How To See Through A Screen As A Hockey Goalie | Hockey Goalie Tips Ep 1

  • There are 3 things to consider when you are facing a shot like this.
    Can you see the puck?
Can you do something to get a better view?
Is your defensemen there to help?
At first glance this goal might seem impossible to stop since my own defensemen redirected the shot right onto the opposing forward’s stick. However there are things you can do to greater your odds at stopping goals like this from happening.
There is a much greater chance that you will be scored on if you can not see the puck, even if it is only for a moment. That is because you will be wasting time looking for the puck rather than getting into the right position.
So you want to make sure that you do whatever you can to always keep your eyes on the puck.
In this situation, I should have leaned over to my left to look around the player in front of me while staying square to the shot. This would have given me a bit more time to readjust after the puck was redirected because I would have seen it happen rather than wondering why the puck didn’t hit me after it was shot.
Even though it was only half a second, that could have made the difference between me getting over and stopping the puck versus what actually happened.
Now 2 other things you can do to try to gain visibility is:
    1) Stand up and look over the player in front of you if they are shorter than you.
    2) Use your glove or blocker to push the player in front of you out of the way just enough to see the puck. Now this doesn’t mean punch them but use enough force to move them so you can keep your eyes on the puck. Just keep in mind that you may lose your position and no longer be squared to the puck if you are too focused on trying to move the player. If you can, always call for your defensemen to try and move the player.
So in conclusion, if you find that you are getting scored on when screened, do whatever you can to regain sight of the puck, lean or stand up if necessary and always ask a defensemen for help to clear the front of the net.

SO GLAD you’re back!! RUclips has missed you.
I’m Interested to hear what your take is on plays in the transition area from overlap to RVH. I keep getting scored on when in transition to RVH (particularly low on the blocker side). Basically, they seem to hold it when I’m in overlap, and then wait for the exact moment I bring my short side foot inside the post, and then they send it low short side.
It’s happened a few times now so they’ve obviously identified it as a weakness.
    WELCOME BACK!!

Great questions. I did a video a while ago with Nick Dahan where he was teaching me the RVH and although it has its purpose, unless you can practice snapping down very fast and in the right position, you may just want to stay in the overlap longer. It may force the player to not shoot or go below the goal line and then try a wrap around. Then you can just slide over into an RVH to prevent the wrap from going in.
The RVH is something I did not grow up with, so I try to play my strengths during games.

Two minute Tuesday! I like it!! I think it's a great edition, keep up the good work man!
As for the goal I let in a lot, someone would come on a breakaway and shoot high glove and I'd drop down and drop my glove to the side instead of just jabbing it in the air. I asked Maria Mountain about this on one of her videos and she said that in between whistles it would be beneficial to practice dropping down and keeping the glove up so your body sorta recognizes the pattern. I'm still working on it and I still fall into that habit but yeah. I think I've seen one of the videos you posted where you had somewhat of a similar habit?

I just chock those type of shots up to it being hockey and sometimes the bounces don't go my way. The guys that have so much skill that I can't keep up with I rely on my angles and the possible poke check.

Love the break downs. Keep up the good work.
as for shots that seem to keep going in on me... Blocker side corner shots... I feel like they are going to pass to the open guy in the center, I cheat just a little and the score short side. Usually squeakers... but they are crazy annoying. So maybe how to get a better seal on the post, blocker side, with still being able to feel like you can jet out to the center in you need to.

That’s a tough one. I think I have some goals against that will help with that 👍 I’ve got for cheating on a few occasions too.

If you wanted to be 100% in your case, I just think it's a lack of information from u of the opponents, because you have the three fowards in the same corner, so you should have moved to the left just one little bit, like that, you can see the puck coming better because you no longer have a screen, if the shot succeeds in reaching you, there is always your right side to block it and it does not matter if you leave a rebound on the right side the opposing forwards are on the other side and your defender is in position to recover the puck, and you would have been closer for the shot on the side. I'm not saying that your advice is bad on the contrary, and what I'm telling you are really small details, but it could help you for your next games.

I've noticed a recent issue that I don't remember having before where I will make an initial stick save on shots that come off the ice but the puck will either roll up my paddle and go in or re-directs off my paddle and in. It has been really frustrating to make that first save just for the puck to go in any way.

I've had that happen before. Once the puck was coming to me really slowly and I tried to use the front part of my stick to stop it and it ramped off of it over my head and in the net.

I was just wondering. How do you stay calm in net when your out of position and someone has a scoring opportunity? I played in net for my sledge hockey team and there’s a few times I was out of position and trying to get back as quickly as possible because I didn’t know if that guy was going to shoot or not. I just kept falling over because I was so worked up

    • @ThePuckStopsHere
      @ThePuckStopsHere  Год назад

Great question... I think the calmness comes from 2 places. 1, believing in myself to make the save even if I am out of position. 2, remembering how fun it is to make big saves and recognizing it as an opportunity to make another one.
But if you don't make the save and they score, it is okay because you tried your best and it is meant to be fun anyways.

I’ll be guarding my right post from a player behind the net. I consistently let in goals from a pass out front and a quick shot to my glove side. Should I try and push off the post to square up?
