I think she sounds like a New Yorker, and there's probably some of her Northeastern/New Hampshire accent mixed in there too. Whereas now, she's been a resident of Los Angeles for quite a while. So I can totally understand how she'd sound really different!

Likely because she was doing a bit rather than being herself. I'd probably want to do the same in her place, it's far easier to play a rehearsed character in that kind of situation than it is to be yourself.
@@hambino28 Close. Actually, If you'd listen to the podcast last week, you would have known that Sarah planned to make out with Conan after the show. But when he came to the greenroom to introduce himself before the taping, he told her that he just got engaged, so that plan went out the window.

Always annoying when comedians use stand-up material in an interview like this. Was definitely more common in the 80s and 90s, I think, before it became known as something both the audience and hosts don't appreciate very much. Norm Macdonald is one of the only who can pull it off - and he usually comes up with a bit seconds before coming out.

You are going to be really freaked out when you realize that basically all talk show performances are setup. The guests tell the producers what they want to talk about... The producers have to approve the questions, and with controversial guests historically the network censors had to approve the answers. Then It's written up on the note cards on the desk. It's part of the whole reason for the desk. So normally you don't notice this because the guests are actors and they are acting as if it's a normal conversation. Good talk show hosts can memorize the questions and then pretend to throw away the cards, and Conan eventually got rid of the cards and the desk to give the show a more natural conversational style. But it's all an artiface because Conan has really good memory. He also borrows from the long-format investigative interview (think 20/20 or Charlie Rose) and does some research so he can bring more to the interview than just pre-screened questions.
Most talk shows are rehearsed without the guests (unless the guests do a setup bit, then that part they rehearse). Some shows may take all of that preparation a step forward... Jimmy Fallon appears to be actually performing a show that is fully rehearsed with guests in order to make it extremely smooth, which I think is why sometimes he laughs before a punchline. Since most of his guests are actors and performers, they can make it appear natural, often doing that better than Jimmy.
@@patreekotime4578 still, though, it's noticable when comics are doing material versus having a conversation. And if they are doing material in the conversation, it's usually specific for the interview and not something you will also see in their show.

Watching this and imagining how Conan would conduct this interview today, you can just feel when he would crack a joke during those awkward silences. Not that he wasn’t capable of doing it back then. It seemed like stage fright and just lack of experience. It’s a nice contrast to the Conan of today.

I saw this back when it aired and I was like 15 or so. I can't believe I ever thought Conan and Sarah were "old" while I watching this. They're kids. Even her voice is that of a young girl.

Love Conan. He's the best current talk show host still on the air and has been for quite some time now with his offsite shoots, crazy antics, wacko skits, and quick wit. He's so comfortable in his own skin now that it's excruciatingly painful to remember how cringe-worthily awkward and utterly uncomfortable he was at the beginning of the talk show. He truly is a brilliant host now, and yet completely useless in this interview. Sarah has to do all the heavy lifting here which is why the audience has to follow her lead because Conan isn't helping her or guiding them to the laughter.

Just watched her describe this clip on another clip, and she was spot on. Also, something a bit stoner-ish about some of her stylings here, which reminded me how she apparently shared an apartment with Doug Benson and someone else (Posehn, possibly) back in the 90s. This must've been before that, though. She's pretty damn cool, being all of 22 and on SNL. Already delightful, and still with so much more ahead of her. What a gal.

This was when Conan just started and he was just as bad. He was terrible with filling in words to help awkward moments and nearly lost his show cause people hated it then. He has really improved.
