Glad I’m not the only one! Thought of “don” pretty quickly, but was also fixated on ‘fun’ as the definition. The show letter hint gave me d, but still needed to confirm the definition. Then got it pretty quick. Great clue.
I had a similar experience. I also tried playing around with a mafia boss being a capo or a godfather. At one point I was imagining you had to "rob" the word "godfather" of a letter and then find an anagram. I asked for a letter and got the "d"; asked for a second and got the "h"; so now I was even more convinced "godfather" had something to do with it. So I tried putting the vowels from "godfather" between the "h" and the "d" -- "hod...", "had..." and finally got "hed...", and that's when it finally clicked.
I thought this was quite straightforward too. 4 under par. You have taught me well oh master. I’m 58 under par now on 36 day streak since starting doing these every day, after some weeks of watching your posts on Instagram. Had no clue how to do these until I saw your explanations. You have opened up a new world to me..! Thank you!
I’m 71 under on a 36 day heheh - but I solved this one 2 under. Kicked my ass 😓 figured out heist but got massively tunnel visioned on mafia boss being “M”
I had a similar struggle with a slight difference. I got the “don” for mafia boss straight away. So I decided that I needed to anagram a five letter synonym for robbery. All I could think of was “theft” and “steal” and those didn’t work. So I took the clue to find out that the definition was “fun sort.” Finally I googled synonyms for robbery to get the answer.
I started with don in the middle (involved) and thought of the Oceans 11 robbery being a “fun” heist and BAM …! Thanks to all your patient explainers along the way , I’m starting to get it!!
I found this one easier than i expected to after the warning. I was fully expecting to be 6 over par 😂 I worked out Don quite quickly but needed some hints to get the rest. I definitely was not expecting 'sort' to be part of the definition.
Your Instagram warning was appreciated. Spent 25 minutes on it but got 4 under par. Some of the options I was considering: - Definition “fun”, “sort of” anagram indicator, “robbery” meaning take a letter, “mafia boss” being fodder, i.e take one word away from “mafia boss”, jumble it to get fun. - Definition “boss”, “fun sort of” meaning anagram, “robbery involving” meaning take a letter from a word for mafia, “syndicate”. Found that “-dent” and “-sent” were possible so I probably spent 6 minutes of anagrams here. - Same as the previous one, but “theft” involving the word “mob” - “Fun” being the definition, “sort of” being anagram, “theft” being word for robbery, “don” for mafia boss. And probably a few more that I’m forgetting. Finally got it after considering NOT to anagram the synonyms for robbery and mafia boss.
I immediately got "don" and then my brain started exclusively finding words with "dom" instead. Exhausting. I needed two letters - the "h" is what gave it away. Excellent clue.
I was terrified after seeing the dire warning you put on social media, but I got it in a heartbeat without any clues. Yet the other day I stared for about half hour and used three clues on one of the simplest ones yet 😅 Funny how our brains all work
Trying to “sort” robbery and add “M” is exactly what I was trying to do. I have never heard the term don before, I THOUGHT about a synonym for robbery (because SORT of robbery) but then when I saw “fun sort” was the definition I was like oh no there’s no need for a synonym here. 0/10 hardest clue yet, bring on tomorrow 😂
A really good one. I did get this with one hint, am sort of amazed!!!! Worked off finding options for robbery and mafia boss. Got there in the end. Great fun.
That was excellent. I knew what I had to do but couldn't quite get to the alternative word for robbery. Took two letters and then solved it. Great clue :)
I knew “Don” and that it would be in the middle, but I couldn’t think of the word “heist”. I tried theft and a ways to incorporate don into it. But I needed a hint to get the H. Once I got there I had it.
Went through the same process as you, and literally laughed out loud when I finally got it! That was tricky, but lots of fun. I look forward to my daily Minute Cryptic time, thank you for creating it.
"Involving mafia boss" was an immediate flag to me, pointing out only small word to use, and from there it was just racking my brain for synonyms for robbery. Four under par!
I immediately thought mafia boss had to be don, and then sort of shifted it back and forth trying to get a word for fun. Hedonism didn't seem to work, but I realized hedonist could be a 'fun sort', and that "gave me" heist to prove it was likely the right solve. A bit backwards, but very satisfying to get four under par knowing it had nearly stumped you!
got this one in only a couple minutes! surprised everyone had trouble on this? thought fun was the definition but knew it would be brutal so maybe fun sort? immediately thought hedonist. keep up guys.
Used a lot of my tricks for this one today! I needed the definition clue, then put the word “don” into a scrabble solver generator with any five letter synonyms for robbery I could find! Gave me 3 under par with a bit of internet sleuthing to back me up
@@fico1784 well I suppose it’s about what your definition of cheating and success is! For me, I love just trying to work out how the clue is written more so than finding anagrams. I get a kick out of it this way and happy to play this way. Hope you had fun with this clue doing it your way too!
Amazing clue!! Was equally stuck in “sort” an an anagram indicator. I got “don” as well, and once I got the clue letter, everything quickly fell into place. Two under par. I’ll take it.
Thanks to this channel appearing in my feed a short while ago, I finally started to take up cryptic crosswords after years of thinking it was too hard. Today is the first time I felt like I grokked what was going on - no hints, first guess!
Great clue! It took me some time to get it, but got there 4 under par. I even spent some time thinking the answer could be a synonym of boss. And ended up down the route of anagrams of "fun sort" removing (robbing) "of" and adding mob for mafia??? Was not working so I came back to it later, and started from a different angle. Phew. Really enjoyed it!
Here for the answer as well as the thinking behind it. I got the Mafia boss part almost immediately but phathom the rest of it. (now trying to imagine a cryptic clue for Phathom!)
Saw DON but wasn’t sure where it fit within the word. Happy to get the first letter as a clue and then the proverbial penny dropped. 1 under par. Happy Sunday!
1 under par for me. Figured don from the get go. Thought sort could be an anagram indicator. Then had the word theft for robbery and tried that with no luck. Used another letter and then got it!
I actually got it! Really happy as I only started learning about cryptics a few months ago and I didn't use a single hint. I also tried 'sorting' various words for robbery and then putting 'don' in the middle, and then at one point I had the words 'heist' and 'don' written side by side and I noticed the answer. Only after confirming that it was correct did I manage to figure out that the definition was 'fun sort' rather than 'fun' as I was confused why 'heist' had not been rearranged at all. Probably my proudest solve so far so I came straight to the comments to gloat haha
Figured out "don" the moment i saw mafia boss, then used 3 clues only for them to reveal h, d, and n. Tried to answer random words such as hodonish and hidoning then figured that I need to use "robbery"... HEDONIST just makes sense
Got don immediately, spotted the definition quickly too, then tried some different 5 letter words for robbery putting don in slightly different places - took about 3 mins, 4 under par
Wow tricksy tricksy! I too fell for thinking it was an anagram indicator with an 'm' then I managed to get 'don' and thought maybe a synonym of robbery was required after all. After many attempts at cracking it I finally got there. Phew!
Once I knew fun sort was the definition thanks to a hint I managed to get heist and I’d already had Don from playing around with a variety of other ideas! Took me a while and I had to keep coming back to it! 3 under par!
Needed a letter but after the warning on IG was determined to get it. Got stuck on trying to use boss as the definition for a while, with mob as the alternative for mafia, but once I had the D, don seemed like a good bet. Nice one.
Really pleased with this one. Got Don instantly but took me a while to think of the word for fun. Came up with hedonism which I thought would be ok since this is "almost" heist (hence 'sort of') but this wasn't quite right. I was so sure I was on the right track I went for hedonist which was correct but doesn't quite mean 'fun'. Hadn't spotted 'fun sort' as the definition that made it much more satisfying. Great clue today!
Looked at it this morning and couldn’t work it out. Left it for hours and my subconscious must have been doing over time because I came back and solved it with no clues. Very happy with myself.
This indeed was a clue to struggle with. Had to reach 1 under par - sort misled me into anagramming robbery a ton. I had several gut feelings what should be included based on the trigger of "mafia boss" = don, capo, m, etc.
Glad you found this one hard too 😂 I had “don” from the start and tried hedonic, hedonism, etc. for ages… partly because I couldn’t remember how many D’s and N’s are in that word 😅
Had to google Mafia Boss to get Don, but figured out Heist immediately. Great clue, 4 under par! 🎉 Although you didn't have to scare us by warning us about this ''brutul'' clue! 😂
I thought I was so smart getting hedonism straight away, but that was wrong. 😳 So I went down a rabbit hole thinking it was an anagram of robbery with an m added - no. Finally asked for a letter and got the D, and remembered heist. 3 under par but it took me a while!

But for some reason I cannot get my head into these type of clues since i never know when to look for synonyms.. I barely ever get these, but this one I got in about a minute. Couldn’t have done without your expert tutelage, though, and I’m hoping this a breakthrough for me
I had the right approach from the start, putting a word for robbery around don, and coincidentally was working on a crossword this week where one answer was hedonist, so this came to me very quickly.
I guessed it was don in the middle of the synonym for robbery - which it thankfully was. But I couldn't get the synonym for fun. Used two letters to get it. Enjoyed this one
one under par today. never in my life ever do i clock the correct definition here, i was thinking exactly how you were at first. mafia boss was a bit of knowledge that i only dredged up thanks to a lucky letter reveal, and with one more letter i pieced it together. brutal, absolutely worthy of its par 4 status
Didn’t realize the definition was “fun sort” until I watched the video. Got Heist straight away and knew had to put a synonym of mafia boss inside it. And as soon as I landed on Don, i just plugged the word in. I thought Hedonist and fun being synonymous seemed like a stretch but i guess “fun sort” kinda works. Really happy with the 4 under par though! Could we have profiles in this so we can track our records - would be fun that way!
I got don for mafia boss and had theft for robbery. Used the he and don to make a guess and got it in one. But that wasn’t using the clues properly. Had to watch the explanation to see how I should have done it.
I feel like I got a bit lucky in that I 'stumbled' onto the two key words relatively early on, and then brute-forced the anagram a bit. Could easily have spent ages going down the wrong route with either, and/or perhaps trying to anagram out the wrong words.
I thought of Don immediately and didn’t think of Sort as an anagram indicator … even though I thought Fun was the definition, not Fun Sort, I got hedonism. I realized that Heism wasn’t a sort of robbery, but Heist was. No hints!
I was also fixated on the word fun as being the defination.. I knew Don will be in middle of the word, but was busy sorting the synonym for robbery 😅, finally got it under 1 par
So the last two series I (re)watched are Money Heist and Breaking Bad. You see where I'm going with this. Add to that I've been swiping left on Tinder too much with bios that say "I'm a hedonist", I figured it out pretty fast!
I was thinking I had to “rob” a long word for mafia boss, but couldn’t make that work. With a few letters as hints, I realised it was “don” in the middle and the rest fell into place.
I figured out the words don and heist but no idea how to put them together. I think the issue was the definition, I wouldn't describe a fun person as a hedonist. Hedonists are pleasure seekers but they're not necessarily fun to be around.
I too was fixated with anagramming robbery with m, luckily abandoned that sharpish. Got don, got heist and figured the rest with some letters. One under par, but in the end I’m not sure a hedonist is a fun sort…
Took a minute on this one, figured mafia boss was either m or don, tried to anagram robbery and m, didn’t work so then went down the don route and got it quickly from there. 4 under par. Great clue.
Found it really hard. Went through exactly same process - fixated on fun. Got don straight away but wasn’t convinced. It was hard because the definition was odd and there were two synonyms so there was no certainty.
As soon as I saw that it was 4-under par, I got a bit scared! I initially wondered if it had something to do with "godfather". Then I wondered if "fun sort" meant an anagram, but perhaps with one letter changed. I couldn't make "theft" or "steal" work, but when the right synonym for "robbery" came up, I thought it was worth a guess!
A boss is a leader, so thinking it meant the first letter of mafia was quite reasonable. Although if the clue actually said leader instead of boss it would be even more misleading.
That word ‘sort’ was screaming out to be an anagram indicator. Tricky, but satisfying to eventually get past that and solve it.
I love that you shared your struggles with this clue. You’re taking us on a fabulous journey!
Glad I’m not the only one! Thought of “don” pretty quickly, but was also fixated on ‘fun’ as the definition. The show letter hint gave me d, but still needed to confirm the definition. Then got it pretty quick. Great clue.

Figured out Mafia boss was Don but struggled with the robbery bit

I am both proud and amazed I got this in about ten seconds! Now tomorrow will have an easy clue and I won’t get it! 😂
I literally worked it out! But the only 5-letter word for robbery I could think of was theft
Trying to “sort” robbery and add “M” is exactly what I was trying to do. I have never heard the term don before, I THOUGHT about a synonym for robbery (because SORT of robbery) but then when I saw “fun sort” was the definition I was like oh no there’s no need for a synonym here.

This was tricky. It was the "of" that threw me. Had to use the hint for the definition. After that it fell into place.
Yes! Did not like the word "of" here. Didn't know what to do with it.
Wow even using the hint I thought it pertained to algorithms and sorting methods
Same here 🫠
I started with ‘don’, and initially played around with ‘theft’, which had enough similar letters that the true answer became clear.
This was fun. I guess I was extra vigilant with synonyms because of your warning, so I got it pretty fast. Thank you for teaching us daily!
My thinking was exactly the same as you. Just before using a clue I figured it out 🙌
I am glad that I eventually worked this out!! Loved this one!
This was so much easier than some of the clues from earlier this week!
I knew “Don” and that it would be in the middle, but I couldn’t think of the word “heist”. I tried theft and a ways to incorporate don into it. But I needed a hint to get the H. Once I got there I had it.
Feeling a bit embarrassed that I’d never heard of the word don for a mafia boss. You learn something every day!
Clearly never watched the Godfather
Very clever - that was tricky. I was sure that I had it with “mischief” and needed the hint and two letters to get the answer!
Got this one immediately, having done lots previous has certainly made longer ones less intimidating! Thanks!
You got me back into cryptic crossword after 40 years! Can't thank you enough.

This indeed was a clue to struggle with. Had to reach 1 under par - sort misled me into anagramming robbery a ton. I had several gut feelings what should be included based on the trigger of "mafia boss" = don, capo, m, etc.
This one made me say “wow that was awesome” when I finally figured it out
One of the most satisfying solves of late - fun job
The red herring was made even better (worse?) by the fact that “merry” was part of the potential anagram. Was convincing myself merrybob was a word 😅
Glad you found this one hard too 😂 I had “don” from the start and tried hedonic, hedonism, etc. for ages… partly because I couldn’t remember how many D’s and N’s are in that word 😅
Weird - this was one of my quickest solves
Had to google Mafia Boss to get Don, but figured out Heist immediately. Great clue, 4 under par! 🎉 Although you didn't have to scare us by warning us about this ''brutul'' clue! 😂
I was the opposite - I got don easily but got stuck with theft instead of heist
I thought I was so smart getting hedonism straight away, but that was wrong. 😳 So I went down a rabbit hole thinking it was an anagram of robbery with an m added - no. Finally asked for a letter and got the D, and remembered heist. 3 under par but it took me a while!
Very pleased with myself for getting this one, slightly inspired by the inside no 9 commedia dell'arte episode to resolve this.
I found too many options for the definition: fun, fun sort, boss, mafia boss. I saw early on that don would go inside a word for robbery. Steal and theft didn’t work. So I went to the thesaurus and found heist. That did it. Good one!!

I am genuinely so pleased with myself that I was able to get this, I didn’t even know “hedonist” was a word😂

I had the right approach from the start, putting a word for robbery around don, and coincidentally was working on a crossword this week where one answer was hedonist, so this came to me very quickly.
Felt this was easier than eggs in trash 😂
Got lucky (or maybe beginner’s luck) because I didn’t even think to approach “mafia boss” the way you did.

this one was brutal. don't love that "of" just hanging around. but "don" for mafia boss was straightforward so it wasn't too too difficult
Didn’t realize the definition was “fun sort” until I watched the video. Got Heist straight away and knew had to put a synonym of mafia boss inside it. Condor

You weren't joking about the absolutely brutal part

For me the big surprise here was the Australian (and presumably British?) pronunciation of the word “hedonist”! (In the US we say “heedonist”)
Great clue.
Got Don, quite quickly. Took forever for heist.
Very proud of myself for this one. Didn't even know what hedonist means, but got it through the wordplay
Did Liam have a bad day when he wrote this. Brutal indeed lol
Love this one. Needed definition and one letter and google mafia boss and got it.
Instead of heist, I was trying theft unsuccessfully, esp since it also has the he needed for the beginning, still 2 under works for me!
You lift me up…only so I have further to fall! 😂
A boss is a leader, so thinking it meant the first letter of mafia was quite reasonable. Although if the clue actually said leader instead of boss it would be even more misleading.
