20th april 1968 British band _"Roundabouts"_ were to play at "Parkskolen" school close to our home in Taastrup, Denmark. But when they got on stage they had just decided on a new name for the band - _"Deep Purple". They played very loud so even if a couple of months before I was born, I will have sensed them. The very first Deep Purple concert ever.
A few months later we visited my grand parents in Ballerup, Denmark. Late summer, it would've been warm, windows open, and noice from the outside coming in to my small ears. This day close nearby another British band, _"the New Yardbirds",_ played a gig. But when they came on stage they had just changed their name to... _"Led Zeppelin"._
Is it any wonder that I like rock music?
I saw Deep Purple several times in the 1980's, and, even if they didn't quite have the raw energy of these early performances, they are still the most exciting band I've ever seen on stage. Somebody will probably know differently, but when Speed King was recorded I don't think anything that hard, heavy and aggressive had been captured on tape before. I think Deep Purple raised the bar for how dynamic a rock band could be. It probably gets overlooked now, but in their heyday, at least in the UK, Deep Purple were more commercially successful than Black Sabbath, and more loved and more influential among hard rock fans than Led Zeppelin.
My favourite band, and a guitarist friend has performed with Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Roger Glover. Purple always had some wonderful musicians. The break up of this lineup in '73 came about as they were so overworked by the management, so although they were making alot of money by then tensions between Gillan and Blackmore worsened and the former resigned. The band eventually went on to sell around 150 million albums, so not too shabby! Seen them about a dozen times (mainly when Steve Morse was in the band, and twice with Blackmore).
Looks Like Blackers might have broken a String on Speed King ...So that may be Why it was cut short . Powerful performance by the Lads .
Well, the song started in the middle.. it was a show where they had to fit into a time-slot, so they probably edited the first part of speed king.

I saw them several times in the early 1970s . . very exciting and very loud on stage . . superb band. Any track from 'Deep Purple in Rock' is good.
I was in 16th when I saw this video the first time and was the first time I listened deep purple too.... since that time, after 32 years... I never see a better live performance by a rock band than this.

Jeez, Zeppelin broke the Beatles record for a single gig 87, 000, at the Houston hipodrome, also Zeppelin albums totalled 300 million, Deep purple did'nt even come close. Beck, Clapton, & Page blow Blackmore away, any & every day of the week, in regards to guitar solo,s , you pick Blackmore,s best ever solo, & i guarantee that i can find 10 Page solo's, that makes it sound like an amateur, GO ?

First piece from them I heard was Super Trouper, and I was amazed bc it's so different to any other music.

Blackmore wasn't happy with the direction they were going and wanted to be a harder band and also wanted a front man with a Jim Morrison look and found Gillan and recruited him. Gillan said him and Glover were a package deal. Partly because they only had one descent pair of pants they had to share, but mainly because their writing ability. Peace

I only caught Blackmore in 1981 with Rainbow on the Difficult to Cure tour with Pat Travers as the opening act. Truly pales compared to these performances.
