    If you have trouble with a pencil core shattering inside, wrap it in a heating pad for about twenty minutes, let it cool and it might be as good as new. Lindsay aka the Frugal Crafter said what do we have to lose. If the core's shattered, it's unusable, anyway. I had one of my Arteza pencils do that and it was as good as new. I'm sure you've heard this before, but some newbies might not have. Like you, I love a soft pencil and love to blend with my Prismacolors. You can also use glue to attach your itty-bitty pencil nubs to the next pencil instead of tape, and sharpen right through it. Thanks so much for the tour of your collection of pencils. I"m glad to meet you!

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  3 года назад

      Hi there! Yes! I have done the heating pad on some and it worked okay. Others not - like Black Widows they don't lol. Prismas are soft enough to heat up and then if you roll them gently they should come back together, but sometimes they just don't.
      I used to glue my pencils together, but the glue gunked up in my sharpener. So, now I only sharpen to the tape line and then pull off the small piece left and throw it out. What glue were you using? It didn't dull out the blade or gunk up in the mechanism?

    It’s 2023 and I am watching this video. I am a colored pencil artist. I have a collection but mostly prismacolor which is my favorite used with solvent which turns it into paint form. I have other brands too but haven’t tried. I just bought Inktense, can’t wait to try!!!! I shop a lot in thrift stores. Found some out of production colored pencils!!!!! I want to try Derwent pencils soon. So expensive being an art enthusiast. Thanks for this video! Love ❤️ and ☮️

      I love the Derwent Artist & Procolor too! You get such clean lines with them and I find they layer really well. Glad I'm not the only one, they don't seem very popular. Although Harry from the Art Gear Guide channel likes them too. One of the best things about the Derwent Artist is the fact they come in 120 colours. I believe it's Derwent's largest range of colours.

    I, so agree with you on the Holbeins but I do love the colors. Soft white is soft opaque and crumble. I bought Lightfast reds, pink etc. Everything but the greys to fill in where I thought my Lumies were lacking. So happy Lightfast and Lumies are a perfect fit for me.

    • @ColorfullyOptimistic
      @ColorfullyOptimistic  3 года назад +2

      You know that is an excellent (and super cost savvy) way to get the best of LIghtfast and Lumis. They work crazy good together for one being predominantly oil and the other wax, but hey, why question a good thing. Yes, Holbeins are awesome, and honestly if that price tag came down I wouldn't be so harsh on them, but I guess for the price I expect a magical unicorn to fly out of the pencil and do the work for me (yet to happen, but I'm still hopeful). They are beautiful pencils though. I have yet to find a quality issue with them, and I do agree, the colors are breathtaking.

    I have been building my art supplies for a year now, I love art. I been trying to get back into drawing again. I have a total of 1222 colored pencils, and I'm going to buy the Kalour 240 set, I'm very impressed with those colored pencils. I just brought the shuttle art 180 colored pencils set, these are excellent colored pencils. I also have the 150 prisama color pencils set, I love them colored pencils. I also want to buy the Markart 120 set colored pencils, I was also impressed with those to. I have the Blick 72 set of colored pencils, only used thoes four times. So there still a new set.

      That's a lot of pencils - I have never added up my sets. I've seen a few people use the Markart and Blick, but I don't have them myself. The Kalour I'm curious about, because they look like they are manufactured by the same people that do the 180 Brutfuners and Soucolors. So I'm curious if they are the same as those. I have to do more research on them.

They got lost a couple of times in the mail and Felissimo were fantastic in kindly sending me replacements , no questions asked,. I'm in Canada so our postal can be very bad sometimes . Plus, I never told my husband that I was getting them ( not that he'd mind , but...lol) I have been doing art stuff for many years and he thinks it cool but dislikes clutter so didn't need to see more coming every month..
      I spent a long time deciding about the drawers as I loved the way Fellisimo packaged and had the little poems about each set. It seemed sad to not keep them in the cases but once you start getting 10, 20 they are taking quite a bit of room and I haven't a separate room really for keeping them.
      I can definitely share some pics with you. I'm on Facebook and you can locate me there .. my name's Mary Taylor-Lee.

    This is an amazing video, and I wish more of the people that commented reciprocated your friendliness.
    In case they are useful, I have some suggestions for pencils I’ve tried (which maybe you have already acquired throughout 2022):
    1. Posca uni pencils. Amazing smoothness, good price on amazon, limited color range.
    2. Windsor and newtown, watercolor pencils. I find them almost as soft as their colored pencils and sufficiently pigmented (for their price). They’ve just expanded their range to 48 watercolors.
    3. Uni arterase. They are slightly smoother than polys, but hold a super sharp point. Jetpens sells them open stock, but the full set is cheaper on amazon.
    4. Derwent drawing. Wish they expanded more on this line, especially considering how similar they are to Lightfast. They are incredibly water resistent too.
    5. An obscure one from ali express: qianxunwuyu, the skintone set. After speaking with the seller, they started shipping to the US. They are a dryer version of Lightfast but have pretty nice pink shades.
    6. Paul Rubens watercolor pencils: I’ve only found them on Ali Express. They are by far the softest watercolor pencil I’ve tried, almost like a neocolor. They seem to be almost a prototype, because not all colors dissolve the same, and funnily, the body of the pencil reads “palu rubens”.

I own two full 90 sets of the Tombow's and it took me a while to figure out how to use them. I like the Tombow's for their very unique selection of muted colors that I have not found in any other brand of pencil before. Their pastel color selection is impressive as they have the medium to darker pastels to choose from as well. The Tombows almost feel like an oil based core. Price-wise, per pencil, Bruts are cheaper, but that's only because I have currency conversions and shipping rates. If Felissimo were local, they'd be one heck of a budget pencil competitor, and honestly, they're smooth with amazing colors so they would be something I'd buy more of. I will also say the Felissimo are made way better than the Bruts. Very good quality - which surprised me.

      @@ColorfullyOptimistic please do. Pablo are so under rated. I heard your comments about the price on Holbein. I must agree. a few professional colorists mentioned Hot Press Water color paper for general use and after i tried it once i got heaps for future use. Something i tried with it recently was copic base color with pencil over top. due to water color paper it does drink the ink but the results are brilliant. I use Polychromos/Pablo on this paper. So much tooth. another paper type that was recommended to me was Mi-Teintes. double sided paper. 1 side is for pastel so remember that. 1 girl in Australia runs courses called Kit & Clouder recommended it. Its expensive stuff but worth it. If your on budget go Hot Press water color. 2 weeks ago i was sent a 36 set of pencils that iam swatching right now. I've been doing basic art with Prismacolors as my go-to for a good few years I used Artist's Loft before switching because they were bad pencils. I started with the 12 pack (very well loved), then the 48 pack (didnt use much from it) and i got the 132 pack. I still have the 12 and 48 pack I'm keeping for the same reason you said in the start! They could become rare in the future! Especially the 48 pack because its barely been used.
    But over these past few months I've been getting more serious about art and acquired the 24 pack of Polychromos. But they're so expensive I'd rather not spend the money for the full 120 pack at the moment.
    I have also gotten the 120 pack of Castle Art soft touch because they seemed decent and were on sale for $45 on Amazon! I also had these really cheap Royal & Lang colored pencils i got a few years ago from a bigish art set my mom got me. But they were really hardcore and seemed decent and cheap to counteract the very soft prismacolors. But also just bc I wanted really cheap colored pencils so I got a new 24 pack 😂
    But now I feel like wanting to gather all sorts of different types of colored pencils just to have but also use. Thank you for not making me feel alone in this lol!

      Yes that's why I said it must be the newer set in my comments. I tested my older one and it doesn't do it. One thing I didn't know is they've changed up the color numbers, but if they reworked the formula that makes sense why there would suddenly be issues (now I'm wondering if there are other differences between the old formulaand new). Hopefully they fix it. If I used mine more I would buy another set and test.

    That shell on all the woodless pencils I know of is very thin plastic, and it's just the kind of plastic that gets ground up very, very, very small, and ends up in your lungs and bloodstream. Plastic is not a good thing under the best of circumstances, but no one knows what long term health problems can result from having plastic particles in your lungs and blood. I really don't want to find out. Anyway, the world is drowning in plastic, and the oceans are a nightmare. I try to avoid disposable plastic, and avoid any plastic that will be reduced to particles at all costs, so I definitely avoid woodless pencils that have a plastic coating.
    Anyway, when dealing with a Walmart or Amazon brand, you can't go by price. Both companies are powerful enough to basically tell a manufacturer how much they'll pay, and they demand quality for that price. If the manufacturer doesn't go along, they can be put out of business by these immense companies. It's a pretty evil practice, but also legal, so what can you do?
    As for being light fast, many cheap brands from China have never been officially tested for light fastness. Some withstand sunlight surprisingly well, others do not. But many panic over light fastness when it isn't necessary. Just because a pencil has low, or even no, light fastness does not mean it's going to magically fade after a few years. It's all about where and how the work is dis[layed. There are paintings with almost zero light fastness that are still vibrant after four hundred years. I have Crayola drawings my kids did as long as forty years ago, and they look like they were done yesterday, even though they've been on display all this time.
    Anyway, the story is that Amazon did everything possible, including hiring experts, to duplicate Prismacolor. If this works, they are considering going after Faber-Castell and Caran d'Ache next, though that would be a few years down the road.

    My god, this video was a godsend! I was starting to feel like I had "too many" pencil sets: a total of 6 in all. I just sold two that I wasn't wild about: the Mitsubishi Uni 72 piece set, and the Staedtler 48 Karat watercolor pencils.
    I see now that I'm not the only one with an out-of-control colored pencil addiction. ❤

    watching your video now and saw the Derwent Artists from Cult Pens. yes i 2 got 2 x these sets from Cult Pens sent to Australia. HATE HATE I HATE these pencils. In fact i would go as far to say they are the worst pencils derwent retail. I got 1 set sent to me as a replacement from Derwent Australia. some reason pigment was not coming from the pencil. its like the binding agent was but no pigment. anyhow. i sold the 2nd set off cheap. The Girl from Derwent Australia showed me that these pencils are considered the lowest grade they have. below Studio. She had a chart and i said, people would think they were Artist grade going from the price at most places and the name of the pencil. nope they are below budget.

      Ah I'm sorry to hear that. Not all pencils are for everyone, but definitely sucks you bought two sets and realized you didn't like them. I do love Artists for hair and fur - they are amazing. They are definitely harder, but yes, these are a lower grade from Derwent, they are basically a student-grade in some ways, but for me, they still work.

    I had the original Black Widow set, and I found them to be of terrible quality. I gave them away, though I have bought the rest of the sets and I am impressed with the quality of them. It is too bad they would not step up the quality of the original set as I would rebuy them. BTW, great vid, gave ya a like.

      I hope that after this next set they release (supposedly this fallish?) they start to combine them all. I agree there was a quality shift between originals and Monarch. Monarch had definite changes to the formula. They were softer and easier to work with IMO.
