Why Encanto is a Brilliant Masterpiece!

- In such a short amount of time, Encanto has worked its way into my heart and has become one of my favorite Disney films! But just what makes it so great? Let's sit down and figure it out together, shall we?

When I watched it with my husband, he admitted he thought Isabella was going to be a twist villain. It's like we've been conditioned to expect one. So I'm really glad this movie didn't even have a villain.
We honestly enjoyed the movie ourselves and been a very long while that Disney something good that wasn't having twist villlians left and right and try to focus on making good stories again and there are a few handful of characters we like but won't spoil who still hadn't watch the movie yet and It's not just Bruno alone.
Most Disney movies these days COULD’CE AND SHOULD’VE been more like Encanto. No sexist cash grabs (live action remakes of Disney), no squandered messages like trusting the bad guys (Ralph Breaks the Internet and Raya and the Lady Dragon, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ most recent films that make Big Hero 6 look like a Disney Renaissance film (I know RaisorBlade thinks Big Hero 6 can only be given credit where credit is due, but even on its own, I think Big Hero 6 is close to the levels of quality of any 1990s Disney Animation movie except for Pocahontas 1), just a film that is pretty much a spiritual prequel to Coco with no (forced/twist) villains (that we got in TOO MANY DISNEY MOVIES IN THE EARLY 21ST CENTURY, EVEN IN MOVIES I LOVE WHERE THE TREND STARTED LIKE TARZAN 1 AND TOY STORY 2 IN 1999!!!!!!!), musical numbers that feel like they came from the Rio movies (even though I only love the original), not just being good for memes in the veins of Nicktoons (The Wild Thornberries, SpongeBob Squarepants. Fanboy and Chum-Achim and Jimmy Neutron let alone Planet Sheen), positively and whimsically portraying South American culture, etc.
I really like how far we come in the characterizing of female characters in western animation. It not just stereotypes anymore but we are so far into it that female characters feel like their own distinct person but also that we can address aspect of toxic femininity without reducing the antagonist to a stereotype either
The real miracle is the great movies like this we saw along the way.
Encanto is absolutely one of my favorite films ever, and that's big because I am a huge animation fan. Encanto was brilliant through and through. It makes me sad how many people missed the nuance... showing that so many people can't be mature enough to understand what the movie was about!
My headcanon is that the Miracle didn’t give Mirabel a gift because it had seen the gifts hurt the other Madrigals. However, when Mirabel is treated even worse for not having a gift, it gives Antonio a gift that it doesn’t believe can be abused by Abuela, being able to talk to animals.
I love how this movie succedes where others failed. thanks for covering everything. Mirabel and Bruno are cinematic miracles and you helped highlight the best in the film. thanks. I'm definitely happy Abuela didn't kinda force Isabella into what would've been an arranged marriage which I don't like (not referencing Mulan 2) and that she wouldn't have been happy in but was willing to live through it because it was what was unfairly expected of her.
I love how the magic knew how not giving her a gift would lead to her healing the family and saving the magic. The magic never treated her any different from anyone else. It even protected her as the house was falling. It knew she was strong enough to heal the family and save the magic. It's just a brilliant movie 🎬.
I'm a bit late but I wanted to comment about how isabella's part of "we don't talk about bruno" song you can see her singing "I'm fine, I'm fine," after looking very distressed when reminded that the guy she was engaged to was coming.

The little details really do make this movie even more enjoyable. one that I found that may be an obvious one but I still like is how the triplets gifts represent heal from the past (Julieta), weather the storms (Pepa) and look towards the future (Bruno).
Encanto is so brilliant! I really love John Leguizamo’s performance in the film! Top notch it is.
Ironically, a day after I watched Encanto for the first time, my pet fish did die-

I hope that everyone eventually remembers this movie and eventually realize that modern Disney DOES have some good in it. I mean it's understandable that people believe Disney is a bad company, but I think some people just forget that they at least make SOME good movies in recent years.
Love your analysis. Abuela also shows contempt for Pepa, I feel - or at minimum infantilises her. She's a 50 year old woman with three children (and anxiety disorder) and Alma tries to discipline her emotions like a child.
I was confused at 4:02 because I was like "That's an actual scene from the show? Because I could have sworn the animation style was different." until I saw what you were doing.
I was worried that Encanto would be a bit like Frozen in how it was a huge hit and while people including I still enjoy it, we found flaws upon repeated viewings. Over one year later though, this is still my favorite film ever. This film is a miracle itself. I’ll never forget when me, my mom and best friend went to go see it in theaters and we came out amazed and couldn’t stop taking about it. I honestly refuse to believe Encanto came from Disney with how it is nowadays lol.

Encanto is a great and fantastic Movie and it's one of the best ones in 2021,it try something that Frozen 2,Raya and the Last Dragon,and all of the Live Action Disney Remakes failed to do,to tell a well written Story with good Songs and relatable and impactful Characters that's extremely deep and emotional,I'm only hope is that it doesn't get the Frozen Treatment of milking it Dry,but only time will tellall in all Encanto is a Masterpiece and a 10 out of 10.
Oh I almost forgot, Marabelle is literally the miracle the grandmother prayed for to save the magic. She even said it to her. The prey was foreshadowing that she was the miracle.

The best & most unexpected thing about Encanto is that there is no *villain* here. It's surprising, yet relieving the writers didn't go there.

Encanto - One of Disney’s best. 💯💯
Just a very thin argument for the dragon (I swear you literally just said her name in the vid and I don’t remember it). Otters and seals have fur. Very sleek fur. So. There.
But ever since I saw her original concept art I CRIED. we almost had one of the most unique Lung dragons in animation history. But we got a MLP stuffed animal… screw you marketing. Screw you. I’d have flipped my shit over the og design as a little girl.
If wasn't for you (and my sister who also like this movie), I probably wouldn't have given this movie a chance. Encanto will go down in history as The Shawshank Redemption of Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Its also been theorized that Mirabel didnt get a gift because she was the next ‘keeper’ of the miracle. Her glasses and name (‘mira’ meaning ‘to see’) are a subtle way of showing her different view of the family. Since she doesnt have a gift, she’s able to see the rest of her family as who they are without their gifts. Thats why she seems to have a closer connection to the casita like Abuela does, since she’s the next in line to watch over the miracle. Which imo is super clever. Even the house breaking only to be rebuilt by them all, then the magic being brought back by Mirabel in a parallel to the scene where she didnt get a gift is really nice. Just a lovely movie overall 👌

I have to disagree with you on this one. I found it just OK. Definitely not a masterpiece in my eyes, mostly because I found most of the characters very unlikable, and aside from a couple songs, I didn't like the soundtrack, and the ending felt messy. It is better than Raya and Frozen though
I don't know why but I never saw anything special about this movie. I instantly shoved it away along with Raya and other recent Disney animated movies. Felt like the whole movie was an introduction and I was waiting for it to start and it just ended. Coco is just infinitely better.
I have my inner demons but I'll try to keep this comment as respectful as possible.
I will allow the Raya And The Last Dragon slander because at this point I made peace with the fact that I can't stop it. I'm the only person on this planet who actually still likes that movie (despite its... MAJOR flaws), and that is a small hill that I'm still more than willing to die on. But with me being so forgiving, surely you must understand that there is one thing I cannot let slide. Dissing on Sisu's design makes my blood boil. I mean, she has a unicorn horn, a fluffy mane, scales of the finest shade of blue and I read that she was based on a Naga, one of my favourite mythical creatures. You may say that I'm being biased, and you're probably right. But at the end of the day, I still recognise and acknowledge the movie's flaws. It could have been a lot better, it should have been a lot better, it should get a sequel or a series so that it has a chance at redeeming itself. But this one character. This serpentine, blue coloured, eastern water dragon, voiced by a former rapper who the internet declared the kiss of death in kids movies... I just can't bring myself to hate it. I don't know what it is. I'm not going to look down on people who find her annoying... but I just don't see it. I could go on and on about why I personally don't think Raya And The Last Dragon is as bad as people say, but a RUclips comment isn't big enough for it. Once I learn how to properly make Review videos, I'll talk it out to my heart's content. Until then, just know that I respect your opinion.
But counter point: Otters are aquatic creatures, and they have fur. Beavers are aquatic creatures, and they have fur. Seals are aquatic creatures, and they have fur. Jaguars, Polar Bears, Moose, they're all excellent swimmers, and they have fur.
Like when they kept bringing up that the town depended on them and their gifts and abuela never even saw that as a bad thing which made them all even more fragile has that huge weight of protecting the people and their family.
Encanto has an emotional story to be appreciated if you can sit through the songs.
Big Hero 6 is one of my favorite Walt Disney films for its emotional core.
Raya and the Last Dragon was better upon second viewing, but I don't like water dragons in general, and I didn't like Sisu in particular.
Chicken Little both amused and entertained me.

If there's one thing I want from a TV show of encanto I want to see what their rooms look like that is a lot of potential for a big imagination and it looks awesome especially once we actually did got to see like what's his name little boys room was so cool like please Disney if you make that TV show do that for me and for this guy right here I don't know

I don’t like the ending cause they get their powers back ruining them message of the movie and it should have been “if your nothing without your powers then you don’t deserve them” over all it’s enjoyable with the music.
Well sure is a good movie, but no master piece. Also the english voices suck, 100% better in español. I'm Mexican BTW.

I will elaborate:
- The movie doesn't explain why the family of Pepa has it easy, I mean, none of them has a specific responsibility to do something. - Dolores hints in the song "don't talk about Bruno" and later says she knew all along about Bruno, but3 minutes later it is established that she CAN NOT keep a secret. - The timeline is kind of wonky, Mirabell no being granted a "gift" is treated like something that happened not a long time ago, but the physical appearance of Mirabelle suggests otherwise, making the hiding Bruno even harder. - The son of Bruno before the town arrives flat out sucks. - The "casita" falls down because "abuela" only sees her family as "gifts" not as persons, but in the movie just establishes hardships for Mirabelle sisters and mother, and Bruno being an outcast, even before he "escapes", I mean, you can explain this by a certain family dynamic that latino families have but is not explained in the movie. - The voice cast in english is god awful, seriously, every voice sounds just wrong, more if you take into account the ages of the characters, and in the songs it is even worse.
- Abuela is clearly not striving for perfection, because Pepa, she's just an ass, and then she's not, just like a regular abuela.
- Fun Fact: Pepa in various latino countries means " female parts", and in most places is used like a joke nickname.
- The song “las Dos Oruguitas” it’s about growth inside and outside, it’s pretty vague if I’m being honest.
- Yes, the ending is a ripoff of Kung Fu Panda, same point, same results, besides that it is a good ending.
- Don't make excuses, enjoy.
It can be assumed that the Bruno we see behind Dolores and Mirabel is actually Camilo. He has glowing eyes and his cloak held high. We know his eyes only glow during visions, and it’s definitely more of a “Bruno” that Camilo envisions.
Honestly, I don’t believe this film could have been good without Lin Manuel’s co tribulations. He continues to prove that he is an absolute musical genius. He combines music with the plot extremely will. Just look at Moana. Another amazing film both character wise and music wise. He has a way of writing plot in his music without literally stating what’s happening..and it works.
