And that's a wrap on the muppets for now on the channel! I will be trying to watch the Muppets Christmas Carol on Christmas but for now, this is the end! And what an ending as well. Seeing the wedding, all the muppets, it all felt like a whole send off to Jim Henson himself.
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

This was the end, for almost a decade, for my childhood, and a nice ending to the series. I saw these original three in theaters, and I must say I think they are underrated as a film trilogy. After the Jim Henson era they do not feel the same to me so I am satisfied with just these three (and of course the original Muppet Show on TV!)

  • @ericjanssen394

Yes, Jim Henson in 1984 WANTED this to be the “ending” for Kermit & co.: He felt the Show characters were holding him back, and wanted Labyrinth to sell the new Creature Shop FX department, so he brought in the Muppet Babies to continue the characters on Saturday morning, and wrote the Endgame plot for the Show-verse. Unfortunately, Labyrinth’s box office spoiled plans, so Kermit was soon going around afterwards saying “Oh, well, all that wedding stuff was just a movie, y’know…. 🐸”

    • @RyanPeterson23
      @RyanPeterson23 Год назад +4

Yeah, the Kermit/Piggy wedding is similar to the Mickey/Minnie relationship. The official position is that they are actors putting on a production and they are not married. But if you're that invested in a puppet relationship (or cartoon relationship in the case of Mickey and Minnie) maybe it doesn't really matter to you what the "official" position is.

    • @RyanPeterson23
      @RyanPeterson23 Год назад +1

Actually, to clarify, I meant to say similar in concept, in that they're actors, but opposite regarding marital status, as Mickey and Minnie are considered married in "real life."

@@RyanPeterson23interestingly, the voice actors who voiced Mickey and Minnie from the 1980s until the 2000s, Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, were married from 1991 until Allwine's death in 2009.

The original Muppet Babies, can't believe I have to point out this because of some remakes, it was a very successful Saturday morning cartoon, it lasted like 8 years. It was a very interesting cartoon because it inserts scenes from movies into the show and the characters will play act in those worlds, like the original Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark even TV shows like Beauty & the Beast, so you get a time-capsule of what was popular from around the mid-'80s to the early '90s.

"I'm staying! You hear that, New York? THE FROG IS STAYING!"
Fun Fact: First appearance of the Muppet Babies (1984) characters, whose cartoon premiered two months after the film's release.
Legendary Sardi's Fact: The portrait of Kermit in his producer's disguise has become a permanent fixture at the real Sardi's and can be seen in other movies filmed there after this movie.
Star Trek Connection Fact: Film debut of Gates McFadden, playing Mr. Price's secretary. McFadden worked with Jim Henson as a choreographer and puppeteer on The Dark Crystal (1982) and Labyrinth (1986), but is best known as Dr. Beverly Crusher of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).
Hot Take Fact: After several less-than-satisfying takes of the scene between Joan Rivers and Miss Piggy, director/performer Frank Oz sent a stagehand to get him and Rivers two gin & tonics a piece. The two chatted and imbibed their drinks before filming one more take, which appears in the final film.

For me this is THE quintessential Muppet movie. I connect to the grounded tone, humor, and songs more than the other Muppet movies. Scaling it down to Kermit and a waitress trying to sell his script only make moments like an entire church full of Muppets even more epic. And the Muppet Babies sequence is just icing on the cake. Best Muppet movie!

Fun fact: the "saying goodbye" song got the #11 song on the Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 Saddest Nostalgic Moments list.
To be fair, that might not sound that great an achievement, but keep in mind that that list also contains death scenes, such as those of Little Foot's mom, Bambi's mom, Mufasa, Mr. Spock and Charlotte the spider, so that's pretty impressive.

Elliott Gould (the police officer you recognized) had a cameo in both this movie and The Muppet Movie (He was the beauty pageant host at the fair).
The customer Rizzo asked if she'd consider inter-species dating was Brooke Shields, famous actress and Calvin Klein jeans model.
The scam artist producer was Dabney Coleman who was BIG in the 80's starring in top notch films (9 to 5, Tootsie, Wargames, Cloak & Dagger, The Man With One Red Shoe) ...usually as kind of a slimenall like he was here...but not always.
The guy in the park that Piggy "borrowed" the roller skates from was Greggory Hines, famous actor and fantastic dancer!
The person who dropped of "Shnookums" at the kennel with Rowlf was Jamss Coco, famous actor/singer/performer.
Kermit'' doctor in the hospital was Linda Lavin, famous actress and singer best known for starring as Alice in the long running sitcom of the same name.
The make-up lady with Piggy was Joan Rivers, famous comedian/actress/talk show host.
The lady who Kermit removed her picture of at Spagos was Liza Minelli, famous actress, singer, and the daughter of Judy Garland (Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz).
When Gonzo asked the mayor if he had seen a frog that could sing and dance, that was Ed Koch, the actually mayor of NYC at that time.
At the wedding scene, you see one Muppet with a bushy mustache in a Panama Hat and khakis...that's Uncle Traveling Matt from Fraggle Rock. Fraggle Rock was Jim Henson's newest Muppet series and was just getting started at this time. Fraggles never leave their home of Fraggle Rock, an underworld system of caves and tunnels. Except for Uncle Traveling Matt, who got the itch to explore "Outer Space" (our world). So by having Matt there at the wedding the Fraggles got represented in this movie but they also kept continuity with the series. ☺

This is one of my favorite Muppet movies; next to the first, it was the end of an amazing trilogy of Muppet movies. Muppet Caper was too much of a meta comedy; playing up the meta comedy of the first, but went way over board, for me. I love this one; because it was more of a story; the songs were awesome, and the Muppets were characters in this one, verses being themselves in the first movie. I also found the comedy far better than the second.
The Muppet Babies was the hardest part of this movie; Jim Henson himself, stated how difficult it was to film the babies. One of the reasons why they made a animated series out of the popularity of the babies. Muppet Babies ran for 2 seasons, and in syndication after. A great animated show. I think it's funny; you didn't like the Muppet Babies song, as it was one of the most popular parts of the movie for most, again inspiring a TV series

I know you’ve said you’re not reacting to anymore Muppets until Christmas, but it would have been cool to see a reaction to ‘The Muppets: A Celebration of 30 Years’, which, as the title suggests, the Muppets celebrating 30 years of Kermit and Jim Henson’s work.

3:50 You didn't recognize Dr. Crusher!!!
Gates McFadden in a cameo before she became someone who'd be a cameo in a movie like this, uh... something like that... 😕
Please consider watching the "Stars of Star Wars" episode of the Muppet Show!!! 🙏
Also, I highly highly, highly Little Shop of Horrors, another Frank Oz film and he was the perfect choice to direct this movie!
    It's a musical...actually it's a feature film musical based on the Broadway musical, that was based on a 50's Sci-Fi B-movie that wasn't a musical...
Another HUGE amount of cameos in this, and this time you'll recognize a whole lot more!
(Please, nobody spoil who they are 🙏)
    Other great Frank Oz films:
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Steve Martin)
    Housesitter (With Steve Martin)
    Bowfinger (With Steve Martin)
What About Bob? (With Bill Murray)
The Score (With Robert DeNiro, Edward Norton, and in his final movie...Marlon Brando!!!)
Here's to the lovers, the dreamers, and you!
    Best Regards!!!

I remember when this movie came out I bugged my parents and older cousins to take me. I really wanted to go to the cinema to see it. And thankfully one of my older cousins wanted to see it, too, so she was the one I got to go see it with. McDonald’s in the US had stuffed toys of the Muppets baby forms for sale. My parents bought me the Fozzie one. I still have it! This film was followed by the Saturday morning cartoon Muppet Babies which came on CBS really early on Saturday mornings. I woke up early each Saturday to watch it! “When your room looks kinda weird and you wish that you weren’t there. Just close your eyes and make-believe and you can be anywhere….” Yeah I still know the theme song to Muppet Babies all these years later! It was also at this time that there was lots of Muppet stuff to buy. I had a Kermit the Frog toothbrush, Kermit the Frog bathroom cup, Kermit the Frog toothpaste most of the time although sometimes I had Fozzie the Bear toothpaste it just depended on what was in stores…I had Miss Piggy toothpaste once but I didn’t like the taste which was supposed to be bubblegum flavor but I didn’t think it tasted very bubblegum-ish, etc. I mean, between Muppets, Garfield, Disney, Carebears, and Star Wars themed stuff (blankets, cups, plates, toothbrushes, towels, shirts, etc) that’s basically my early childhood! My favorite Muppet Movie is Muppet Treasure Island, but I think that’s because it was released not long after I literally finished reading it in school so I think that made me biased towards it. If they made another film based on a favorite book of mine I’m pretty sure I’d claim that as my favorite Muppet film. And since it’s the Muppets I’m fine with it having changes that fits the Muppets style. I’ll admit that The Muppet Christmas Carol is definitely my favorite film version of that story (although A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong by the Mischief Theater group…or more precisely the fictional Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society is a close second favorite version of the story which I can thank friends from the UK to introducing me to it and some of their other works).
It’s been a long while since I have watched The Muppet Show, so I don’t remember if it was ever meta or broke the 4th wall. It’s on Disney+ so I might go watch some of it again. I remember that my favorite skits were the Pigs In Space skits as a kid and anything the Swedish Chef was doing. In the Muppets Now show on Disney+ the Swedish Chef’s skit and the Dr Honeydew and Beaker skit are my favorite parts of each episode….though the other skits are hilarious, too in each episode.
I completely agree about Rainbow Connection. I think that song is so popular and sticks with people because it’s not a song that feels exclusively for that film whereas the other songs in the first film and the other films definitely feel like they’re very much for the movie they’re in. Rainbow Connection is a song that you don’t need to have seen the film to enjoy because the song doesn’t need any greater context to understand the meaning. Seeing the movie helps give even more context, but the song stands on its own. The other songs in the films are like songs in a musical whereby they help move the story forward and so on.
Great reaction and commentary! I think ending your Muppets film journey here is a logical point. And I have seen the Muppets from Space film, but I don’t remember much of it so I’m not upset if you aren’t going to watch it. Though I might rewatch it on my own. It came out my freshman year of college and there was lots of things happening in my life at the time with family, school, and my job and some friends had like weekly movie nights and it was one of the films we watched, but with so much happening I don’t remember much about the film and that was the only time I watched it. I’ve definitely seen the others multiple times: in theaters, on television, or renting/streaming them so my niece could see them.

I also very much recommend that you watch "The Muppets" and "The Muppets: Most Wanted" movies that came out more recently. They (IMO) truly do justice to the classics, and I enjoy them equally, for different reasons. You also would much more likely recognize most of the celebrity cameos in the newer ones, which might add to your enjoyment on some level.

Even though Henson lived another 6 years after this movie, it really did feel like a finality to Henson's muppets. He did do another Muppet show after this, but it wasn't well-received, and was short-lived. I always had the impression that he was a bit tired of the Muppets in this form, and wanted to do something different. After his death, Disney bought the Muppets, and they leaned heavily into the nostalgia with traditional Muppet ventures.

We were upset about Michael Eisner at Disney trying to "buy" the Muppets in '90, but truth was, the sale was Jim's idea, for pretty much the exact same reason that George Lucas wanted to sell Star Wars to Disney and retire from the whole thing.

This is my least favorite of the original three Muppet movies, which is not to say that I dislike it. I mean, it's sweet and funny, but at the same time, the tone feels a little too serious and melancholy. After The Muppet Movie, I didn't need to see another story about Kermit and friends trying to break into showbiz. Even as a kid, I think I questioned the logistics behind their Broadway show. Does it even have a plot? How could they just add a bunch of new people with no experience at the literal last minute? What happens to the audience at the end? Also, two weeks is clearly not enough time to put on a production like that; I don't know why they couldn't have had Kermit go missing for a couple months. Oh, and while I don't know how old the characters are supposed to be, I think I had a hard time buying them as being fresh out of college. I always was a big fan of the Muppet Babies sequence, however.

You should check out the 1980 movie 9 to 5? The actor who's character tried to steal money from the muppets plays a real jerk in that movie as well.
