Speaking of key changes, I'm a mediocre guitar player, advanced beginner (going on 20+ years) and I'm always hung up on modulations when it comes to songwriting. I've heard that the 2-5-1 jazz progression lends itself to making a smooth key change versus a harsh jump to a new tonic. or that secondary dominants can transition you to the key change, the new tonic? I tried to figure out how Pete Townshend does it but he gets too complicated sometimes for my tiny little music brain 🤪
You can use something like a 2-5-1 to more smoothly modulate to the new key, rather than just abruptly shifting. if you can use a pivot chord that's shared between both the old key and the new key, that's even better. in this way, it'll be much more "smooth" to modulate to closely related keys (nearby on the circle of 5ths) but having said that, there are tons of tricks and common patterns to gently modulate to even the most distant keys
i love this, this is great! both the song and the tutorial
thanks mate
Dude. This is the first time I've ever sang and played the accordion at the same time. Thanks.

I've been following you far longer than I've known about The Dreadnoughts. This is wild.
Your explanations are always nice, but the little asides (i.e. "so you've got a free hand to punch somebody") definitely put this one over the top
