Hamas said they didn't target civilians. Also over the years before October 7 we can see the death tolls. Hamas mostly killed Israeli soldiers while idf killed civilians including many children.
The americans committed the biggest acts of terrorism by targeting civilians in japan with fire bombing and atomic bombing and yet today they are still not called terrorists when they fit the definition exactly since it was a use of threat and force against civilians to scare the people to bring about achieving a political goal.

But Madela relented and called for an end to an armed struggle and became the symbol of reconciliation that led to peace. So please understand that history is complex and open to many interpretations and teachers (and even books) will be unintentionally selective and susceptible to confirmation bias.
If I recall correctly, Mandela didn't captured toddlers and old people from their homes, attacked a festival or called to elוmוnate all white people. Can't believe I need to explain to you that those things are bad.

How is Israel going to achieve peace with ones they deem as terrorist? It seems like Israel wants no resistance while they do such harm to a society that wants rights to live and grow to learn to succeed to pursue self interest, freedom of movement and be happy! Israel's catastrophic mistake over the years has been to imagine military might is the only way to defeat their enemies. It has simply achieved the opposite - Hamas, Islamic Jihad & Hezbollah have thrived on the destruction and the countless civilian lives lost due to Israeli heavy-handedness, including the harsh treatment of Palestinians living in the occupied territories. This has just increased mistrust and hatred on both sides. If Israel wants to win the peace, it needs to focus on the Palestinian people and take into account their legitimate rights and aspirations. Until some measure of trust and mutual recognition is achieved, there can be no lasting peace.
