To all the beginners who see this, I hope you'll remember my comment. Blender will be tough and frustrating at first. Especially after you complete this tutorial series. After you complete the series you will want to create some art, and it will most likely not be very good. That feeling can be incredibly discouraging. It can also feel horrible to not be able to do basic things without googling the solution, but trust me, it gets so much better! Accept that there is quite a learning curve and you'll be okay. Getting to the point where I could solve problems on my own was one of the most satisfying things I've done. I recommend to watch more tutorials, but make sure to not get stuck on tutorial island. After a few weeks or a month try to do your own thing, or put a cool twist on a tutorial. Have fun and good luck
Well said :)
Thanks a lot!
I really wanted to learn blender man but theres so much stuff going on and i end up learnt nothing. Month ago i started the anvil tut(i already did the donut one) but uh more and more works are coming to me. This could also be one of the prob most beginners faced and now its almost holiday and the school examination havent finish yet dammit
@@blenderguru can you make more tutorials for intermediates when you made the couch and chair tutorial I still remember it till now
I agree with you
I started my 3D quest with your original donut. 3 years later I am now paid for my 3D work. Can't wait to see your updated donut :) All respect, my friend.
Awesome!! Hope I can do the same !
That is brilliant!
Give us a link to some of your work.
So it's possible to make a living from this? Lol
@@reelseri0us629 Of course it is? Who do you think makes all the assets for the games you play, or the movies you watch?
This tutorial series has got me more into Blender and 3D CG work than the Uni/College course I quit a few years ago. After finishing this, I feel confident enough to explore and play around making my own project from scratch. Thank you!
I have completed the entire tutorial and I would like to share my experience. If you are considering doing it, this review will provide you with valuable insights. Let me provide some background information first. I am in my thirties and have a full-time job and kids, which means I can dedicate only 1-2 hours every other night to this tutorial. I have a short attention span and can easily get demotivated, so I needed a plan to stay focused.
To keep track of my progress and maintain a sense of accomplishment, I created a checklist for each Blender video. Additionally, I maintained an Excel file to record the time spent on each session and which video I was working on. This approach was ideal as it allowed me to track my progress, identify areas where I struggled, and see how much time I invested. Before starting the tutorial, I watched the entire series once, spread out over a week. This made rewatching easier as I had less need to pause and rewind the videos.
Here's a tip: I highly recommend getting a keyboard and a mouse (as Blender Guru suggests), preferably a large monitor as well. I completed the tutorial using a MacBook Pro M1, which performed admirably. However, I realized later on that switching to GPU rendering with the Apple M1 Pro (14 cores) would have improved the rendering significantly, so I recommend doing that earlier in the process.
Once I began the tutorial, I diligently logged my progress and worked through it. Here are some important lessons and tips I learned along the way:
- Don't overdo it: In my situation, I found that sessions lasting more than 2 hours were too long. If I were to do it again, I would aim for a maximum of 1.5 hours per session.
- Modeling and sculpting took up the most time: I often encountered challenges in these areas, introducing problems that I didn't know how to solve initially.
- Avoid perfectionism: As someone prone to perfectionism, I realized that it can be a significant time sink. It's better to go through the entire tutorial first and then make tweaks if necessary, especially if your goal is to finish the tutorial.
- Set goals: Establish a goal for completing the tutorial and another one for what you want to do after finishing it.
- Rewatch and redo challenging parts: I highly recommend revisiting and redoing sections that you found difficult or didn't fully understand. However, it's best to do this after completing the entire tutorial to get the most out of it.
- Get a mouse and keyboard: Using a trackpad alone is not sufficient for an optimal experience in Blender. Invest in a mouse and keyboard for better control and efficiency.
In total, I spent 12 hours and 35 minutes on the tutorial (excluding the pre-watch of the series). For the animation render, I settled on a rendering time of 14 seconds, a noise threshold of 0.0500, and maximum samples of 4096. The rendering process took a little over an hour. As mentioned earlier, I used a MacBook Pro M1 and utilized the "Metal - Apple M1 Pro (GPU - 14 cores)" setting.
You can view my final on the subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/BlenderDoughnuts/comments/14ewhdc/my_blender_donut/
P.S.: I made a minor adjustment by adding a small amount of subsurface scattering to the donut render. (I know where the door is, Blender Guru!)
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the tutorial and found it to be a valuable learning experience. It's a fantastic resource for anyone looking to enhance their skills in Blender.
This comment (and you) are awesome! I struggle to learn Blender as well because I don't have too much time on my hands and I have a hard time focusing for long periods at a time. But writing my progress down in Excel and setting goals for myself will keep me motivated and use my little time effectively. Your comment has pushed my love for Blender forward into the light and I now feel I have the strength to pull through learning this piece of software. I hope to learn Blender so that I can make 3d models for my Unreal Engine projects and games. Your comment has helped me realize what might work well for me and I'm super grateful. Thanks very much, Anton!

I haven't touched blender in a full year and promised myself I would try it again. This is a great start to get back into Blender!
If you don't know blender how tp use blender then no! Honestly Blender Guru's tutorials are not pure beginner standard. If you don't even know basics of blender then you must watch apple beginner tutorial by CG Boost or beginner tutorial by Crossmind Studios. 1st video of Crossmind is the must. Hey man it’s been 5 months hows it going with blender?
I am retired high school teacher and I created over 613 video on mostly SolidWorks. The effort you have done with these videos on Blender are truly appreciated. I respect your hard work and this is so helpful for me who has use CAD for over 40 years. I printed short cut and again this so appreciated. Hi, If you dont mind I have used solidworks a bit but now use use Fusion, would you say blender is a lot easier the same or way easier. Appreciate any feedback
As someone who has had to learn Maya as their first ever experience with 3D Modelling, I will say that so far Blender is SO MUCH EASIER. Thank you so much for this series, I'm using it to learn the basics! It's super easy to go along with.
Hiya, fellow Maya transfer. Agreed on every point.
Would you say Blender is easier than 3Ds Max
@@yourlocaldyke Defintely. There's a bit more to remember in Blender with the hot keys and stuff but in general I find it a lot more user friendly!
It certainly crashes a lot less, in my experience, lol. Maya and I had a hate/hate relationship
Do any of you think it’s possible for someone without any design background to master blender? I also I can’t draw at all. I’ve never learnt how to draw or sketch before. Would my lack of drawing skills be limiting for me when I try to learn blender?
IMPORTANT: Before you start, go to Edit -> Preferences -> System and change "Undo Steps" to the maximum (seems to be 256 for me). Otherwise, you can only undo up to 32 actions by default which means you cannot go back and redo something from too long ago.
Does this affects performance or anything ?
@@Ratozii It probably does, logically the program would have to memorize more of the previous steps and that would be tougher. There's probably a reason why the base undo limit is only up to 32, probably the better the PC, the more memory your program can handle? Otherwise, it would just lag or something.
@@feelcollins4358 the more physical memory your PC has, the more undo actions it can handle, otherwise stuff will start to get paged to disk and start to slow everything down

Very new to Blender, I've only used it for stripping out unused elements on purchased models, and reexporting so I can use in another package.
You're right about needing help immediately, some tutorials forget this, and one I saw was just a screen recording of a very fast build of something, complete with irritating music track.
This was very easy to follow - a really good pace making it simple to stop and take some notes for quick ref, and a logical, considered approach.
Thank you for taking the time to help others with something you clearly love doing.

Just started learning blender and you're the best teacher I found, gonna watch all these videos from these series! Thanks a lot and double thanks for the PDF, I was just noting down all the hotkeys that you were telling and you mentioned you have already compiled them as a PDF, awesome!
Loved it! You kept it so simple and easy to follow! And I love that you did it in chapters, which will make it easier when I inevitably need to reference them again.
Blender user since 2009. I can go 6 or 8 months sometimes without using blender, and with every release of blender, sometimes it's like driving a completely different car. I find myself returning to Andrew's tutorials over and over throughout the years to refresh what I have learned and forgotten. Thanks for being there for us Andrew!
Kind of like apple when they update their phones, the settings are all over the place and moved.
yep I used it for nearly 10 years, till around 2.8 came back after 3.2 and was like "oh fuck, I don't know how to do anything"
Just give up. You have to keep relearning stuff and that sounds like a waste of time. The fact you have to constantly keep going back to it for your whole life or 10 years of practice goes down the drain. Yeah no sounds terrible.
@@BeylL7bruh wtf is wrong with you, nobody cares about your issues dont project them on other people

Well now its 3.0 blender ..enjoy watching
This really is the only video series I need to reference for Blender. I'm still pretty much a noob to Blender. Haven't done a whole lot with it, but anytime I want to start trying a new project with it, I come back here for a refresher on the basics of navigating and editing
I cannot express my gratitude for this series enough. I'm taking notes on everything I learn and one of the more helpful things so far was the PDF. It's much easier to write down hotkeys by reading them than to skip around a video looking for them, so thank you for clearing that up for us as an audience, especially for those of us like me who have a very short memory.
All in all, this is one of the most beginner-friendly starts to a series of tutorials I've ever seen and I definitely plan on watching the rest, especially as someone who's been planning on making this into a job. Again, thank you.
A little tip for beginners, SAVE your project after each of these videos/ after each step you complete.
This saved me SO MUCH time and effort. There will be parts where you get stuck, or that you find a little bit hard. That's 100% normal and ok, nothing to get scared of if you SAVE before you mess up.
Knowing that you can literally just close the program and try again from where you liked how things worked is reassuring and helps you keep trying rather than giving up because you have so many steps to do again. Of course, doing them again may help you remember them but you use your energy on doing the same thing again and again just to get stuck at the exact same point in the process and that will only demotivate/bore you.
SAVE before you actually finish for the day. Doesn't matter if you go back and work on it the second after, the next day or later. Save the project and you'll save time, energy and motivation to keep learning.
Dang, you beat me to this suggestion, 6 months before. : )
I have a feeling you didn't save your work and it traumatized you 😂
@@JevSirSkiI learned the hard way XD

I just wanted to add a thank you for making this series. I'm a stay-at-home dad and I've been trying to find new skills to learn while I have the extra time. Describing an orthographic view as a view with a focal length of infinity... brilliant! Dude, I've been looking for a blender tutorial creator who explains stuff in a language I can understand and I finally found one, thank you!
Coming back into Blender after a long pause. This tutorial system works really well for me. Thank you again Blender Guru.
Oh damn, here we go again!
The donuts must flow!
hey boss, getting back into blender is always easier when I see you've made a new donut tutorial, I must say that every single iteration of this series you make, your teaching ability simply gets better and better, glad to see your love of teaching and blender hasn't changed after all this time :)
Thanks so much! I've been trying to get started with other tutorials and you've made starting with Blender calm, enjoyable and feels possible! Look forward to making the donut, cheers!
I came back here to refresh my knowledge in blender because you have a clean tutorial, I learned a lot from you when I was learning blender that required to learn in our school subject and now I want to use the blender again here in my work, you help a lot
You were the person that REALLY got me started with blender, and now you are remaking the tutorial that did so. Never would've got into game dev either, so I am excited as heck for this to drop, and obviously, I'm making that donut all over again!
I can only speak for myself, this is amazingly ridiculous you have provided and given away more value than the courses I've paid for, unbelievable...as simple and powerful as the pdf blender shortcut guide, plus the 9-minute walkthroughs you've provided so far.
Thank you, bless.
Which version of blender should i download
that new donut tutorial is perfect to get back into blender after a long break. I started with the old donut back then. can't wait to make more donuts!!
The video is very easy for beginners to understand and I feel very grateful to Blender Guru for making a tutorial video that is easy to understand.
Even though I started learning Blender a couple years ago now, I still watch all the new donut tutorials because I feel like there's always something new or that I didn't catch before! Keep them coming Andrew :)
I am currently starting Blender, i am very thankful that you are here to quickly teach me. Hopefully i will meet my dreams in reality, and again thank you.
Hello
www.youtube.com/@Stylizedostudio/featured
Don’t get your hopes up, millions of other people probably would do much better.
Coming back here after creative block, it totally made me forget so many things I was a mess... so I so need a refresher on everything... art animations, and even blender ui and modeling etc. @-@ So happy you made this so I can always come back to it easy, this is the most easiest tutorial playlist I have ever used! Totally love it, yes it an year outdated but it still serve its purpose.
This marks the beginning of Blender for me, wish me luck.
help I made my cube invisible
How’s it going? I have been on and for four years so I am going to start again.
Thank you for teaching hotkeys straight from the beginning.
Some tutorials avoid it to not overwhelm beginners, but I think it's just so inefficient. Feels really productive to use shortcuts for everything, Blender is a beautiful piece of software.
Yes, providing a short-cut PDF takes considerable effort and is a class act.
Oh boy this is a throw back!
For anyone new just starting out, keep on keeping on! Things will be a mess at first, errors, scapping everything and going back to the start, a lot of keys to remember, a lot of frustration but in the end is going to be WORTH IT. I still have my first donut and cup of coffee, that was a blast. Used to send the render image to friends and most of them ended up asking where did i shoot the photo cause they wanted to try out the place, it was amazing!
OH! Also, everypart is BOUND to have some comment cheering you up for making it that far! That kept me motivated a lot!
I haven’t started yet- just learned about Blender today and this has really inspired me! Can’t wait to start. Thank you!!
I don't know if Blender Guru will see this, but one of the people who worked on Everything everywhere all at once followed this tutorial to create The Everything Bagel. So to sum it up this tutorial influenced a major part of the entire plot of the movie. You've certainly made in life, Guru.
I've been following the 2nd donut tutorial these days and now there's gonna be a new one, that's perfect!
I think its great that you keep updating this series. As a hobbyiest I sometimes don't touch Blender for several months to a year and when I return I've forgotten a lot. I always come back to the donut to start off again. It's like coming home. You should update the Anvil series as well as it explores different techniques.
I was beyond WORSE than lost from the very beginning. I’m getting the impression that you have to start off with quite a bit of knowledge or experience just to understand this beginner’s tutorial. I feel like I came in the middle of a lesson and everyone else in the class already had considerable understanding of the subject he’s teaching. Perhaps I should look around RUclips and see if I can find a beginner’s tutorial to the beginner’s tutorial so maybe that will help me better understand THIS beginner’s tutorial. Watching the first minute or two of this tutorial has convinced me that I’m going to need an intro to an intro to another intro just so I can understand this level 1 beginners tutorial. Wow!!!
You need to watch this while having Justice Der - Covers [Slowed w/ Rain Sounds] playing in the background. What a relaxing learning environment. Cheers on another great beginner tutorial.
I was a complete noob to blender then i watch this tutorial. completed the entire series and did something different.my own space donut. I've been insipired by you and others and i just want to say a very big thank you. Your tutorials were so down to earth and you pratically explained 80% of blender. Thank you my friend :). This is the tutorial that just goes through everything
It was the donut that has taught me to use the blender for my first time ever doing anything in 3D. A few things I wished he spent more time at was the nodes. But after looking at others that teach Andrew takes number one. You have that special touch to teach love it. Just started blender in April 2021. Being American that metric throws me off. We measure by clicks, over younger two blocks, and just a hair to the right or left.
Thank you for this awesome intro, and for the PDF! I really appreciate your work.
Now that I've done blender on and off for a while, a tip that's helped my fingers is to get any sort of mouse that has extra side buttons. Most commonly there will be two extra buttons on the left. Then in edit -> preferences -> keymap -> 3D view -> 3D view global, you can set the rotate and pan controls to use your side mouse buttons instead of having to hold down the middle wheel over and over (which hurts my finger after a while) or even program one of the side buttons to be the middle mouse button if your mouse is able. This way, you can just hold in one of the easier to click side buttons by itself to rotate or pan the camera.
Lifesaver!
Although I already finished my donut a good while back, I honestly might just watch the new Donut tutorial just for nostalgia. It's thanks to Andrew and his tutorials that so many artists got into 3D, including myself, and I can't thank you enough for what you have done for the Blender community and 3D as a whole. Honestly, the Blender donut has become the 'hello world' of 3D artists!
3 years ago I made a donut, today I wanted to dabble my feet in Blender again. Feels good to learn from the same teacher again, this time updated too! =D
Does this vid still works with the 3.4 update?
@@user-se3kk8gn4j yes
Ive never wanted to dabble my feet so badly. Until now.

Thank you so much for this. I studied animation and we learned Maya. It's been years since I've used it, and now I've forgotten most things. However, I've ached to learn Blender for years, and now it's finally time! I knew I had to look you up, because everyone talked about your donut tutorial - even here, in the tiny country of Norway. This first part gave me so much motivation! And my God, Blender is already so much more intuitive than Maya, based on this alone. You are a godsend and I can't wait to restore my passion for 3D through Blender!
Do you know what version of blender this is?
@@michaelgoodman8849 i wanna know that too
Just downloaded Blender because I felt I needed to take up some kind of hobby. Very useful information here. I initially opened the program then immediately closed it out. It looked like so much and so intimidating. Thank you for this video and the others I'll be checking out since I saw the donut and comments about a chair/couch. I'm really excited to watch them and learn more from you.
I use a 60% keyboard though, so no number pad and I don't believe it has the tilde key either (super odd). No snapping to objects and whatnot for me, I guess, lol.
2 yeas ago I started learning Blender, Starting with your donut Course, now i think im the 1st in syria that uses blender as an architect. Thanks for you andrew !
I'm interested in seeing the course go through 3.0 and geometry nodes
So how do you just freely move the camera like in SFM? in SFM you can just hold the left mouse and use WASD to just freely fly the camera around and let go of the mouse button when you are done. Shift + ~ still requires you to left click when you're done moving to confirm the move, and you can't animate the camera in real time doing that
Also how do you change the FOV of the camera live? CTRL moves it but doesn't change the FOV
In SFM while moving the camera I can just use the mouse wheel scroll to change the FOV without having to go into any camera properties menu
@3g0st All that does is just let you pan up/down left/right but you can't fly the camera forwards or backwards while doing that
SHIFT + ` man
turn on walk/fly view, I have the toggle set to a hotkey(shift - F)

3 Months ago, I started with your tutorial and today i got my first paid commission, i cannot thank you ehnough for the help and passion you provided. and to anyone reading this, belive in yourself ^.^
I took the paid course of blender in my national language for my ease but didn't understand few things and You are my go to teacher for BLENDER now. Thank you so much.
Can’t wait to follow along with the series as you upload even though I’ve completed the previous donut and chair!
But I think the first episode would be about the basics of Blender.
Hyped up!!
ahhh feels good to be beginner again.
Feels right at home, an year ago I did this donut tutorial an year ago and honestly after I started doing blender it felt liberating. I am still a hobbiest but making art for myself kind of made me feel better about myself. Umm I don't do it enough now a days but I open blender every now and then and continue to work on old abandoned projects.
Although one tip I'll give to beginners is to be consistent unlike me, who has little to no consistency, work everyday if possible even if it was for 15 mins.
Another tip will give is don't rely on tutorials too much start making things on your own when you feel confident that you know your way around.
And don't get too much into add-ons initially, they might seem tempting to a beginner but it might end up doing more harm than good.
Blender is a great tool for whatever you wanna do in 3D/2D, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, remember it depend on the artist and not the tool.
I need to learn Blender to make some car body kit prototypes, and I feel like making a donut is a great way to learn a lot of aspects of modeling at once. You've made a great choice picking it as an example. Not to mention a great instructioal video in every aspect. Subscribing.
Thank you for this great series. I'm a total noob and with this series I already feel like I'll be able to use blender a lot better. Also thank you for the shortcuts PDF.
Thank you for learning me what's blender, Once, it was unfathomable, Now, it's like my joy source. You're one of the best blender teachers.
I love that you update the tutorials for each new version of Blender. Super helpful!
For laptop users without a mouse: instead of using the ''little gizmo'' at the top right corner of your viewport, you can also hold in both your touch pad buttons to orbit around your object.
Its all about wanting to learn how things work. Everything else will slowly come afterwards. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
This guy is a legend, making a series every new version for a donut, I just started watching the first video, and I hope I can learn how to use it decently, hope this will help me
