There's a joke about Italian driving: In Milan, traffic lights are the law. In Rome, traffic lights are a polite suggestion. In Naples, traffic lights are Christmas decorations.
I live in a small province in the north of Italy and we don't have T-lights. We have just roundabout. And i mean that in 5km i can pass across from 10 to 20 rounds. There are places where you don't have ebough space to built a round so they just punt a freaking signal in the middle of the road, and cars have to turn around a freaking pole in the middle. I hate roads, i hate cars

Driving in India is literally sudden death. People, animals, cars, trucks, bicycles, motorbikes, etc. coming from every direction at the same fucking time. I truly believe that a person who has driven in India, can drive anywhere in the world with ease.
@@divyanshkaushal1546 i have visited melbourne, i can't drive there just from sheer annoyance of how much rule it has Different life for different place Last time i visit tokyo, i can see how much of a PITA is tokyo traffic rules, you better of getting moped license or just walk On rural areas though, all rural areas are pleasure to ride, unless you are in mountains with tight roads
I was really surprised. They don't plan their talking points, for a *2 hour convo* ? How do they keep flowing? Well, I guess having 3 people instead of 2 might help. They also said that they're always talking irl as the do on the podcast which makes it natural for them so whatever.
When I was in Vietnam, my tour guide made a remark to our group "Please dont cross the street. I know there's traffic lights there but it's just there for decoration". We all laughed but the scary thing is he actually kind of wasn't kidding. lol
My partner is Thai. So many of her cousins died in motorcycle accidents. Having been there a few times I can see why. And growing up in Wales yeah there’s some beautiful but terrible roads there.
Joey's description of Akira in simpler terms: You can recommend akira to someone who doesn't watch anime and still be confident they'll enjoy it. You usually need to ease someone into anime before you start recommending some textbook anime- you won't just tell someone to watch berserk for example- but akira is almost just an ordinary movie suggestion.
Garnt's segment about SE-Asian traffic rules are so true that they make European and American roads seem like paradise. If you can drive in India for a day, you can drive anywhere in the world.
Gotta consider how old we were when we decided we liked these characters though. Idve been like 9 for Asuka, and 3 when I decided I liked Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo, despite not really knowing what love was back then.
When they talked about "really sad anime", I'm surprised nobody mentioned things like Grave of the Fireflies or Five Centimeters Per Second, which I thought were infamous for how extremely sad they are.
5 Centimeter Per Second is really something else. Its okay but i dont think its on par with Kimi No Nawa or Koe No Katachi. But the story is really depressing. I love how they twisted the plot and broke our expectations. Spoilers alert They made the guy depressed because the girl she likes engaged with someone else (iirc i might be wrong) but i think its kinda boring tbh. I give it 7/10 at most.
Grave of the fireflies was kinda mid. I liked the atmosphere and setting but everything else was like 4/10. I also want to dropkick the filthy loud child
@@jeppyjep it's not about her getting engaged with someone else, he didn't even know what she up to they both lost contact, the girl trying to move on but the boy still can't get over his feeling for her

I'm like Garnt in that I have the emotions of a rock most of the time, but scenes like that always strike something in me. Not always enough to cry, but I definitely feel it. There are some times, however, that it does hit me hard enough to shed some tears. My favorite song of all time, which isn't from any anime or cartoon or anything; just the song by itself, is Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World". There's something about the lyrics that is universal and timeless, and the way he sings it is like he's singing to us presently. I think it's the studio recording version I like better than the film recording of him singing. The next favorite I have is "Over the Rainbow" being sung by the Hawaiian guy IZ. Just that little ukulele and how much soul he puts into that is beautiful to me. I always prefer it over the original. I think he also sung WaWW, too, and I really like that as well.
For a good cry: "A Silent Voice" and "Violet Evergaden" for some good crys. The episode with the little girl and her mother writing letters to her. I had to stop so many times.

The thing about watching weekly anime is that if there's a cliffhanger and you have to wait a week for the delivery and it just hits harder than if you just binge it.
For me it's the opposite. I can't maintain that hype for a whole week. It's even worse with manga, where there's sometimes a month between chapters. By that point I start forgetting what even happened last chapter
@@darkdude1996ify ah, i guess it depends how good the show is. Sometimes i do forget what day of the week an anime airs and when I see it aired I get a little happy surprise. I do understand the manga part.
@@ethanrepublic I feel you. I think for some anime the anticipation builds up over time when you're left in a cliffhanger, whereas with binging imo I don't get time to process it all that quickly between episodes so there's not as much of a hype! That's just me tho, I totally get why some people feel the opposite
that's what I loved when I watch Astra Lost in Space and ID:INVADED when they came out. The first one a cliff hanger on every episode and ends well in the end. ID:INVADED anime has original plot (premise to the manga) so guessing and discussing the plot in the discussion board is very entertaining
@@renzdavid6731 but then, now we don't know if Yaemori or Sumi is Garnt's new best girl. he just talked about what if rent a gf had tons of chapters like one piece.
It's ironic how his movies always, ALWAYS feature perfect and loving families where they all work together to overcome odds and yet he was an absent deadbeat shit parent.
@@Falxifer95 I felt bad for his children, they must have at least a very skeptical outlook on family life. My parents fought a lot and I already have doubts on marriage, let alone having a deadbeat dad go on creating those perfect and loving families on screen.
@@fonsineknshr to paraphrase a slogan from activists where I live "family will be desired or it won't happen". Which is pretty obvious, don't bring kids to this world if you won't take care of them.
@Conrad Kujur if that wasn't bad enough there's old 2002 interview where Miyazaki said that to write and animate children he gets inspiration from his friends' children and memories of his childhood. So, yeah.
> I start the video. > Full volume on speakers > Expecting greatness > Immediately I and everyone in 100km radius gets blasted with a quest of "Have you ever Cry Wanked" > Reputation ruined
Honestly, the Akira movie isn't even that good. God tier animation and Sountrack tho. The manga is pretty good although Tetsuo was personally the only character that stood out to me
You know, with the whole “watching weekly” discussion, I actually prefer and enjoy a series more when I watch the entire thing in one sitting. It’s probably to do with my attention span (probably not the right words, but I can’t think of better ones atm) where after finishing the latest episode, if I have to wait a week for the next one, I find that I tend to gradually lose interest in it over the upcoming days. But if I watch a series in one sitting, I keep my “hype” and can satisfy it right then and there cuz the next episode is just a couple clicks away.
I find that if I consume media too quickly, I like it for three days and then I forget about it. But if it keeps me a company for half a year? I'll remember it. Though, sure, I won't be as excited about it during that time as I were if I watched it in one sitting. Which is plus for people around me I suppose.
My problem with anime is that most of it is adapted from manga. If there weren't any threats of manga readers spoiling things , watching weekly is preferred because it promotes discussion
I cant imagine watching anime without doing somewhat of a marathon. I binged Bunny girl senpai and I loved it. Then I picked up and put down part 5 of JoJo and it wasn’t as exciting.
Completely agree, I find once I stop watching something because of sleep, I wake up the next day with less inclination to continue watching if I'm not feeling the vibe or am invested in the characters. I'll eventually get around to binging the rest of it but it's just like Connor said there's a switch and initial friction I have to go through to sit myself down and watch anime.
They got the Sakamoto scene backwards - he was dancing around a fire to generate air currents to put it out, rather than trying to start a fire with foot friction. But knowing Sakamoto, the latter isn't out of place.
Hayao Miyazaki’s son was an architect and was scouted as an animation director straight away even though he had no experience because his dad was a famous director so then Miyazaki said that his son shouldn’t have taken the job and refused to help him during the process and so tales from earthsea supposedly sucks and then the whole thing with the premier happened but afterwards they worked on ponyo together and that apparently was Miyazaki’s apology to his son for being a shit father
This conflict screwed over Le Guin (who’s still really underrated despite having tremendous influence on the fantasy genre because her work has still has yet to be faithfully adapted) she was promised a lot and then Goro took over the project and the promises were broken and the all black cast was whitewashed a second time in an animated film no less.
@@keegszzz8356 I remember I read Tales from the Eathsea when I was younger and was REALLY into youth fantasy stories like Wheel of Time, Belgariad and Inheritance Cycle. I really liked the early parts but at some point I dropped it because it got way too "feminist". Take this with grain of salt as it has been like 15 years since I read it.
@@MrKeinanen first off Wheel of Time is youth fantasy? I know there was a YA attempt, but having read most of it myself it certainly doesn’t feel like that. There’s enough violence, politics, and even sex at times to satisfy a Game of Thrones fan (in my opinion). Second, the books were written across decades so that may be the reason.
@@keegszzz8356 Sorry, I just went by local library classification where they are in the same self as the others. I haven't read it since I was in middle school (only like half way through) so some of it might have gone over my head and I frankly don't remember much of it.
The first anime that made me cry was HunterxHunter, Chimera Ant arc. Anyone else who cried at the ending of that arc? Don’t wanna spoil it, but I cried like a baby at the ending.
I had a really easy drivers test on my first go. Suburb in Tennessee, so I didn't have to worry about parallel parking, roundabouts, and all cars are automatic nowadays. However, after leaving the DMV, as I was getting on the entrance ramp to the interstate to head home, my mom asked me to unlock the window. I didn't realize window lock was a thing, so I had to look down to find the switch. Took about 4 or 5 seconds and as I look back up I see that the van that was pretty far in front of me just before had stopped in the middle of the ramp. I slammed on the brakes and yet ever so slightly bumped it. We both get out and see that there was no damage done and I immediately realize it was the nice middle eastern lady that was sitting next to me in the dmv all day who knew I had literally just gotten my license. We shared a nervous laugh, glad that there was no damage and continued on. Best lesson I could've ever had to never take my eyes off the road. Tl;dr: I rear ended a car 5 minutes after getting my license, and it was the person I was just sitting next to in the dmv. No damage, turned out fine.

I relate to Gigguk a lot here. My first foray into healing anime was after Mother's Basement recommended Anohana. After bawling my eyes out at that show, over the course of 30 days, I proceeded to watch Your Name, Violet Evergarden+Ova+Movie, A Silent Voice, Your Lie In April, Plastic Memories, A Place further Than the Universe, Maquia, Angel Beats, Clannad and After Story. My tear ducts were pissed at me after that month. Now I love healing anime. So thank you Mother's Basement and the podcast crew for opening my eyes to healing anime.
The hardest challenge in my life is to wait till i don't remember every scene from Code Guess so i have a legit argument for myself to rewatch it instead of watching new anime

Since they have episodes recorded in advance, it'll be a few weeks before we know if they had Mori as a guest or they were just messing with us by copying her tweet.
Its very hard to assume anything as well. Mori won't do a face reveal, obviously. And doing a podcast with her not sitting there seems a bit problematic. All we can really do is sit back and die of anxiety
@@oxygenconsumingindividual not so sure about that. In Marine and Fubuki's radio show, Sugita Tomokazu (Gintoki/Escanor's VA) went there wearing his usual Warman costume. And the girls noticed it. So yeah they were physically visible to the guest. Mori can be physically in front of them if the podcast is full audio. In this format, her identity must be hidden "from us" but usually productions such as this podcast can be professional enough to hide the identity of someon like Mori while being in their presence.
25:40 You give way to your right, If there's 4 people then whoever got their first goes first. If you all got their simulteneously, fast car wins (in AUS)
Uhh, no? You can check the website (nsw roads and maritime government website) it says you give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout. You're the people he's talking about when he says people are taught wrong
25:17 Joey being confused about roundabout roadrules is just me until I did my car theory. Apparently a roundabout counts as a regular intersection if it has no signs or road markings, meaning you have to give way to the person from the right, but by far the most roundabouts have markings that make you give way to the people on the crossing road (so the people on the roundabout) at ALL entries of the roundabout, so you always have to give way to everyone. But that's just bc of the road markings, not bc its a roundabout. That shit made me anxious, how would a roundabout even be safe if you have to figure out who goes first while driving in this circle inside an intersection.
I love all 3 of them, but as someone that's not "super" into this stuff, Connor is my lifeline for knowing what's going on and being the relatable voice of reason with the wilder topics
So, the issue with Ghibli movies is that they are their own genre, in a certain sense. Indeed, they are the closest thing to a Disney movie from Japanese animation, and that's why people love them. When people (and Miyazaki himself) criticism "anime-style", they criticize the act of writing and producing something entirely on a certain set of archetypes. I really love "Your Name", but it's impossible to deny that most LN and movies in that "genre" can be recognized from a mile away. Just like most Disney and Pixar movies fall into One/Two archetypes, even when the directors are very different! Ghibli, on the other hand, has its own identity, and each director has a specific recognizable approach to cinema. The criticism lies ultimately in films following a style rather than trying new stuff, or at least their own style. Anno is famous not only because of NGE, but because he created his own personal approach. The same goes for people like Kunihiko Ikuhara or, hell, Shinkai himself.
whenever I wanna cry I just watch the Violet Evergarden Episode of the Mother who wrote her daughter letters for each year after she dies till the daughter becomes an adult, I die everytime I see that episode
Usui Takumi is definitely one of the best guys to ever grace a shoujo manga (handsome, funny, smart, kind, etc), Joey has made an excellent choice of husbando
Having watched this podcast really put joey's and connor's personalities into perspective for me. I always thought joey had severely strong opinions and was the type to carry conversations, but seeing him interact with others made me see how patient, relaxed, and logical he really is. Connor, on the other hand, really is an extrovert. Vivacious, sometimes too single-minded, overly-practical. It's nice to observe.
i gotta say all this speak of comedy anime and tbh Gintama once made me and a friend laugh so hard we were put to tears. I'm amazed and disappointed it wasn't even mentioned.
@@m-wan2547 I disagree. Gintama first season is pretty comedy-centered, which in itself I done very well, than from the next season onwards it shifts to a tragedy-shounen anime
If you want to be an animator watch “Nichijou”( “my ordinary life” in English ) The show is a masterclass of animation. . . My favorite scene was the class room argument about the soba, Following the bow. 💀
Cowboy Bebop's setting is the main character and the attention to detail to make a believable multi-planetary future Champloo is great too tons of Style of but it's Japan
I agree with Connor on The Great Pretender 100%. I had a lengthy discussion before about why it should have been in english (or whatever they speak) and similar stories should be aswell. It makes it WAY less confusing if everyone just speaks the language they are supposed to in the show, once they start having other languages thrown in. The Chinese also were subbed. That was fine, too. I like it, it makes it more natural and I can't tell you how confusing the interpreter scenes were. Same for Black Lagoon once they were in Japan. At least in the english dub they could have mixed in the japanese dub for those episodes...
That can't be right where else can Zebra's cross the road? JK but in all seriousness what do you think they call the crosswalks with only two horizontal lines across the street?

That synchronised chair shift at 1:02:05 though! Edit: Also wonder what Great Pretender would be like if someone decided to mix the audio dubs around so that we hear the language that is actually being said. Pre sure all the necessary dub tracks are available on Netflix.

Wait really???
I love joeys and garnts sycronised “why” when Conner says something they think is stupid 😂😂
Why not just wait until all the episodes are out?

Imagine some people being taught the law 😂
Although Taswegians indicating into and out of roundabouts is weird.
Uhh, no? You can check the website (nsw roads and maritime government website) it says you give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout. You're the people he's talking about when he says people are taught wrong
Right, which it's going to be anything on your right as roundabouts only go one way.
In america, all you do is go if its open, if there is enough time for you to go, you go
Everybody replying because of what he wrote, I’m just here because it’s PaperPatriot.

Yesss xDDDDD SAME
So you're a normie?
