  • Sophia grew up in Liberia, Africa. Throughout her childhood, she suffered from instances of sexual abuse, which led to isolation and fear of men. Her mom made the difficult decision to put her up for adoption, so she could live a better life in America. Sophia heard about Mercy many years before applying. But it was not until Sophia was in a relationship that made her realize how unhealthy she really was. She always had a passion to get married and start a family, but she knew she couldn’t do any of that because she was so afraid of life at the time. That is when Sophia applied to Mercy.
Six months into the program was when she decided she was there for herself and not to please anyone else. When she made this decision, God started changing her heart and opening her eyes. Through her time at Mercy, she learned to talk to God despite the shame she felt. She overcame the fear of authority, speaking to others, and even making eye contact. God lifted those fears from her and allowed her to live freely and obediently to the Lord.
