Wonderful singing and characterisation. Callas was the ultimate. One oddity here, she launches straight into “Ah dite” from “per lei sara”, so suddenly. This is the turning point to the whole drama, and she continues it in about a second without a pause. I would have loved to see how she manages this huge character decision in such a short time - she was of course legendary for her acting alongside her epoch beating singing

A great Callas performance & maybe the best document of her Violetta available. Bastianini is in his early prime & Di Stefano is on his best behavior. He sings well & with some musicality. Shortly thereafter, however his best years were becoming an unfortunate reality.
I'm always amazed when those are ready to criticize instead of glorious praise of heavenly voices in their early primes!

Infatti. La Traviata della leggenda.
La morbidezza e il timbro di Bastianini sono una delizia per l’udito. La voce di Bastianini era come un fiume in piena che ti travolgeva… un critico, che di danni ne ha fatti parecchi, sostiene che il canto di Bastianini non é educato, addirittura arrivando a preferirgli Dieskau nel Don Carlo. Di fesserie ne ho sentite, lette tante, ma una cosa del genere é d ricovero immediato.
Sono totalmente d'accordo con lei. Il mio primo "Don Carlo" in disco è stata la splendida edizione diretta da Solti con Bergonzi, Renata Tebaldi e Ghiaurov. Il punto debole di quell'edizione è, a mio parere, proprio Il Rodrigo di Fischer Dieskau, che non è un baritono verdiano. Stesso discorso per la sua interpretazione de Il balen del suo sorriso, osannata da alcuni critici e , ritengo, imparagonabile rispetto a quella di Bastianini.
@@luisellafranchini5434 Dieskau e l’opera italiana erano due antipodi. Grande interprete della musica mozartiana, liederistica, ma non aveva il timbro per cantare Verdi, o Puccini
@@occhioverde71 Infatti, Il canto di elezione di Fischer Dieskau erano i lieder di Schubert, non certo la lirica verdiana.
Credo che i critici nei ari campi siano quelli che non sapendo fare nulla fanno i "CRITICI"

Two great singers,I would also recommend Virginia zeani and nicolai herlea singing this,it’s every bit as good maybe even better
Of course, Virginia has much prettier and famine voice, love so much and it fits this role/style. I remembered that she sang unbelievable almost 700 times. While today's "stars" are jumping around all kinds of unfit roles to build up their resume and ruins many great operas. Zeani is a shining example to stick to basis.
Callas sings full chest like a man(compliment), she can conquer all roles.
Callas and Bastianini are unrivalled in this performance, both are in their prime
