A video like this could not thrive on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or even Facebook for that matter. This is my attempt to explain what's good about RUclips, and to encourage decisions within RUclips's leadership to consider leaving a bit of money on the table in favor of protecting the beautiful cathedral that they have created for us. Following the short-term numbers will destroy the beautiful thing you have created, but if you stay the course and stay true to Your Voice, I believe the fact that Educational content thrives here on RUclips will ultimately make you win in the end. Thank you to those who work at RUclips for making a platform where beautiful things like this can exist. The challenge now is to fight to keep it this way, when the siren song of more dollars is no doubt trying to pull you away from that which is good.
Well said!
☝️☝️☝️ this is so extremely important. Thanks for all you do & God Bless You!
Your awesome Destin
That was a good choice of verse at the end, Destin. I have watched your channel for years and I really appreciate your content.
Thank you! I'm so happy you are resisting the shorts movement, while there may be a place for such things - When I see a SED video, I know it's great content and I want there to be a substantial amount of info being hurled in my direction. Thank you for saying it so well, I agree
Thanks for this thoughtful video Destin. I am constantly reminded of how ‘the medium is the message’ which makes me wonder what is the real message of RUclips? I think for a long time the message of RUclips has been in depth, quality content, which contrasts with other social media platforms. Like you I hope they keep it this way and don’t keep trying to copy every other platform out there. What I love about your work is you’ve never lost your voice. Thanks for using your voice for good on here.
Yeah
you fell off + ratio + the hood watches Tom Nicholas now
I was a bit sad when you made the video about the need to change your titles due to the algorithm, it felt like youtube already started evolving to bury your (and destin's and many others') quality channels under piles of clickbait fiesta without any substance behind.
It reminds me of an old interview of a leader of the first TV channel in france (TF1) explaining the meaning of their programs is to sell people's attention to the advertisers...
Its weird because I noticed the evolution of Derek's and Destin's channel. Not in a negative way, but just noticed how much more in depth their videos were progressing. I still found myself watching videos that were 15-25 min long and was still engaged just as much as the 10 min videos. STILL incredible content from my favorite creators, learning subjects I had no idea I was interested in. YOU really are getting smarter everyday. Thank you guys for the content over the last 10-12 years. The impact has not gone unnoticed. Cheers
I appreciate the kind words Derek. I appreciate you and count you as a true friend. I’ve really enjoyed your work lately for many reasons. I’m excited to see you hit your stride and lead us all towards more intelligent content.
Thank you all creators still try to steer RUclips to the right direction.
We are all trying! " like and subscribe" 😄😄

As Destin would say: “in a world of talkers, be a THINKER and a doer”. Thank you Destin for thinking about how content on internet should be delivered and for producing such good stuff for so many years.
Very good points. To add to the conversation, I'm not a fan of the dislike button no longer showing the count either. Now it's harder to sort through tutorial videos. I learn how to do some household tasks like change outlets here on RUclips. Now I can't tell if the video is clickbait, low quality, or if everyone got electrocuted unless I read the comments in every video. The problem is, content creators can turn the comments OFF. So now people here on RUclips can curate a well crafted lie for watch time, and even propaganda can flourish now. I think they're creating a monster without even realizing it. The RUclips shorts are only going to exacerbate this downward trend too.
Very valid point.
I have cut down on new content since they removed the buttons numbers. That's ok, I have got plenty i know are good.
Its all part of youtube becoming a better part of the Marxist-Communist-Socialist propaganda machine.
I remember when they did the same thing with the thumbs down on comments. That’s when RUclips comments went from mostly helpful and quality to trolling and garbage. This will have the same effect on their video contents quality. It’s a huge mistake.
I suggest we all use the feedback option in the app to let them know, we want it back and why. If I was looking up a repair or troubleshooting video. I used the likes to dislikes as a meter of the reliability of the video.
Thank you Destin for the fun photo project!
Running around Paris to find the exact same spots and capture it again was like a really cool Indiana Jones adventure!

After the disappearance of the dislike counter it's clearly harder to see yt in such a positive light, but i think that the overall message is still extremely important AND relevant, all content producers should take this message to heart, if they didn't already by themselves.
God bless you Destin, never change.
you can add a chrome extension to bring back the dislike counter
@@zangoz_2693yes but so many people are watching videos via the YT app on our smartphones or tablets.
Agreed. I'm not a fan of shorts, but rather more thorough content. Shorts, TikTok and reels are fine, but everyone wants to be what RUclips is. RUclips shouldn't try to be what they are not.
I prefer trousers in winter
God, why is everyone making shorts?! It's December for Christ sake.
@@unlokia That could actually work as a pretty good metaphor. TikTok lives in a hot climate and wears shorts, and now RUclips is seeing them wear shorts and now RUclips wants to wear shorts too. But it's just going to end up with RUclips getting frostbite because it doesn't work in this climate.
What shorts are doing is basically reuploaded tik toks. Most of the shorts I watch are just short food clips from content creators who upload on tik tok and youtube shorts side by side. Basically somewhat a reincarnation of vine. It's a format that fits certain contents but not the long-form video youtube is already providing
RUclips thrived with short videos about cats, memes, and "fails" during its beginning and by dropping them they allowed tiktok to pick up the idea and grow as a contender. RUclips is not copying other platforms by using shorts. RUclips WAS the main platform for short videos, and corporate karen made the mistake get rid of them by punishing creators who made them.
Long videos are fine, but some of us also have been enjoying short videos for over 15 years in this platform. I'd rather have both.
RUclips needs to be replaced with something better. Removing dislike view is such a dumb decision, one of many these past few years.
They shouldn’t remove it. They should just bring back some stuff
You can try something like Rumble, but those are political echo chambers
@@NickzAndMikz You mean it's a certain group of people that were censored off of RUclips?

With those acoustics in Notre Dame, imagine how absolutely crazy the fire might have sounded before it destroyed the ceiling.

I use RUclips mainly for education. I watch tutorials and DIY projects, and the dislike button saved me from wasting my time with bad videos, because people with more knowledge than me would dislike something that is wrong.
Now I have no idea if something new for me is correct or wrong !!! RUclips just destroyed education!!! 🤬
Why I usually read comments first.
👍 maybe everybody should start their comments with a thumbs up or thumbs down 👎 👍 to replace the youtube editing.

@@rebeccawhite3804 Too messy. And you wouldn't be able to know the actual ratio with thousands of them. Negative emotions are more contagious and hence some trolls will abuse it just for the heck of it.
Same. I'd use the dislike ratio as a barometer on if it was terrible advice or if the video was click bait. RUclips already takes down comments on the regular. Not a good way forward.

Completely agree. So many other RUclipsrs I see just copy the latest trend or success, rather than stick to their style that gave them the passion in the first place.

I agree about Notre Dame; most of the reason people want to visit is to see that time capsule; how all the parts of such a building encapsulated a period of time in France and Europe's history, and the relationship the Catholic Church had with art, architecture, and civil engineering.
When you randomly change bits of it to have modern art, you lose part of the spirit of the cathedral, what makes it what it is.
Hasn't ND literally been changed and altered through the past tons of times though ?
Nobody really said anything about those instances. It just occured and anyone adapted to the alterations as still representing the " original " entity.
Ya no, Notre Dame is very much a living and changing edifice. It has endured many ravages of history from wars and uprisings to the slog of time, and if it weren’t for Victor Hugo it might have been torn down entirely.
I personally think it should have been slightly changed and updated after the fire. There is nothing more Notre Dame than an update after turmoil.
Hi when is turning pi2 vid coming?
France becoming slowly but surely a muslim territory and you can tell by living here that people are more and more looking to copy and spread north African culture . That's why in some city like Strasbourg or Marseille it's always easy to find cash for a new mosque rather than refreshing to identical an old and lesser attractive over time church or cathedral .
it encapsulated the whole period of time between the 12th century and today, it has never stopped changing over the centuries. If people visit it and think it hasn't, they're missing the point
A very fascinating video!!!! The power of the “Voice” is amazing!! Thanks for your version/vision of voice….. You hit a major point I have thought of often. The “short” version… I watch Utube because I have the choice to go in-depth on a subject and think about it. It provides many opinions and points of view. That’s the short part. But it also allows you to think about it and make your own choice. That’s the long part. At least for me… Thanks again for the video!!! Definitely a change of pace!!! Keep your voice!!!! Please!!!! In this point in time too many are content with letting others “Voice” for them……
I’m so grateful for your channel and work. Love the material, perspective and heart and soul of your work.
Algorithms from a handful of companies are altering our culture in small increments but not insignificant amounts. It’s important for creators to remember their values. Thank you Destin for keeping them.
Last video's frog in context
I also don't like how they removed the dislike button. It's going down the path of the other platforms that also don't have dislikes. It really provides a good measure of whether a video is actually good or bad. It is supposed to be a useful tool, but some people just use it as a weapon and now we all have to suffer without one of RUclips's greatest tools.
Other than YT Rewind I never encountered a video where the dislike count impacted whether I was going to watch. It may have made me feel better about disliking it, seeing that many others did as well, but I'm genuinely curious whether it changed your behavior -- not your opinion.
almost nobody used it as a weapon - people used it to express their actual opinion of disagreement. Often at RUclips itself. And youtube didn't like that.
@@x--. It's actually very useful for education videos and tutorials, so you can see which ones are more trustworthy or useful to other people
Yeah, ratio is gone, so bye-bye useful indicator if the video is actually good. Now the likes are less valuable too because they stopped being compared to anything. Should I compare them to the number of views the video has? It's so clunky and backward and hardly tells about video quality at all.
@@x--. The dislike count was a tool I used for determining if I was going to watch an educational video.
A key example would be when looking for a video on how to do a simple car repair.
The dislike number helped me avoid click-bait videos, and guide me to the one video that told me what I needed in less than ten minutes.
-
The dislike counter helped avoid clickbait videos that are just re-postings of other peoples' content in a long video of marginally related content.
Hi Destin. That's one of the best video I've ever seen about being a individual, being true to yourself, being who you really are and not letting RUclips, Facebook and all the other tech companies dictate your content and stuff with their algorithms. It's really food for thoughts. 👍👍

@@loganmartin59 Interesting. I’d like to see that.
Thank you Destin for being honest and open with your thoughts
Fascinating and a little initially depressing to see all these sights swarming with people where they were not so much 100 years ago. I wonder if that is down to population growth of the shrinking globe brought about by cheaper air travel. Then I see your bit about actually experiencing these places in the flesh, and I realise that yes, they may not look as pristine, and spacious, but they were built to be enjoyed in person, not simply seen in photographs, and I realise that even though they are disfigured by the swarms of people, the democratisation of international tourism has enabled these places to be enjoyed as they were designed to be enjoyed.
I agree with you. Don't sell out! Make videos for you and if viewers don't appreciate it, that's their problem. When the viewers pay you directly a substantial amount, then they can complain. As long as the content is free, viewers should take it or leave it, and since you did not make the content for any specific viewer, the criticism of some random stranger on the internet with entitlement is a serious mental disability. Not all viewers are reasonable and respectful no matter what you do. Make the videos you want to see and nurture the viewers who appreciate your hard work. Everyone else is an unnecessary distraction and their delusional self-entitled and self-important opinions are of no value to you.
Right? Well said!
"the criticism of some random stranger on the internet with entitlement is a serious mental disability. Not all viewers are reasonable and respectful no matter what you do." Are you respectful by saying that? Your opinion feels a little bit like delusional and self-entitled...
@@arnohakk114 Not at all. Politely calling out people being rude, or supporting someone who's being attacked by another with an obvious mental disability isn't “self entitled”, it's just facts. The fact that you feel personally hurt by his comment suggests to me that you owe someone an apology. I'm not rude on the internet unless someone earns it, and even then, I stick to facts, ergo, I'm not the least bit hurt by his comment. I've met people with obvious mental handicaps who are very rude and your hesitation to call it what it is just enables the problem.
@@wilfdarr Actually, I was just suprised how she is devaluating people for insulting which is like doing the same thing as she complained about... I did not insult anybody, so no apology needed I guess?
@@arnohakk114 First: Devaluating isn't a word.
Second, the difference is that the people HE (Carey can be both male or female: in this case he's a man) is speaking of habitually devalue others [hard] work, while this person is being critical of their need to unnecessarily and habitually belittle others. If you can't see the difference between the two, there's something wrong with you. They are not the same thing.
I love how educational RUclips
Unlucky if i cant see dislikes i cant know, video is good or not when i watching tutorials 😞
As someone who has used most social media platforms, I couldn’t agree more that RUclips is net positive. I often feel I need to take a break from Instagram and facebook for mental health. RUclips on the other hand helps me expand my world view and learn. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows here, but it’s the best we got! Thanks for encouraging the company to keep it that way!
Absolutely nailed it! RUclips is a publishing platform. You are a content creator. You earn/"perform" for both yourself and RUclips. RUclips exists to profit from your work. It's options are to do so either parasitically (by consuming value from you) or symbiotically (by creating value for you). In reality, this is a spectrum. But the fact remains, the content creator is the host.
No content creator should ever change for their publishing platform, in the same way that no person should ever change for their mosquito.
Smarter Every Day is my doorway to the thinky place.
I've never had an Instagram account, I've tried TikTok for a few minutes and hated it, and my Facebook account, which I've had for about 10 years, I rarely use. What I've noticed is that all these platforms want you to do is consume and keep them on their platforms as long as they can. But what's worse is the algorithms they use to impose an opinion on you, whether you realise it, or not. The reason I rarely use Facebook is because I did notice what was trying to be pushed down my throat and I don't like it. These types of platforms are dangerous and really set up echo chambers that take people down negative rabbit holes that turns them antisocial and as Destin says, it changes their voice. RUclips still has an element of that as well, but there is so much content like what Destin provides to learn and enjoy. His channel is varied, educational and, I believe, comes from a great heart without being hyperbolic or trying to assert an opinion, rather he encourages you to think for yourself, and that's what I like.
Anything owned by Meta(FaceBook) is a bad idea, TikTok sucks, I could write an article on everything I hate about it. But their is more platforms and most of the other ones are not bad, RUclips is going downhill with stuff like removing the dislike button, but it’s the only good option. I don’t like Twitter because of its community but that’s purely just my opinion. There is a new platform called GETTR that is like Twitter but it’s trying to stop canceled culture instead. Discord and Reddit seem to me like the places to go, Reddit divides itself into countless communities so if you don’t like the community just find a new one. Anyways that’s my 2 cents on these social media platforms,
Tiktok it brain cancer.
Whats really scary is how Facebook promotes conflict because conflict promotes engagement.
You hate tik tok until the algorithms start only showing you exactly what you wanna see.

Just two days before Notre-Dame burned, I was in Paris on a school trip in Europe where we explored different important places from WW2. I was standing in front of the Notre-Dame but decided not to go in due to long lines and time constraints (this was a school trip after all). I remember after we’d moved on from Paris and were in Belgium, watching on TV as the spire of the cathedral fell, engulfed by the flames. My biggest regret then and now was not taking the time to go inside and see it with my own eyes. It was right there, and though it’ll be rebuilt, I would never be able to see and feel how it once was myself. This video allowed me to at least get some feel for what it was like, and for that I thank you, Destin.
Wow that timing
Hopefully it will be back to it's normal form.. I'm glad I went there a few years ago after living in France and finally got the chance to go inside.. lesson is, try not to miss an opportunity when it's in front of us.
This is just the coolest thing in every way!
Thank you and your team for providing such amazing content!
Thanks Destin I need that occasion enlightening ideas throughout the year! Merry Christmas from Hong Kong
There’s two things I found interesting about this. Firstly, cathedrals like Notre Dame are extraordinarily vast given their age. The people who planned it and laid the foundation stones would never have lived long enough to see it completed. The scale of such buildings is such that there’s constant building maintenance going on. You could say that, from the first stone to this day, builders have never really left.
The second point is that those glass negatives are almost certainly 5 x 4 inches, a format that is still in use today. 5 x 4 and 10 x 8 large format cameras are still used for architectural and studio photography, especially where poster-sized images are required. Even in this digital age, larger formats provide for incredible detail and detect a range of colours that normal cameras can’t.
Remember the Argo...
Shorts are fast food but long form is a home cooked meal. Yes fast food is popular, but it cannot beat moms cooking. It doesn't make you feel good in the long term, that's why I think there will always be a spot for long form videos here on RUclips. Shorts is just an answer to where the attention market is moving towards, and I am not immune to this. Destin you said you are resisting but are not closed to shorts. I am a noob but I can personally vouch that there is value in converting a long form video into a short. It is like distilling an idea to its purest form, it shows whats important, and is just another tool in content creation.
Accurate comparison! On point.
I like and agree with the food comparison. I hadn't considered that aspect or possibility of using shorts in that way- as sort of a condensed blurb or, perhaps, even as a preview, teaser or trailer for the full length videos, or just quick, fleeting, passing thoughts or observations on the go.
Well said! Absolutely agree!
In some aspects I like to equate shorts to, if you've read or heard of Kantian philosophy, Kantian lower pleasures and long videos to Kantian higher pleasures.
Shorts are like snacks/ junk food, while longer form videos are the main course. Like snacks, shorts are fine in small amounts, but are addictive and unhealthy if they become all you consume, as they are shallow and don't go in depth.
Very well said Destin, Stay Original as you always do. Thank you for making us aware about these things!
I love your love of graphs. You've made me realize how useful they are.
The internet: “let’s get people hyped about digital NFTs!!”
Dustin: “So I bought a bunch of physical slides from the 1960s”
It is telling that one of the biggest media phenomena of the year is Get Back, the Beatles documentary based on a cache of film footage. It is an amazing piece of history, like being inside the group during their final months together. So much of the video and digital era will be lost.
Hi, I'm Emilia. Can you guess my age and nationality? Hom😊
@@mafia5509 47 years old from Russia.
This was enjoyable to watch. I've thought about it often when I chat to full time YT friends who I can see are chasing what brings in the clicks, and thus revenue. And it's their livelihood, so I never judge but I can tell they don't always enjoy it as much. I have also not been able to engage with shorts, which tbh I've considered almost a failing on my part as a 'creator'. But I am privileged to have an outside job, and a small enough RUclips channel to not really feel those pressures in a meaningful way. I can't imagine what it's like to run a channel with millions of subs and several employees. The other reason I liked it was that I've spent a great deal of time in Paris and love it dearly - it's an interesting choice for then & now photos as it's had strict building restrictions in the centre since even before the Belle Époque. A thoughful introspective vid :)
So basically you can't just enjoy the vid without bringing attention to yourself. RUclipsrs like you are ruining the algorithm.
This has nothing to do with the content of the video, but how do you feel about the large amount of sponsorships/ads on RUclips that are arguably deceptive? (VPN services claiming to protect you from hackers, crypto/stock market dealers of dubious repute etc.)?
Thanks Rohin. Yeah, that pressure you feel to use shorts is what I'm trying to articulate here. My goal was to make something constructive in hopes that one or two important folks inside RUclips would see it. That being said, I acknowledge that they are running a business, and ultimately businesses are run by money. My goal in this video was to try to encourage them to leave some of the money on the table in favor of keeping the essence of what's special about RUclips. I feel that TikTok is a dumpster fire, and I've seen it do far more damage to those around me than good. A video like this could not exist on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or even Facebook for that matter.
@@smartereveryday love your videos ❤️
Walking good youtube videos is like a normal functioning heart, it actually pumps information efficiently.
Shorts for youtube is like a heart with ventricular fibrillation, shorts just twitches the brain but doesn't pump anything.
Destin, what I like about your voice, that seems to be consistent in my eyes is that you enjoy to meet new fascinating and diverse people, people that come from all sorts of backgrounds. I absolutely love how your curiosity gets you excited to meet them and to pick their brains for the expertise they have...from engineers to inventors, to artists and musicians and so on. In my opinion you kept your voice and you are still using it. All that changed is the increased number of friends you make and keep in touch with. Every episode someone new shows up to share their knowledge with your viewers. Thank you for creating new experiences for us, the viewers.
This is so insightful. Owning your voice is important on youtube. Thanks for making this video!
The funny thing is many other "science" channels have already succumbed to it
Hard to have “your voice”… when YT censors those who step out of line😒
Its important every man
Corporations being able to buy your voice and use it to sell product is the only benefit you get from using the internet in this way. We are all no nobody on the Internet by design. Corporations are trying to change that model so they can profit from it. Not so you can have more voice. The Internet is meant to be "EVERYONEs" voice. Not just the highest paid most commercially viable voices curated to us by the Corporations that for all intents and purposes, own them.
It blows my mind how people as smart as Destin, and the people he regularly associates with, could get the Internet so completely wrong. And fall so easily for corporate "gifts".
@@ZennExile its because he lives in a privilaged bubble and has never been censored or had his content taken down without any reason or recourse like so many others have experienced.
As a content creator myself, I agree, we are loosing who we are, trying to please and compete with an algorithm, leading the next generations to something that doesn’t look good…
The algorithm favors corporate and government propaganda anyway so it's not like they care about independent creators anymore.
I think, he and you are confused about you're not doing something like an artwork that expresses yourselves. You're producing a specific product to a specific market whether or not you're aware of. It's not a Van Gogh painting or leading the next generations. It's a product tailored by demand.
"Content"
@@kozatas Sometimes fabricated demand
The demand does not have to be fabricated. In my opinion, the growth of social networks means, that they hit onto something deeply hidden in the human psyche. It´s very well documented in the Social dilemma movie and dilemma it is. We as a society are moving towards something we don´t understand. Is virtual reality the future of mankind? Is this the answer to the Fermi paradox? Did all aliens before us escape to the VR thus making them unobservable?
Its been a month since i have seen your video. During this month I have seen alot of creators referring to your message! You are doing the right thing Destin.
I'm SOOOO HAPPY! I was able to go to Paris before the Notre Dame fire and was able to see it inside and out. One of the best parts was feeding pigeons outside the cathedral with my wife. It really is a special place of European culture and history and it should absolutely be preserved as close to original as possible.
I think there are a few places where they actually managed to find the right balance between "keep it as original as possible", which in my opinion should be the first goal for such a historic building, and on the other hand, put in whatever is needed to acomodate large numbers of visitors.
And to be fair, some change (minor ones) is ok. It is not like nothing ever changed in the 900 years before based on needs and new technology (I guess the building initially had nothing prepared to put in electric wires etc., lights, heating, whatever)
Thank you Destin for this video. You just don't know the impact it had on me: I'm French, I live in Paris, and when Notre Dame went down in flames I had the privilege as a police officer to enter the still smoking cathedral the morning after. Since that day I haven't been back there and avoided watching images of it cause it hurts so much. Therefore, thank you so much for taking me back inside before the disaster !
And yes, your voice counts ! It really does. Thanks for all the learning and discovery on your awesome channel !!!!!!!
Same for me, watching from the USA... My heart was crashing down with the roof. Such a beautiful house of God. I will likely never get to see it in my lifetime, but I felt it as well.
Destin: don't lose your voice.
RUclips: active noise cancellation is on.
You are wonderful. Thoughtful, kind, real. Thank you so much for terrific videos!
So glad for Destin's self awareness and self analysis to know when adapting to an environment is not necessarily a good thing.
sometimes adapting involves....pushing back....as a collective....before it's too late.
I have been hitting that same wall on whether to follow my own voice or chase what the platforms want. RUclips should be fun and I want to keep it that way. Thank you for putting this out as I felt it was less a choice and more a necessity. Make what you love!
I could agree more!
Never expected to see argo here but anyway
Hear hear!
Nice to see a fellow Brony.
and the thing is, there always the chance that both will go hand in hand at some point. Algorithm will sometimes just choose a video to popularize, could be yours next
*You are so right about this, thank you for taking a step to make a video about it... I feel that youtube following pursuit to make its platform more about entertainment is making it lose its educational value, RUclips got to do something about it...*
They did, they removed the dislike count so now you cant tell which tutorials are good and which are just crappy clickbait videos. Well done youtube!
Usually the solution is to do less about it, really. Just let the community discover its own way.
It’s about time that we as the consumer take a step and remove our dependency on one platform. If more and more creators tries to shift to another platform, we the consumers will shift too.
Goodbye RUclips. You are short lived if you keep making such decisions.
It's not that RUclips is going towards entertainment. They are trying to become the next form of television. They are favouring the mainstream media and entertainment companies over small producers. And they curate educational content such that it doesn't cover any topic they deem to be unacceptable, even if the video is purely factual in nature. And I don't think RUclips will change. This is a conscious decision.
@@CristiNeagu you can just not watch the mass media. Hit "don't recommend this channel" when it shows up in your feed. They can only gain views of people watch them... So maybe someone does enjoy their content.
If RUclips can cater to different folks, that's fine.
Thanks Destin! This is one important and heart-warming topic. It is really a conflict to pick what one wants to embrace and what one throwaway while there is a need... like need to survive, more money, fame, etc...
Thank-you. For going against the flow. For staying human. For being real. I appreciate your channel for what it is, not for what YT wants it to become.
I have always loved learning on “Smarter Every Day “. Do Not do short mindless videos. You have covered some of the miracles of life. Keep it up Justin.

You won my subscription when you said you aren’t going to just do what the algorithm wants. Well done sir, well done.
Exactly the moment I dropped my like. 😀
DogCarMan me too.
I remembered this video, and here it is five months later, and I do believe you are doing a phenomenal job of being aware of your voice, I see the improvement in the videos and live it!!! Keep it up, there are not many who do! "Be the change you want to see in the world"
I love how genuine this channel is.
I really love how you applied the "don't lose your voice" to yourself at first, then circled back with tying the message to Big RUclips. Your video really drove that point home.
I recently visited Paris and when near Notre Dame, I couldn't help but be moved to tears with the detailed photo gallery of the damage that they had on display. It really is beyond belief that the cathedral is still standing at all. The photos available on the internet don't really do the damage justice. The team working on the cathedral are heroes in every sense of the word. I know we apply that label to a lot of things these days, however, it takes people of heroic courage to have entered and worked on that structure after the amount of damage done.
I personally hope they make it as it was, recognizing that it will be impossible to recreate everything, but as you said, it's really not my say and others get to make that decision.
I appreciate you not catering to an algorithm and actually creating authentic content. Don't ever change. We need more content creators (and people) like you.
Your videos on social media disinformation ... your science videos... all of them. Phenomenal.
Awesome Job to Matthew for recreating the exact angle and everything. Truly has an artistic eye! Thats amazing
And that's a main reason why I subscribed to you. I love how you investigate something. So far, my favorite is the supersonic canon.
One of the reasons why I have primarily turned to RUclips over cable television is of channels like yours where I feel like I can be entertained, but also walk away having really learned something new. Every 6 months or so I do a youtube cleanse and look through my subscriptions and remove subscriptions that interested me in the moment, but are just filler content in the now. Your channel never gets removed. Its very refreshing that you are being blatantly introspective of your content creation. Just do you! That's what your viewers are here for.
RUclips has the type of videos that cable will never provide. I'd like to try Nebula as it seems to fulfill the role RUclips has in my life but I try and stay away from subscriptions. Maybe in the future I'll justify it. RUclips being free also has allowed people to try different things without crazy startup costs and knowhow. If Destiny's only option was to convince a production studio to allow him a TV show we'd never have SED. And if RUclips devolves into pushing shorts and hiding long-form content then we won't ever get the "next" SED. Who wants to create a long standing educational show on tiktok or Instagram? Nobody. But ads can be shown and data can be tracked. I hope RUclips pushes back on the idea.

I agree to the sentiments of not losing your voice. My content is very specific and has its niche, and I up right refuse to change the format based on the algorithm. I'd rather remain true to myself and continue to make content exactly as I intended with no tweaks to appease the neon god 😁. If it gets views, it gets views. If it doesn't, it doesn't.
Ultimately it goes back to "How much can a person be paid to work to someone else's time or constraints?"
There's a significant amount of passion that the RUclips algorithm constantly misses because it cannot recognize human emotion and how it attracts us to certain content. Stay true to yourself and your base and keep pumping out great content like you do. Just a little Truth and Reconciliation for you :]
I'm actually so happy I watched this video and that you commented on it. I've been looking for a halo RUclipsr to watch, I haven't been in touch with the game and lore since reach came out so I can't wait to watch your stuff!

I adore the "Think!" advice of yours, Destin. Thanks a lot.
Your statement about slides reminds me of something a friend said about why he collects photo negatives “An image can be made at any time pretty much anywhere, but the negative was physically there, it was in the camera and for a brief instant was a witness to the world that we can only see secondhand”
Love your voice Destin!
On top of this, I want to add the recent move by RUclips in making the like/dislike buttons irrelevant.
This has been a terrible move, which will open the doors to click bait videos, bad content overall which we could just skip looking at the like/dislike ration.
As I'm pretty sure RUclips uses the likes as a key element for their "algorithm", I'm now protesting to make it irrelevant for them as well by not liking or disliking anything anymore.
Unfortunately this might hurt some of the creators I follow in the short term, but hopefully if more people do it, we might get our voice back as a viewer.
Well put. Perhaps we can shift to just commenting "like" or "dislike" for a bit.

Much respect. You're one of the few with integrity.
To be fair, the length and depth of the Smarter Every Day videos is one of the reasons I love watching them.
I'll always choose a thorough explanation of a subject over a quick snippet of information a la TikTok.
Keep doing great work, Destin.
I'll be greatly thankful for you and anyone that resists the short video format! I agree with your take wholeheartedly, thank you very much for standing your ground.
What a wonderful video, full of enthusiasm and thought provoking discussion. Plus, it was so much fun to pause it and look closely at how the locations have changed and remained the same through the decades. While doing this I noticed that the modern picture of the Arc de Triomphe is taken from the opposite side from the old picture. The bas relief sculture didn't look the same so I virtually walked around the Arc using Google Street View (we truly do live in the future!) and discovered this. It's amazing how much deep information and data is at everybody's fingertips. Smarter Every Day and Mathieu Stern are adding to that depth of easily accessible knowledge. Thank you!
As soon as you started talking about images and how they affect our perception, I perked up.
I'm a photographer, majored in photography some 30 years ago, and studied the history of photography then. Its interesting once you note how our perception of events is activated by photography, and yeah, its even more fascinating when you realize how much 'data' was captured in those early glass plates. (Only to be partially lost by the ravages of time)
Just as important is the fact that how we capture images changes what we decide to shoot. 150 years ago, you didn't shoot images of your lunch, because it took too long to set up the shot, you had to coat a plate in order to shoot it, and you had to prioritize what you shoot.
On the other hand, *everyone* is a much better photographer than people were 150 years ago. Not just because of the tools we have, but because we can constantly shoot images and get better. We also shoot more images of each other when we're happy, which affects not only how we see ourselves as a people, but how we feel worse when we're sad... because everyone else 'seems happy'. Right?
Again, talking about images and perception is my thing. Thanks, Destin.

Hi Destin. I'm late to this video but just wanted to say thank you. You've always made interesting and valuable content and I'm glad you are resisting the 'trends' and trying to stay true to 'your voice'. Great video, love the old photos and your insightful messages, keep up the great work.
Thank you for staying the course. I personally believe that the short content trend is negatively impacting people’s attention span. My line of work doesn’t allow for such traits but it’s a constant struggle when I train new and younger people. As for the pictures; I have always viewed stills as snapshot in time that cannot be repeated. It captures things in that instant and if you look hard enough it will reward you with immense detail. By far my favorite and most rewarding form of record.
It's so great to hear there are still people who stay true to themselves. I wish others could think like you, especially youtube. Honestly I've been a YT Premium user for a few years now, and with the way they are heading, (as in removing the dislike button and blasting these shorts), I'm not sure I want to keep paying them for something I'm starting to dislike... removing that dislike button seems like a political move, and its taking away the natural right of humans to have an opinion and voice that opinion. I really hope YT will reconsider what they're doing before they ruin their platform, atleast in my eyes.
Same here.
I just cancelled my YT Premium today. I'll be taking advantage of other platforms as much as possible now. The removal of the dislike count/ratio is pivotal in more rapidly identifying misleading content. The change is going to make YT a haven for misinformation, completely undermining all of the fact-checking efforts they have done in recent years. YT just destroyed credibility and accountability on the platform. I did not sign up for that. I'm out.
I wrote to their feedback "i won't pay subscription for removing dislike counter" and did stop paying after they done it.
It's the only way to actually vote, and i hope they will feel something.
@@andrewpotapenkoff7723 Same here. Precisely what I did, too.
I actually feel the opposite about the dislike button and my thoughts go back years before it became a political issue. My contention is that if I dislike a video I simply move on to another one. The content creator will see that in their analytics. Maybe it is just a generational thing, (I'm old) but It just seems unnecessary and cruel to tell someone that you disliked their effort.
Thank you for this! Everyone need to have these thoughts and discussions.

20:59 - This isn't surprising to me, and it's why YT is still my fave platform after 13 years of use. Even with its changes over the years (most of which I haven't really liked), it's better than any other video/social platform. I have learned *so much,* and I've enjoyed learning it!
@Can Nam"Dog nuts" is too scientific -- explain in layman's terms 😀.
Which video platform is better?
Completely agree with you. It's my favourite as well despite all the obnoxious yet hilarious comments in YT!!!
RUclips is by far the best platform for educational content along with engaging comments. It's sad to see a whole new generation wasting their precious time and mind watching 10 second long brain-dead TikTok videos all day long with little to no educational value. It's fine for a few minutes of entertainment now and then, but frankly it's just a bunch of BS from what I've seen.
