robin's insufferable co-anchor
- David Burtka is Neil's husband and plays Scooter, Lily's high-school boyfriend
They all appears many times.

James is iconic
I know this is late (reply to something you said in the past video) but one thing I can say for sure that HIMYM do better than Friends is the editing. It's thanks to the premise of the show, it's a story Ted tell to his kids, so they have a lot of lee way to do some funny editing to tell a story, you know, like when you told a story to someone, sometimes you pause and try to remember a detail, or you say one thing but then remember it's incorrect so you stopped to come back and fix it.
