My reasoning could be wrong on this, but keep in mind that the lightmaker was stolen, so the empire was supposed to compensate Alderaan, meaning the Empire payed for that too, maybe. Again, my logic might be wrong
I believe you are correct, though the compensation was never technically shown, they potentially destroyed a star destroyer with the only deficit being fuel and crew, so if they were paid it was a net gain in profit vs a few billion credits in losses.
They sacrificed a probably hundreds of ships before they got to that point though, at minimal it would have cost a ton of starfighters to fend off the ties even if they had gone in right away with shields down.
Lando used energy AND luck. Luke used 2 torps. Lando used up a lifetime of good luck. I ask you, can you put a price on luck? People say it was the force that helped Luke get his 2 torps swimming down that exhaust shaft. A 1 in a million shot... Thats more than the force. I say it was LUCK that got the Death Star pregnant errrm i mean exploded.
A mention should be made of the Battle of Yavin as a whole, not just Luke Skywalker's role in it. The Rebels only had thirty starfighters to send against the Death Star, yet the battle was won. True, most of the fighters didn't make it back, but that's a bargain no matter how you look at it.
The casualty ratio is definitely asymmetric as well - yes, the Rebels lost 30-ish starfighters and skilled pilots, but the Imps lost millions of personnel including their most skilled pilots, troopers and commanders, plus a state of the art and ludicrously expensive battle station. It's absurdly lop-sided!

As a member of the legends community, thats just objectively untrue, the only post ROTJ storyline, that received as much criticism as you described was the pre NJO, Dark Empire series. The Majority of NJO and TFUJ is some of the most gateway, and well recieved works.
Nitpick on Crynyd: that was not THAT cost efficient due what happened BEFORE he rammed the Executor. Namely, the many ships that had been taken out earlier in the battle while firing at the Executor (we see a Nebulon-B exchanging broadsides with the dreadnought), a large part of the Rebel fleet firing everything they had at the Executor and bringing most of the shields down (we saw Ackbar giving the order) enough for a pair of fighters to nail the bridge shield generators, and finally the fighter attack wave on the bridge of which Arvel Crynyd was the ONLY one who got through with a damaged fighter, at which point he decided that if he was going to die he'd ram that bridge.

objection: the cost efficiency of the battle of yavin was not just a single proton torpedo for the death star. you failed to equate in lost x-wings, y-wings and missed proton torpedos. granted it's not really necessary given how expensive the death star was in comparison to said loses but still. accuracy is important when comparing cost efficiency.

Yes 2 different franchises and slightly different philosophical views, but they both have their positive aspects. It's time to write good New Star Wars movies again and not the fucking prequels and origin series for every little character that ever existed.
