One way of starting from scratch is to imagine you have experienced a catastrophe. Hopefully, this will never happen to you, but when I evacuated for Katrina, I had limited funds (local bank account was frozen). I went to Target and bought bargain versions of a presentable wardrobe: 2 pairs well fitting jeans, 2 nice T-shirts, a lightweight blazer in a plaid earthtone palette, and the Target version of Frye harness boots. En route to my final destination, I visited my brother's young family in a Chicago suburb. I was treated to a hair appointment and afterwards stopped at a hospital thrift shop where I 'scored' a new black cashmere turtleneck. I later found a man's smaller size Harris tweed jacket and an oversized denim jacket at another thrift. Fewer than 10 items got me through a Wisconsin autumn.

So this may be a nosy question, but I'm curious about why your local bank account was frozen...if it was for a personal reason, that's understandable, but if it had something to do with the evacuation/impending catastrophe, then why?

What a lovely video, thank you Jennifer!
May I make a suggestion for the ‘maybe-pile’? It’s from the wonderful Diane in Denmark (she is also on YT).
She suggests wearing your maybe-clothes for a day ‘on probation’.
This way you will quickly experience why you never reach for this item (too itchy, too tight, etc).
After that it’s easy to let it go.
No need to store it for 6 months or feel guilt.
    I hope this helps!
    Best wishes from the Netherlands!

Thank you, Jennifer, for sharing the video. I am originally Japanese and your book (Lessons from Madame Chic) was introduced in a Japanese paper 7 or 8 years ago. The Japanese title of the book was like "French has only 10 wardrobe." I was so fascinated by this title and purchased the book immediately. I don't have so much clothes now as I used to do. But, thanks to you, it is so much easier to choose my daily outfit and enjoy combining the clothes that I have.

Thrifting helped me so much when I realized that I wanted to over haul my wardrobe from frumpy, baggy, unkept, stay-at-home-mom, to reflect my true personality. I made a lot of experimental mistakes and it was nice when I had only spent $4 on each item that I ended up realizing that I didn’t like, and vice versa.
Also, aligning with aesthetic styles that I was attracted to really helped narrow down what felt like “me”. I really love a rugged, feminine, Boho style. But I also love the look of a 1940s archeologist/explorer. So as long as I have both these elements in my wardrobe, I feel like “me”.

I started completely over. I didn’t have a lot to begin with but I hated it. The key for me was shopping second hand near wealthy neighborhoods. My aunt told me about a second hand store near her that had incredible name brand clothing for under $4 a piece with specialty items marked at $10 or $20. It is right next to a wealthy neighborhood. I make the drive 1.5 hrs away seasonally and stock up for less than $100. Life changing! I am excited to get dressed now!

You introduced me to the brand Karina. I love their dresses with huge pockets and now, only wear dresses. If it’s chilly (I live in Florida), I add a sweater and/or leggings. Seven dresses make up my entire seasonal wardrobe. There is absolutely no thinking of what to wear each day! It’s simply the dress on the left side of the row of dresses.

I love this whole philosophy! Thanks to you, Jennifer, my closet is a joy to walk into!
For me, it wasn’t easy. I was clinging to my comfortable sweatpants. Might I suggest that you mention that for some, The Lethal Option is the only way to go. What do I mean by The Lethal Option? Donate, kicking and screaming, your “safety blanket” clothes. Every. Last. Piece. Otherwise, you will do what I did and wear the ONE track suit (sweats and sweatshirt) you permitted yourself to keep, EVERY day🤣 while beautiful dresses hung in my closet, unworn. What on EARTH was preventing me? It was so strange, and I guess I really needed that wakeup call to take the leap and let go of “the old me”. It was a HUGE leap! But worth it!❤

Jennifer, I have just finished reading your book and I must say that I really loved it, I found it very inspiring. We currently live so carelessly, that is is really refreshing to be reminded that it may be different. However, I found in your book one very problematic thing: promoting “fois gras”. Geese in France are treated with such a horribly cruelty, that United Kingdom and Poland even introduced a ban on importing fois gras. I hope you will make in any next edition a correction and remove this fragment. I wish you all the best!

Hi Jennifer! The ten item wardrobe concept is what hooked me when I started following your channel many years ago - in addition to who you are: your authenticity and pleasant demeanor. 🥰 I can attest to the ten item wardrobe giving clarity. Whenever I choose my 10 items & extras at the beginning of each season, I have many “ah-ha” moments as to why I am not as inclined to wear, for example, a particular pair of pants over another. This clarity helps me to hone in on my true style and what works best for my lifestyle. I get many comments from friends saying that I am always well-dressed. 💁🏻‍♀️ Thank you for all your guidance! ~Emilie

My problem isn't to curate what I have but rather to wear what I've decided on, instead of the same default around the house stuff. I'm an extreme introvert, homeschooler, so I don't get out of the house more than two or three times a week. I can't get over the mental block of saving my better clothes for leaving the house. I also don't wear shoes indoors (cultural upbringing), so I don't feel totally put together, which means I'm comfortable in my slippers or bare feet. I will not compromise comfort, especially in my own home. Is there a work around for this?

During my corporate career years (which, sadly, ended in early retirement because of an injury), ten different outfits, repeating most separates in different combinations, was considered an adequate or good work wardrobe. Each outfit only had to be repeated once a month, that was fine. Many women had even fewer outfits, especially when starting their careers. Nowadays, we have enormous wardrobes and I am among the worst offenders! The “problem”, if there is one, is that I love and wear every item, they all fit well (now) and are high-quality natural fabrics/materials. Yes, my storage space is tight and it’s hard to find things, but there’s nothing I currently want to part with, I edit constantly, most are very recent purchases. I had to nearly buy a whole new wardrobe last year because of almost a decade of weight loss, so nothing is particularly dated, except maybe for some of my footwear, but that’s ok, if they’re high quality, classic and comfy. I probably over-purchased, but I love having the variety and selection that I never could afford before. I also still wear many of my older, bigger items, some coats are ok, and all footwear and accessories, which I love. Plus, getting dresses is so much more fun now that I’m a size 6/8 again!

I agree w @rocketmom. I have quite a lot of clothes for a couple of reasons: my size has changed minimally since my early 20s, and I try to buy good quality classics or clothes that are unique, so never in or out. My closet is pretty small so I don’t have a ton of clothes but they all fit and I wear them all. There’s one particular skirt that I’ve had for probably 35 years!! I still love it.

She linked the storage cubes as she used. I believe she stores these in her closet. I've seen similar cubes in Aldi and the dollar tree

Please help me with my wardrobe what can I do to get a 10 item wardrobe and add classy essentials. I just don’t know what my style is anymore. What I do know is I love jeans and trousers with a nice jacket. I have the vision but never find what I actually like.

??what if your lifestyle is so simple (walking the dog, retired, super casual) that sports pants and t-shirts is all your wardrobe requires? How do you get pleasure out of your wardrobe when this is your daily life, as good as that life is?

If it’s an option for you, you could buy somewhat dressier clothes that are still comfortable. Just because that’s all you require, it doesn’t mean you’re not allowed anything else! 😉

When you look in the mirror do you say, that will work? If so elevate to what you see to "looking good" to you. Last week I put three items I've had for awhile, put them on together and loved it! That is where the pleasure is.

I work in increments so that I don't get overwhelmed. Every season I have a big garbage bag to be donated to a local charity. Books I give to my book worm friend. Of course, undies get thrown out.

Most people can’t afford the more expensive items you get for free. How are we to live on ten items a season they will wear out so fast.

Thrifting. Search out 5 places on your routine outings be it a thrift shop, flea market, etc. in a more affluent area. Whenever you are in the area of one, stop in. It really doesn't take long. Before you know it you will have 2or3 you know will most likely have what you want.

I understand wanting to try different styles of video now you gave a professional editor but I really didn’t enjoy the purchased B roll. It made the video feel quite mass produced and like any one of hundreds of other style RUclipsrs. It really didn’t really feel like a Jennifer L Scott / Daily Connoisseur video.

9:31 how interesting, I find that interior designers also have the best style as well 🤍 it must be the principles they follow in interiors that they apply to themselves!
