The best version of this song. Ever. Next O Come All Ye Faithful and then Joyful Joyful (Live from the Evergreen Experience). You will be a happier person if you do….I promise. 😁👏🏻🔥🎶
This can only be topped by their singing Silent Night, with the beautiful Avi bringing me to tears. And I really love this one but oh my, Silent Night!
Avi's voice sounds like eating really good-quality chocolate makes me feel. 😊 That's the only way I can describe it. So glad you finally got around to reacting to this one - and yeah, pretty much everyone responds like that to Mitch's HUUUUUGE power note at the end!
Get used to being mind-blown by their Christmas songs - it's gonna keep hitting you over & over! I'm crossing my fingers for O Come All Ye Faithful next!!! I promise it is NOT what you expect!!! 😉
So hard to separate their Christmas songs, they're all so good, but for me the most surprising one is "O Come All Ye Faithful". Don't want to spoil anything, but it's a bop.
May I recommend " Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy " ( Grammy award winning ) aka " The song without words preformed by a group without instruments " AND "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen " both have a Mitch slap for you. 🥰💜🤯 Thank -you.
This is one of the few Christmas songs I like (not because PTX does a bad job, I'm just not really a Christmas music fan), along with the Grinch song, and it's just gorgeous!
I converted my youngest child to a Pentaholic last night by showing them Imagine after we were listening to one of their CDs. I suggested they watch this one and they came running out of their room "Mom! I have goosebumps and I am only half way through the video"...I told them to get used to the goosebumps, because it will happen in nearly every song they listen to.
💖 **MITCH GRASSI, IS THE RAREST OF MALE VOICES, A COUNTER TENOR, & EXQUISITE TO OUR EARS** 💖 Each singer in Pentatonix, are phenomenal vocalists, but when put together, it feels *MAGICAL* 💕💕💕
If you haven’t already, please check out some of Avi’s solo work. My current two favorites are On My Way and All is Well. And I agree with your reaction for this song; it’s spectacular.
Avi and Kevin were always roommates while Avi was with the group. Kevin had a good voice but had never learned how to use it. His major at Yale was Pre-Med as he had planned to become a Medical missionary in China. Kevin asked Avi to help him develop his voice since Avi had trained as an opera singer, and Kevin taught Avi some beatboxing skills and sounds.
Pam Avi did get that award from the ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate Acapella) for rythmn section with his group Fermata Nowhere before Pentatonix for beatboxing.
The "round" (or whatever it's really called) when everyone is singing "Mary, did you know?" in relays always sends shivers up my spine. I think this is one of the (if not the only) songs where Kevin actually sings more solo lines than Kirstie does, LOL!
PTX’s Silent Night is my absolute favorite Christmas song. I just love the way they are chilling in a cathedral leaning against the walls singing the most beautiful rendition of my favorite Christmas song. :)
They just performed at the Hollywood bowl and there are videos. The live version of the 90's dance medley is great because I wasn't sure how they were going to that arrangement live. But as always, they nailed it. YOu might want to check those out.
KUDOS Matt!!!! Would your fellow Pentaholics ever steer you wrong? NEVER! This is one of the most amazing songs. Really allows each of them to shine. And they do. Kevin is such wonderful icing on the cake. Would love to hear him featured in an entire song with everyone else doing all the backup. Crazy how 5 people can generate such intensity with their voices that it’s almost hard to take. Goes way beyond good bumps. Goes beyond simply being moved. Perhaps an ear-gasm bordering on an out of body experience in the 4th dimension? Ya, that’s close.
I've always said that Avi has the voice I'd always wished I had. (I sang bass in various choral groups from Jr. High through College, so hearing a voice that seemed like absolute bass perfection was quite a touchstone)
This happens to be one of my favorite songs by Pentatonix, the first time I’ve heard of this group was during a Christmas Special at church, it just touched my soul, the tears just poured, the lyrics to this song , wonderful, it’s not really about Mary, it’s about Jesus, as a baby, & his youth, I love your reactions to this in particular, I was waiting for it, your humble & always remind people that you are love & that’s humbling so continue to do what you do, with or without your dictionary, 😀😀😀you are loved ❤️❤️❤️, grandma approved!!!!
Ha, Mat, I love you also. I love you makeing your viewers feel all warm and cazy amd loved. Inside. I think it is amazing at how a person can love and feel love from someone they don t even know, I know that is love passed down from God as we are told to love one another as God has loved us. You are special and I feel like I have another son.
I always liken Avi's voice to warm honey flowing slowly and gently, spreading out everywhere. This is still my favourite Christmas song!! Thanks for reacting to it! And, btw...we look forward to spending time with you, too. You're a very nice human being.
This was the first Pentatonix Christmas song I heard and it secured my status as a Pentaholic. The wall of sound is mesmerizing. The live versions, both with Avi and now with Matt are glorious.
For more Kevin greatness, if you have not checked out his solo stuff, you definitely need too. His KOvers of Marion Hill’s “Down” and Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” are 2 of my faves!
This is the first song I heard from PTX and have been hooked ever since. I am partial to this one though, My favorite song ever, because it is the story of the Birth of Jesus in a personal way, asking if Mary knew the impact her Son, (God in the flesh) would have on the world. It just gives me chills! And they sang it with such grace, honor and reverence. Now that we are into the Christmas collections, would love you to react to O Come All Ye Faithful! This should be sung like this from now on! They took a Christmas Carol that we have heard over and over through the years and gave it a most delightful UPGRADE! And Carol Of The Bells is another one that is gorgeous! Well to be honest, they are all gorgeous! Thank you sir for floating down this rabbit hole! Pentaholics are DIE HARDS! Serious about PTX music! Love ya! Take ca❤re of you!
I do love this tune (and the group-shared(but-still-a-Mitch)slap (although I also got slapped first time round by Kevin actually singing (love it too!)))... And that's coming from someone who works in retail every Christmas... I think it's up there with their "Carol of the Bells" as a Christmas tune I can continue to bear! :D :) :p That said, I'm still waiting for a reactor to comment on Kirstin's back lit cave halo... I'm sure I can't be the only one who's picked up on that?!
I like the vibe too. It's solemn, reverent and haunting. The pureness of their voice's hits deep here. This makes my cry every time! I love that it left you speechless at the end. Perfect! Thank you.
This is my favorite of their Christmas songs (there are several great songs that were on their Christmas albums that aren't actually "Christmas" songs, so I'm not including those in this ranking). "O Come all ye Faithful" runs a very close second.
Matt speechless, did that really happen? Love the song, love your reaction. There are interviews with PTX team, Ben Bram - co-founder and producer, Ed Boyer - vocal producer and Ben Hausdorff - camera man, with Jacob Restituto that you might enjoy reacting to.
This is one of the few songs that you can compare and contrast with at least two other well-known a capella groups. Home Free does a lovely cover, and Voctave (which is closer to a choir, I think) did a video that includes the composer singing with them, and it's also compelling. Pentatonix, in my opinion, is just more breathtaking than the others. I don't have a religious bone in my body, but this song stirs me up.
Thanks Matt... this song is PTX Christmas gold. I'm not a religious person, but I love this arrangement, everyone shines and that wall of sound (as always) soars into the heavens, followed by the gentle floating back down to earth. But, this is only 1 of many magical PTX Christmas tracks... you really could do a Christmas song each week until Christmas and barely scratch the surface. 💜
Mary Did You Know was written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene. First hit version was by Michael English in 1991. Kathy Mattea also had a very nice version. And there've been many other covers.
This is one of their most downloaded singles year round. The original song is really well constructed to build to a climax and this PTX arrangement just intensifies that. The song is hugely popular in the US evangelical Christian community. At Christmas time you'll hear it sung in holiday concerts, often badly. My more scholarly friends, especially Catholics, would say the song is heretical, because it questions what Mary knew.
Thank you!! This gem is the song that introduced me to Pentatonix years ago, and along with "O Come All Ye Faithful" is one of my two favorite Pentatonix Christmas songs. Make sure to react to "O Come All Ye Faithful" as well....you'll love it! 😁
Mark Lowry, who co-wrote this song, does a lovely version of this song with VOCTAVE, a group you should be aware of, because they are amazing! Kirstie herself sings with them on the Disney Love Medley, which I highly suggest. After that, Voctave and their Disney Princess Medley is remarkable and lovely.
They are such masters in building the songs and have the “quiet” and the intensity on the right places. The crescendo when Mitch sings “The great I am” is absolutely divine. Thanks for another wonderful reaction 😊 Take care, and you are appreciated too 🤗
This is the first song I heard from Pentatonix and I was instantly hooked and a pentaholic. This version will always be special for me but you should also check out Voctaves version. They sing it with Mark Lowry who wrote the lyrics for this song. It is fantastic.
Was definitely waiting for you to get to this one. Absolutely spellbinding even after all these years. If you want a new reaction rabbit hole to go down, acappella ultragroup Voctave performed an *unbelievable* rendition of this song with its original writer Mark Lowry. They also have dozens of similarly unbelievable work, including a "Disney Love Medley" that has Kristin of Pentatonix!
I challenge you to have a battle with yourself by listening to the Home Free version. It is a totally different approach, but still haunting. Right upfront I have to confess a bias because Pentatonix' musical choices are not usually my cup of tea. I had never heard the song before hearing Home Free sing it and I was - and still am - totally blown away. So, I challenge you to an internal duel. And, as always, you are appreciated and loved. Have a great weekend. Edited to add: Just to be clear, I'm not asking you to pick a favorite or say which one is "better". That would be ridiculous. They are both amazing. I just think you should hear both versions. You don't even have to react to the Home Free version, although I'd be happy if you did. Happy listening!
Very powerful song. This version is amazing. I would suggest you have a look/listen to Mark Lowry singing this. Maybe not even a reaction video - but just to get the vibe of the original.
Every time I watch a reactor take this all in I love the look on their face. Everything about this is phenomenal. Everyone got to shine but this performance is all about PTX as a unit and how many ways they can blend. It is a stunning piece. I get so caught up in the emotion of it I always wish the reactor would rewind and play it again, lol. Most of the time PTX takes Christmas songs as we know them and stands them on their head, always threading enough of the original throughout to keep us familiar but experiencing it in a whole new way. I was sure this one would take you to a whole new place and level of appreciation. 💜
Hello Matts, This is one of PTXs best covers with all the key PTX elements - perfect solos, ear candy vocalizations, beat boxing and reverse swishing sounds, rising crescendos, layering and stacking the voices, voices echoing, the wall of sound, the superb videography. Mitch and the "Great I Am" hits those notes perfectly and holding it for at least six seconds and then everyone else coming in under that high note. Just astounding. Loved your reaction and commentary. More PTX please. Suggest Waltz of the Flowers for something a bit different but equally mesmerising.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, I think you'll find whatever song they do is hard to top even when comparing to last song they did. I strongly recommend their official version of O Come All Ye Faithful
"That's Christmas to me" is also soooo sweet.... you'll see them as kids in the video.
The best version of this song. Ever. Next O Come All Ye Faithful and then Joyful Joyful (Live from the Evergreen Experience). You will be a happier person if you do….I promise. 😁👏🏻🔥🎶
I love the smile that spread across your face when Kevin sings his solo.
Everytime. Every time. Goosebumps.
EVERY SINGLE TIME ❤️
FYI... the cave this is filmed in is the same one the old Batman TV show used as the Bat Cave.
This can only be topped by their singing Silent Night, with the beautiful Avi bringing me to tears. And I really love this one but oh my, Silent Night!
Pentatonix, Making Christmas, from the nightmare before Christmas. And another great reaction! 😁😁😎
I LOVE their version of that song!!!
❣❣❣❣❣
I think this may be the first song where we really heard Kevin sing.
Avi's voice sounds like eating really good-quality chocolate makes me feel. 😊 That's the only way I can describe it. So glad you finally got around to reacting to this one - and yeah, pretty much everyone responds like that to Mitch's HUUUUUGE power note at the end!
The cave is where they filmed the old Batman TV show.
This song never gets old…..❤….Judy D
Get used to being mind-blown by their Christmas songs - it's gonna keep hitting you over & over! I'm crossing my fingers for O Come All Ye Faithful next!!! I promise it is NOT what you expect!!! 😉

Obviously, my name is Mary. I was born Christmas Eve and this Song 🎵 gets me Every time. Merry Christmas Everyone.
One of my all time favorites!

One of their best christmas songs! ❤

It was the first Pentatonix video I came across. I loved it particularly Avi's eye contact.
If you haven’t already, please check out some of Avi’s solo work. My current two favorites are On My Way and All is Well.
And I agree with your reaction for this song; it’s spectacular.
This was the first PTX song I ever heard. I still get goose bumps.....
Imagine if that song was the first or second you heard, how the wonder would have hit you when listening to them.
Bro I absolutely loved your RV. You had the same reaction I had the first time I heard it. I had to play it over and over like 20 times.
Fun fact: If you listen to this song in your car and turn it up, Avi's voice is an actual physical sensation.
One thing I find interesting is when Kirstie sings, there is often a halo of light effect behind her as you'ld expect with Mary! It's fantastic!
Never get tired of hearing PTX! They are epic!

PTX’s Silent Night is my absolute favorite Christmas song. I just love the way they are chilling in a cathedral leaning against the walls singing the most beautiful rendition of my favorite Christmas song. :)
A gorgeous version! You really need to experience their live version of Silent Night. It's something else.
Now you know why it was so highly recommended.
They just performed at the Hollywood bowl and there are videos. The live version of the 90's dance medley is great because I wasn't sure how they were going to that arrangement live. But as always, they nailed it. YOu might want to check those out.
Just wall after wall of sound and layers of fantastic vocals.....fitting to the song. Special.
They are all so individually talented and when all together out of this world good.
As many times as I have seen this, it still brings tears to my eyes. I feel every note they sing in my soul.
This song and Hallelujah were the first two PTX songs I heard and made me a Pentaholic. Still 2 of my very favorites.
Ditto! And the ones I often post at Christmas in my FB page and elsewhere.
Same here. Weird.
This was so beautiful to listen to.❤
KUDOS Matt!!!! Would your fellow Pentaholics ever steer you wrong? NEVER! This is one of the most amazing songs. Really allows each of them to shine. And they do. My all time favorite Christmas Song and this is my favorite version. Every time I hear "you kiss the face of God" I get chills!
I’ve seen them do this in concert, it’s beyond gorgeous ❤️
Comparing Avi's voice to the "sounds of nature" - I can't think of anyone who would appreciate that more than Avi himself!
I've never thought of it as a Christmas song, to me it's a beautiful song I like to listen to often.
I've always said that Avi has the voice I'd always wished I had. (I sang bass in various choral groups from Jr. High through College, so hearing a voice that seemed like absolute bass perfection was quite a touchstone)

nice :) now you're going straight into the ptx Christmas music rabbit hole
"That's Christmas to me" is my personal favourite
You were walloped with the wall of sound!
IMO, this is the best cover of this song ever! Thank you for reacting to it.

Matt did u know that Avi actually studied and sang opera. His voice is very pure. Absolute love to hear him

For more of Avi’s rich chocolate voice, try listening to their version of “Coventry Carol”. It’s beautiful beyond words.
Coventry Carol is absolutely GORGEOUS.
Hope you buy that dictionary soon because we need some BIG! BIG! words to describe their talent! 😊
🇺🇸❤🇬🇧
Matt speechless, did that really happen? Love the song, love your reaction. There are interviews with PTX team, Ben Bram - co-founder and producer, Ed Boyer - vocal producer and Ben Hausdorff - camera man, with Jacob Restituto that you might enjoy reacting to.
One of my favorites! ❤
I do hear this on the radio at Christmas time. Wish they would play more of their Christmas music.
I wish they would play all of their music!
This was the first Pentatonix song I heard. It made me love them. ❤️
Bought cd minute it came out !!! Absolutely 💯 magnificent I miss Auvi, he left group to be with family 👪
Yes, I knew you'd get around to reacting to this song. Great wasn't it.

This song was actually written by Mark Lowery? Think I got his last name right. He's a Christian comedian and a member of the Gaither Vocal band
I don't know if I have ever heard the sound of ice cracking as not ominous
love you as well
If you haven't reached to Silent Night you should.
Home Free also did a cover of this song.
Homefree covers this as well
Mitch slapped, Scott suplexed, Kirstin kicked, Avi attacked, T KOd... Matt???
You have to check out coffee in bed by PTX
watch the original sometime with the guy that wrote the song and have your mind blown again
