I heard her live at the Chicago Lyric and the Met and the Washington National Opera in six of her great pre-weight loss roles [two Wagner and four Strauss]. This video gives only a ghost of what the voice actually sounded like in the house. One felt completely enveloped in shimmering gold. I also heard her first fully staged opera performance [in Salome which she had refused to sing when heavy although her voice was perfect for it[. The voice at that time [about a year after the operation and weight loss] was still mostly intact and large but had lost some of its lustrous, golden sound. I think if she had stayed in the Strauss and lighter Wagner roles she could have preserved her voice, which was always more of a Strauss that a hoch Wagner voice. Levine pushed her into the heavy roles [Elektra, Isolde, Brunnhilde] too soon after the operation and helped to ruin her voice.
I don't think she ever sang Elektra? In any case, it's a pity I never got to hear her prior to the changes. I heard her in Salome in 2013 or so. The voice was penetrating, but its cushion was completely gone.
She did nothing to her voice. She was thrown out of a production at Covent Garden because the director declared her too fat to portray the character. So she was forced to lose weight and had a gastric bypass. to become slim. This radical weight loss ruined her voice. WHAT A LOSS.
@@cush6827 I don’t think that she successfully relearned how to support her voice. One thing we need to keep in mind though is that there were probably other reasons why she chose to undergo surgery. I’m not condoning what CG did, but apparently her weight was causing significant health issues for her. Ultimately, health is more important than voice.
Vocally she is fabulous AND her pronunciation is right on!

This is surely the best rendition of this aria ever.
Sad what she did to her voice in recent years.

@@m.buchberger125 Yeah, she did that to herself, though. Also, there are ways to maintain the voice in spite of weight loss.

@@m.buchberger125 nobody forced her to do anything. she chose to get surgery to lose weight and she lost her middle and low registers.
it is not the best rendition of this aria ever unless you never heard anyone else sing it
I've heard much better.....
Gee, thanks so much for feeling the need to post that... LOL
