  • A monumental grid of SIXTY pre-'66 touring cars doing battle at the Festival this summer. A huge line-up of Cortinas taking on the mighty muscle of Mustangs, Falcons and Galaxies with nimble Minis charging up the field too. A premature race finish for one driver mixed things up for the final results. Enjoy the race! 🏁

I lived through the years when these cars raced road courses on the West Coast of America in the 1960s and 1970s. Mustangs, Falcons, and Comets all use about the same running gear so they are extremely popular today for vintage racing. They all run first gen Ford small blocks, top loader 4 speeds and 9" Ford rear ends. I love sedan racing.

FALCONS not Galaxies (though a single Galaxie is in race) … and yes, the Falcons were homologated with fiberglass fenders by Holman Moody in 1964.

Such a shame about the Hart's Alfa Romeo. Did not see it again after Pit Window. Does anyone have any info about the car? At the beginning it really put on a show and was passed over , for a while, by the commentators as they were more interested in talking up the Cortinas.

In the States, Falcons had nowhere to race that the public, at large, knew of. Grand National (Galaxie-sized) cars got all the headlines. In 1960, a race for compact cars was tried by NASCAR, the governing body of stock car racing, but it was a blowout for Chrysler Valiants, which had an enormous horsepower edge over the Falcons and Corvairs, as there were not yet V-8 engines in compacts, and the series was abandoned. Valiants came home 1st through 7th, I believe.

The Falcons stayed and raced as they were run in the Monte Carlo rally by Alan Mann racing.
The Galaxies in the UK,63 and 64 were replaced by the 64 ex Tour de France Mustangs, the Falcons although older were replacing the Mustangs as the rules were more relaxed and allowed the Falcons better performance.
Camaros came across the pond as well, 67/68 versions then the 1970 versions, always made for an interesting mix.
Think in the early seventies there was even a 1970 hemi Cuda .

It would be interesting if the evolution of car technology, much like how Gundam returned to close-combat due to Minovsky particles, leads to the resurgence of drift driving in racing.

Correct! The commentators are unaware that the Mustang used the identical platform, originally created for the Falcon. Perhaps there's a different weight bias. I owned a '67 Mustang with the 4.7 V-8, and it was quite tail happy.

Mustangs I think have a 1200kg homologated weight the falcons thanks to the work of Holman moody has lots of trick bits homologated and have a much lower weight they can run at. Although I seem to think Mustangs can run fatter tyres than the falcons. Both run 400hp plus engines some probably have. Questionable engines too
