You hit on something I' ve been thinking about a lot lately. The Greatest Generation. They use that term for a lot of things, but I don't think anyone has applied it to music as it should be. Born in 1946. same as Dolly, Linda and quite a few others. As kids, we listened to top 40 radio, and many oi the popular top 40 survey sites will back this up - we were exposed to such a variety of music that way. And during that time, there were a lot of great country artists that topped the charts. It was also blues, soul, movie themes, some holdover easy listening, and soon Tom Rush and Gordon Lightfoot. My point is that all these people resonate with me. And when I get in a position to listen to a lot of their music, I always get the same reacion.
I've seem them on TV shows. many in person, and have appreciated them all over the spectrum. Because to me it all comes down to the same thing - the Greatest Generation of music. If you ever saw the Rock and Roll Graffiti show on the Nashville Network, you would get a sense of it. I'm maybe saying from 1952 - By 1970 anything from AM radio was off my radar screen except for a very few that sounded older. I'm not quite sure where my country cutoff would be - early 80s probably. All this babbling is to say that I see all these people as one, and love them very much. They are my life.

Charley toured Scandinavia in 1972, and I saw him then. The show was recorded by our national radio station and broadcast some time later, and I recorded it on my open reel tape recorder. He had a show in Gothenburg, Sweden, and after the show they went out for a meal. The restaurant had a band, and when Charley and the Pridesmen were asked to play a song they did - for the rest of the night out of sheer love of music. Great guys.

I don't know why today's country feels like it has to compete with pop music to the point that there's hardly a difference. A person says below in the comments that all today's country's is pop music with a little twang. I would think that country musicians would know by now that there will always be country music fans, and they can do their own thing and still be loved by their fans.

A class act, as are all of Charley's. His bands were flooded with some of the best musicians around. Welk's band is no exception, Green is remarkable. Re: today's country - If the song doesn't start with either a steel or a fiddle, there is good chance, maybe 90% (some piano), that it isn't real country. If you can't dance to it, or understand the words (and the words make sense and reflect times which most of us have experienced), it probably is not real country. It is interesting that many of today's "artists", who tend to sing the throw away, disposable songs being offered, almost always get a solid round of applause if they brave out an old favorite, one which will continue to be played 30 years from now, and remembered, both for the melody and word for word.

Charley Pride, the best ballad singer in classic country! Lloyd Green one of the top "steelers" along with players like Weldon Myrick, Hal Rugg, Curly Chalker, Buddy Emmons, Bud Charlton, Dick Overby, and others. The pedal steel can really enhance a country song! Charley's voice blends in perfectly with the pedal steel guitar.

I remember daddy was watching a baseball game on TV, and the camera focused in on Charley in the audience. My sister and I freaked, "CHARLEY PRIDE! CHARLEY PRIDE!" and we waved at the TV...he waved back, and we *really* freaked! Takes me back to road trips to my aunt's over the Cascades, listening to his 8-tracks in the car...

I love love love this clip. Funniest thing is when Lloyd starts up on the intro and the bass player isn't ready which causes the three first notes on the bass to be fumblin' about untill he catches up. Truly wonderful song, thank you so much Charlie and friends!

Give credit not only to Lloyd Green on the steel guitar but also to The men in Lawrence Welk’s band who backed Charley Pride on this song: Buddy Clark on bass, Buddy Merrill on acoustic guitar, Neil Levang on electric guitar, and Johnny Klein on drums.

Wow! No kidding! My sentiments exactly. Mr. Brooks didn't do it without help but was in my opinion one of the most influential destroyers of country music. And sadly he is a good singer and can do real honest country if only he would have, but it was and always will be about Garth, not the genre.
