In the early 2000s, I was a complete sinophile. I went all in, taking Mandarin lessons, reading tons of books and researching the culture, the history, preparing a move there. This infatuation lasted for 3-4 years. I don’t think it was anything specific but I was gradually turned off entirely with China. Went there on vacay and although there were some cool aspects, I didn’t enjoy interacting with people there. Despite very lucrative teaching opportunities, I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. Ended up teaching in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. To this day, I still feel I dodged a bullet. Now, even the prospect of a layover in China is displeasing to me.
Do you speak Chinese still? Or is it very rusty by now? Did it ever come in handy in southeast Asia?
And did you ever consider going to Taiwan instead?

I actually found myself in a similar situation about 10 years ago, working as a manager of a pub in Sydney, located in a suburb with a lot of Asian immigrants & students. One of my Asian staff introduced me to a Chinese lady in her mid-30's who was out here on a student visa "to learn English" (although she literally couldn't speak two words of English), who was looking to hire me to help fix and sell her car. Being a car guy myself I was glad to go around to her place to check out the car & give her some advice; she thanked me and invited me out to dinner (with my staff member tagging along as a translator). So the lady was a solid 5, possible a 6 and was very pleasant, however there was an air of desperation about her and she just seemed too keen; my translator told me up-front that she found me very attractive and wanted me to go back to her place to "get to know each other better".
Long story short, I politely declined as there just was something amiss. Anyway, found out later that she was one of these "leftover women" who had forgone marriage whilst young to look after her elderly parents & also to pursue a career and had then found herself unable to find a Chinese husband because she was too old (and not a 9 or 10, which evidently would have helped). She had thus come out to Australia on a student visa on the advice of a friend in order to find a husband, however not to gain residency here on a marriage visa (as I had suspected was her motive) but to bring him back home to China to live with her.

Your experience with the English teaching and women sounds like mine here in Japan. I taught for the first few years here and I had all kinds of women throwing themselves at me - showing up at my apartment and would cook and clean and wash and make my apartment very nice, then want me to bang them. I am not stupid. It's obvious it's a trap, so I never allowed myself to do that. I would put a stop to that real fast because you'll find out you're being told you're the father (and most likely you're not) and all kinds of trouble will ensue. I picked out my wife in a very different way and got a really solid, good Japanese woman as my life partner (of 34 years).

I can confirm this is not just a Chinese cultural thing. I used to do home IT/AV work as a side gig in LA, in my early 20's, 2001-2004. I met several single women in their 30-40 who had their seduction techniques. Pics from their younger years is 100% a universal technique. And god bless them!

If only you knew how deep this goes! In the past, I've had the pleasure of accompanying groups of such women who regularly go out to spend evenings with young men who are paid for their time and company. Let's just say that it was a very eye-opening and educational experience.
While they may find it difficult to find anyone willing to marry them, for the right price they have no shortage of short-term dates and drinking partners. These women can be extremely generous to the guys that make them feel desirable too. Some of these men have been publicly called out for bragging online about the lavish gifts showered upon them, and apparently have since become more discreet. However, this group of women are not just the "leftovers." They are also divorcees and even unhappy married women.
Anyway, I just want to say that being the target of her affections did not necessarily mean that she was trying to steal you away or convince you to marry her. She might have just been looking to add you to her "collection." In my experience, these women have often already given up on the notion of marriage, and yet they are still in need of emotional validation and comfort.
Of course, as you indicated, this does not mean that they never find marriage partners, and it seems that when they do find them they are often from foreign cultures. I could go on about why this might be, but I'll end this here.

One of the most strategic ways to ask someone's age from China is to simply ask their Chinese zodiac sign. Knowing this, you can pretty accurately deduce their age (since there are 12). You don't have to ask their age or birthday outright and it makes for an ice-breaking point of conversation.

Technically, Winston married a leftover woman, since Sasha was divorced. He talked about how if a woman isn't married by a certain age, people assume there is something wrong with her. The flip-side is that having a previous marriage, also means there is something wrong with a woman. That's how crazy the culture is in China. A beautiful doctor is stigmatized, because her first marriage didn't work out, and Chinese men don't want "used" wives.
I personally find a divorced woman is better to marry than a naive first timer. The two need to be on the same page and really understand each other and not just live in an idealistic bubble. Divorce has a way of bringing your feet back to the ground.

I once had an interview in Shanghai for an English training center with my would-be boss who was a woman in her 40s. The interview lasted 6 hours and I was locked in the room the entire time, the woman insisted that I move in with her immediately 3 times, when I politely declined and said I was already living with a friend she burst into tears and then would forget/ignore and ask again later. The interview included lots of inappropriate questions, and culminated in the woman insisting that I try on the school teacher uniform in the office infront of her, again I politely declined and said that the t-shirt looked like it would fit me. Before I know it she had lifted my shirt over my head and I made a run for it, luckily being able to unlock the door to get out. Her office led onto the main office where there were about 15 young Chinese women working who all giggled at me running out red faced without a shirt on. Needless to say I found a different job far, far away from this woman and her English school 🌞

I actually had a relationship with a Chinese girl in America who was in that type of situation.
She lived in a huge house and drove a new Range Rover.
Her husband only saw her once or twice a year. But she was so lonely and sad. I didn't really know she was married when I first got involved with her, but later on when I found out it caused problems and the relationship ended in an ugly way.
I still wonder what happened to her after all these years. We had some good times though and we did care about each other.

At 58, men are still attracted to me and don't view me as left over. I'm not sure why Chinese men have the attitude, that women of their own country, of a certain age are no longer desirable. Young women of China only want young highly successful Chinese men they tend to avoid becoming involved with a middle aged or older man, unless the woman is only looking for a sugar daddy. Middle aged to older women tend to be settled, have established themselves and often are far more financially stable than a 20 something and tend to be a better candidate for marriage with a man. In my opinion, any man who wants a 20 something party girl is welcome to her, and I wish them all the best and thank God this kind of man hasn't looked in my direction. In reality, a couple has a partnership, no one is subservient to anyone else. If any Chinese man thinks that by marrying a 20 something party girl, that she will be a subservient wife who will only cook, clean and bear his children then he is very mistaken about that one. A large majority were Chinese women wanting to be pregnant with white American sperm …. For better looking babies according to the women . Blue eyed and blond hair males were the highest in demand . Most Asian women were there for the same reason . Then went back to their countries . There where strict guidelines and interviewing processes to make sure that they where able to financially support a child and had a home to raise them in . There has been a massive increase of Asian and other foreign women since the pandemic had ended . The biggest increase have been from Chinese women . I’m wondering if the increase had to do with so many people dying from the pandemic in these countries or a shortage of good men ?
Anyway , be aware of foreign women that are desperate to get pregnant …. Tricking men into unwanted situations . I know two men that are having issues with foreign women that they thought where in love with them …. Got their girls pregnant ….. ending up in court to make the men pay child support ….. Then taking their child back to their country . To live off the man’s money . It is happening more than you think .
