- I attend a 1 week winter school for Nuclear Physics graduate students called TMD school 2022. Follow me throughout the week and see all the interesting topics we learn about.
All of the lectures can be found here (time stamps are currently being added to the videos):

Hey Andrew, will we be able to access the lectures you recorded?(maybe even your talk;) )
They’re in the description (I can’t upload my talk as it hasn’t been published yet). I recommend holding off for a few days on checking out the lectures until I’ve had time to add time stamps to all the videos. I’ll post in my community tab once it’s done, but I figured I’d put it in the description anyway.
@@AndrewDotsonvideos Hey Andrew, awesome content as always! I am just starting physics and was wondering what the best/most useful programming language would be. Especially if I am interested in particle physics?
@@AndrewDotsonvideos my life as a physic student is failing
16th!! TMD winter school…the cat…we got it all! You spilled drink on our Kelly! Love, Mom 💕
Just wanted to share that last week I was offered admission to the PhD program at ODU! Still waiting for other offers, but since I also have interest in the applications of QCD to nuclear and particle physics, ODU is a top choice for me.
Right on, they actually have some of the worlds experts on TMDs, if not THE expert.if you’d like to know more about their program, feel free to shoot me an email. Congrats though, this is an exciting (albeit nerve racking time)!
Oh my gosh, I was as well, and for the same interests too! We might be seeing each other this fall, how strange!
Congratulations!!!
Ordinary differential university
I'm in high school and I've been very interested in science for a couple of years. A month ago, I started exercising. You didn't only show me TMD equations, but also a handstand pushup!? Wtf man!? U crushed my self esteem. But seriously, Im so happy when you upload, especially vlogs. Thanks for amazing content, sir.
Took me 26 years to start learning about this stuff. You're in highschool and doing it. You're doing great.
Thanks for the links to the lectures. I will do my best to avoid sweeping the tadpoles under the rug.
😂
I love your videos! they're super helpful thank you!
My man can do handstands better than I can stand myself🍉
Thanks for sharing Andrew! Glad to see an upload
always love a new video, QCD is always fun.
I think we need more workout videos
what a motivational video! I cant wait for those "water cooler conversations" in the future!
Glad you're still uploading, good luck smart guy.
This was an awesome video! I can tell you really enjoyed the conference.
Great video as usual , Passing the vibe check.
IT'S FINALLY HERE!
Damn! Thanks for this quality video, Andrew! I want to attend an in-person winter/summer school like that someday!
great video man, keep up the good physics.
I've been waiting for this
Ur def an inspo to me, currently in community college considering switching my major from philosophy to physics. Taking some basic classes (Foundations and Pre-Calc) to test the waters before I transfer in the fall :)
Great video Andrew!
“And I’m terrified of not remembering something” I feel that in my core.
those were some great aerial shots. glad to see you expanding your media production skills on top of studying higher level physics :D
Thanks!
Thank you a lot for this video. Love you!
"Dead cat" less than a min in.... this is gonna be a good vid
As a fellow grad student in STEM with a BS in physics, it's just extraordinary how uninteresting some topics are to me in my opinion. Jesus christ man, you are built different. There is no way that I could motivate and bring myself to do what you do. Respect! Lots of hard work there. Keep it going!
You are the reason I'm interested in Physics more than everything :))
I thinking making yourself ask 1 question each lecture is a great piece of advice. Thank you for that!
It’s really helped keep me engaged in lectures. You bet!
You've inspired me to study physics a lot more than I used to.
Hey man, congrats on having the opportunity! Hope all was well!
Thanks and likewise!
@@AndrewDotsonvideos Cheers!
10:18 That came out of nowhere!
Great video, you're a very good person :)
*casually impresses us with his awesome handstand abilities*
I love this more cinematic style
Thanks!
I loved that onion joke, very relatable content
We'll need a Free-Body Diagram showing all forces acting upon your hand during a one-armed handstand...as well as the force the floor is applying to your hand.
10:13 When you meet a new kid on the playground and start to become friends
Hahahaha
"Because, let's face it, something always goes wrong" - Ah... that cut deep into me. Lol.
Nice.
also
TMDeez nuts
Finally someone who gets it
New upload? Let's. Fucking. Gooooo.
I thought TMDPDFs were a downloaded PDF that had "too much detail"
So cool!
more workout videos! maybe a handstand tutorial?
Plot twist: Andrew attended the lectures as a courtesy - he already knows the inner workings of the universe
Lol no but they were super patient with all my questions, that’s for sure.
Sierra Nevada beer. Chilling. Nice.
I also work with TMDs, but in my case TMDs are transitional metal dichalcogenides. I was very confused at first thinking that you were working with experimental solid state physics hahahaha. Nice work
Hey Andrew, I am actually considering doing a summer school (rather than a winter school) at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. Of course a bit different than this, but I was wondering whether you have had any experiences with summer schools and if you think it is worth it. For me it seems fun and all but I am not sure if it is worth throwing away the entire summer (8 weeks), mainly because I have a very busy period coming up with my bachelor thesis and after the summer I am starting with my masters in Physics so I might need a bit of holiday in between. Anyway this is the reason I am not sure yet if I want to do it. Do you think you can give me any advice on this?
Nice 👍🏼
GOAT
yooo finally another phlog
lol the second I saw the slides, I knew the speaker would be jian-wei qiu... seems like a really great school, now I regret I didn't find out about it sooner...
Can be hard to follow as a first pass after learning qcd but such valuable lecture notes to look back on. I’m not sure when/if there will be another TMD school, but I’ll let people know about the HUGS school next summer which he’s also taught at.
Significantly less drinking was shown compared to our UK nuclear physics 'summer' school
❤️
Hey for the chronic lower back pain have you tried a stand/sit desk? I ordered one on line and my backpain cleared right up. Turns out the human body is not designed to sit at a desk all day
NICEEE!
What books would you recommend to learn QCD?
Physics undergrad here. After watching most of your videos I am terrified of my lack of mathmatical skill (it’s not non existent just feels lacking) but I don’t have much if any time to take more math classes in my major as I started my physics major a bit late
Any tips?
A lot of the higher level math you eventually might need (tensor calculus, group theory, etc) is often taught in house rather than taking a formal course in the math department. Especially a math methods course will be helpful assuming youll have to take one of those, if not in undergrad than in grad school for sure. I felt the same way in undergrad but I got there eventually!
yeah i study AGN jets as well!! 😎 oh that note: do you notice that in astrophysics there are much more women than in nuclear physics?? That is at least my experience and I really don’t understand why.. let me know if you have a theory as to why that is or if it is different in your experience 🤓 love to see how your videos evolve with you!
Yeah it does seem that way to me as well. Could be that interest in astronomy is nurtured more for young women than interest in other areas in stem on average, really not sure though. Lack of role models in the field (there are a few really heavy hitters in nuclear physics that are women, just not many women in general) is another possible reason. There is this massive proposal in nuclear physics currently being written by majority women and everyone is really optimistic for it passing which is pretty cool. So In the near future I think we could expect a surge of new post doc positions that could be filled by women which would be great for the role model argument. These are just observations from the outside though, I can’t speak on womens actual experiences in the field.
10:18 woaaah holy shit
Hey Andrew just had a small question - we have been studying from school that the universe is expanding. But for something to expand there must be a vacuum right? If so, what are its boundaries? How would you determine it?
I have no idea😅
@@AndrewDotsonvideos i guess it would be really interesting to investigate 😅
Is there a link to apply to this conference?
If you did not enjoy doing research in nuclear physics what would have been your next choice for research?
Probably cosmology
I paused this vid at 4:20
hahah hope your knee is alright Andrew
Hey Andrew, could you add your uncertainty in your measurement of the times?
+- 24 hrs
@@AndrewDotsonvideos i see
i heard that if you comment within 24 hours of a andrew dotson video you get a heart on your comment :D
you're a Dr now right? Dr. Andrew
Andrew! I see you've been taking creatine!!

Hi Andrew!
Hello there!
I want to experience this opportunity so much, but I am a mexican student
I'll like for the cat, not the fact that your videos always make my day.
Hey Andrew, i have a question. How much chemistry did you need to study for nuclear physics?
You'd rather need nuclear physics to study chemistry. It is physics that that explains stuff like chemistry, not the other way around
You'll learn more of the "chemistry" you'll need in quantum mechanics than in chemistry in my opinion. Just pay attention to angular momentum (orbital and spin) and scattering:)
Thanks!!!😀😀
- ... go in person when things are back to normal it's been super valuable
*by the way I can do handstands (decides to flip himself 180º)

Get on Twitter my fellow physics nerd.
oooh unexpected booti bum bum
Who even cares about longitudinal momenta on the lightcone? All my homies use impact parameter or \xi and t.

@@AndrewDotsonvideos As another PhD student in the field it is nice to see this. Keep up the good work.
Do you know when you're defending?
Hey Andrew, I am grad student at UNM! Can I have your email? I was wondering to discuss something.
You doing a good job. Appreciated!
