During my naturalization application I forgot to include my traffic citation (speeding ticket amounting to $300ish). I was interviewed 3 days ago. During the interview I brought up this citation and told the officer. He said that that it is ok and didn't elaborate on it. There are also some items that I wanted to correct such as my trips. Instead of 2016 I put 2010. Officer said it is OK. The only item he updated is my middle name. I hope this helps

I passed my interview today, August 25, 2023!! I have 4 tickets between 2004 and 2013 (I got my green card in 2018). I only remember 2 of them and since they were all under $500 and no DUI/Injury, I thought I could answer NO on part 12 Question 23, and that's what I did. Then I watched this video 2 weeks before my interview and freaked out. I went to DMV website and requested my driving history record, it arrived 4 days before my interview (I requested it to be sent via email). The scary part is the record only showed all the citations I got (that's when I realized I actually have 4 tickets) but it didn't show the amount of fine and weather I paid for them or not. BTW all citations were given in Ohio, the only state I've ever lived since I came to the US in 2002, so my driving record was issued by Ohio BMV. I am not sure if other state's BMV would provide more information. OK, so I brought this record with me and as soon as the officer allowed me to talk, I said "I made a mistake on N400, I have traffic tickets". The officer cut me off and said "we will talk about it when we get there. don't worry, traffic ticket is not a big deal". And when she asked me the infamous Q23, she asked "Have you ever been arrested, cited, or detained by any law enforcement officer OTHER than traffic stop?" I said "No" and she asked "does any of your ticket involve DUI or injury?" I said "No", then she said "everyone has traffic ticket. I have 5" and gave me a smile. She didn't even ask me to show her my driving record! It's waste of $5 but I believe it's safer to have the paper with you.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
Usually, if the tickets don't involve alcohol, drug, injury or arrest and less than $500, you do not have to show proof of payments, but it doesn't mean that you should answer "No" to Question 23.
This again, depends on the officer who interviews you. Most officers don't care about traffic tickets if they don't involve any of the above. However, if the officer thinks you purposely try to lie on the application, then it's a big problem.
I am glad you are fully prepared!

This video helped me a lot, thank you so much! I literally searched for this question while I was watching videos on term definitions and this particular one stressed me out so much because I answered wrong in the form. I put in NO in my form because when you read the context of that question, it's like asking about the "major" crimes. So when this question came up, I decided to be truthful and said "No, but Officer..." then Officer cut me off saying "You got a speeding ticket?" I said yes, let me explain. He said "Don't worry about it, as long as it's paid already". So they already performed FBI background checks on you prior to your interview, but just be honest anyway, nothing to worry about those speeding tickets. I passed the interview 3 days ago.

Hi, I got my traffic tickets more than 10 years ago and less than $500. It's all speeding related and not involving DUI or injury to any person ..but the issue is I don't have any documentation with me. it's too far back and I really don't know what to do. I don't even remember how I paid for them. One was on a highway in a different state in 2007. One was in another state in 2006. And another one was in 2007 as well. No tickets after that. I am very worried.

I got (school) parking ticket, everything was resolved and I paid $20 on 2017” and the officer told me “Oh that’s not that bad”. The officer was very nice.

Thank you for your video, very helpful info. Follow up question: So if we mark yes on this question solely due to the traffic speeding ticket the did not lead to arrest, or involve alcohol, or injury, and not over $500 does this mean we also have to mark yes on questions stating "Have you EVER been charged with committing, attempting to commit, or assisting in committing a crime or offense?" and "Have you EVER been convicted of a crime or offense?"
    Thank you in advance.

Yes. You are correct. Most of the time, if the tickets are under $500, the Officer would not even ask, but we see it more and more often now that the Officer ask about it even if it's under $500. So be fully prepared and bring all supporting documents. It's not a problem to correct your answers during the interview.

But you don't need to check Yes for a parking ticket, correct?

  • @marwanjalil7574
    @marwanjalil7574 3 месяца назад

With the new update for the N-400 form, I found many people asking on various social media websites whether they should choose "Yes" or "No" for certain questions, especially question 16 if they answered "Yes" to question 15b when they mentioned their ticket (a normal traffic ticket without DUI, alcohol, or injury).
For example, I checked question 16: "If you received a suspended sentence, were placed on probation, or were paroled, have you completed your suspended sentence, probation, or parole?" This is especially confusing for people who have received speeding tickets and checked "Yes" for question 15b. When filling out the form online, if they mention their ticket in question 15b and choose "Yes," they are required to answer question 16 as well. They cannot leave it empty when filing the form online because they have to answer "Yes" or "No" to proceed to the next page. What should they choose in this case since the question does not apply to them?
When downloading the form, they don't know if they should leave it empty or choose "Yes" or "No" because they mentioned "Yes" in question 15b only for a traffic violation without alcohol or drugs, like a speeding ticket.
For online filing, I found that if you answer "No" for questions 15a and 15b, question 16 will disappear. However, if they have a speeding ticket, they must say "Yes" to question 15b.
I am now facing the same problem both online and when downloading the form because I have a speeding ticket and chose "Yes" for question 15b. I don't know what to put for question 16: "If you received a suspended sentence, were placed on probation, or were paroled, have you completed your suspended sentence, probation, or parole?" because it doesn't apply to me.
If I am filling out the form online, I have to choose "Yes" or "No" to go to the next page. If I am filling out the form manually after downloading it, I don't know if I can leave it blank. Should we leave it blank in the downloaded form if it doesn't apply to us? Is it acceptable for USCIS to leave it blank? How can people filing the form online solve this issue when they must choose either "Yes" or "No" to proceed to the next page of questions? Please help us.

I hope you can help with this scenario: A person who is going in for N400 interview in less than two weeks has never had a citation here in the U.S. However, about 30 years ago when she lived in Japan got pulled over. The officer asked if she had a drink and she said yes. He had her walk a line, then gave her back her license and let her go with no arrest or detainment. She then received a letter in the mail instructing her to pay a small fine, which she did and that was the end of it. He said that it’s okay. He didn’t want to see the documentation. they know everything and want to see what we say the truth or not.

I have found your videos very helpful and I wished I had watch these before I submitted my application end of Feb. I have green cared for 32 yrs and finally applied for citizenship, bc I didn't wan't to pay same amt to renew green card and I totally was not paying attention to citation on q23,more focus on arrests. Therefore I answered no. I do have traffic tickets with last one 2016, total I think 5 or 6 tickets in all. my question is I got a parking meter ticket day after submitting application, does that count too. The officer that conducted my interview made me change my answer in question 23 to NO, and question 24 to YES. Which is quite confusing to me, it was just a speeding ticket not involving alcohol or drugs.

I answered 'no' to question 23 when I filed online over a year ago. That question is kind of weird to me because it asks if ever been arrested or detained which I never have been. I did get a speeding ticket back in 2011 and I didn't think a traffic violation is what they were asking with the word 'cited'. So now I realized after watching your video that I should have answered yes instead. I paid the fine and got it resolved at the time. There is no way I can find the receipt from 10 years ago. I tried online and was unsuccessful. I did get my driving records history online from the TX DPS website. I have lived in the United States as a permanent resident alien for almost 38 years now, and I finally decided to apply for citizenship. Do you have to report on the application every time you were pulled over, or only if you were actually issued a ticket/citation? I’ve been pulled over several times over the years, but let go with only a warning. One time I was pulled over for speeding, but was only given a “warning“ citation without having to pay a fine. Do I need to report this citation? Plus in the year 2000 I was pulled over and issued an $8 citation for my brake lights not working. I obviously paid the fine, but since this happened almost 22 years ago I do not have a receipt or proof that I paid. Do you think this will be an issue during my interview? Thanks for your help.
