Io l’avevo sentito dire ma non ascoltato,ma adesso l’ascolto sempre, una delle più’belle voci che abbiamo avuto, resta la sua voce chiara bella e all’italiana ❤❤❤
There may be larger baritone voices, but his free open sound, thrilling high notes, perfectly placed, combined with impeccable diction, phrasing and interpretation, in my opinion, is unmatched.
Who are the listening too? He had a large voice...but wasn't known for his ringing high notes....but his uniquely beautiful timbre. Maybe not as big as guelfi, Warren or Macneil but still big voice. Other baritones had easier high notes. The aforementioned, protti, cappucilli, Bechi et cetera.

By all reports he was a kind and humble human being. Best friends with Corelli. It makes the cancer even more tragic, if possible, that a good and handsome and humble had to die that. People who knew him said he had a troubled soul but maybe that’s where the artistry came from.

I really think that Bastianini is a better baritone for Lyric operas than Dmitri Hvorostovsky, whom I love. This top notes are better, but I don't know about his acting.
It's crazy because Dmitri had one of the best voices in the last decades in opera, but imo he was no match for Ettore. Bastianini's voice was much more free and his technique was perfect as it can be.
@@definitelynosebreather DH always impressed, but I always found the voice to be somewhat manufactured or created. Did not sound natural like Bastianini, Warren, Merrill, MacNeill or Zancanaro. These are the baritones I’ll go to for authentic Italianate tone. DH tone was like Dieskau or Wixell, in that regard.
@@definitelynosebreather and Bastianini’s phrasing and diction were superlative and nobody could equal him in those departments. I remember Hvorostovsky saying in an interview early in his career that he admired Bastianini immensely and modelled himself on his style and performances accordingly, however in his later years he adopted the more modern singing style with a more covered sound which in my opinion detracted from his performances. I don’t know why he did it but his earlier performances were much better, much cleaner and much more velvety, with a much better phrasing and legato.
@@Ariadne7710 Hvorostovsky manufactured a lot of his darkness, perhaps to sound more like Bastianini, and perhaps too because he wanted to be a Verdi singer. The problem was that even if there might have been some superficial similarities in timbre, Hvorostovsky had a lyric voice, whereas Bastianini had a dramatic voice. The ironic thing is that Hvorostovsky probably made his voice smaller by trying to make it darker and more dramatic. He sounded impressive on records, but had major audibility problems live. Really muffled. I heard him live a few times with Sondra Radvanovsky, and she absolutely swamped him during their duets. This is not to deny his obvious talent and assets.
