I used to ride one of those... what a beast! Looks pretty sketchy going up the big hill, but also looks like a lot of fun. These days, I couldn't handle the mega vibrations. Thanks.
Honda was never two stroke guy doubt they will be making em all we can do it pick up older ones an keep them going I got cr250s an 125s the 500 is next
@@1320fastback it’s easier to control the power on those monsters. If you’re running race pace, good luck. The biggest 2 stroke I’ve ridden was a cr480 bored over and the front end would lift up in 4th gear.
Aj waggnor at built 500 builds brand new cranks out of billet with tighter tolerances than the stock wrapped crank. He is who started service honda. Would love to hear you guys do a video on one of his bikes/engines
They're not any "tighter" tolerances than the stock crank. Same "tolerance's" just not the "tin" covered cranks like stock. There could've been more weight opposite the pin (which would be a good thing & should've been done) but that'd be about it. Way overpriced.
@@DislodgedTKO Had a few of them in my hands man. I build mean engines & the cranks aren't any more "true" than the standard cranks when done. So again. Bogus on the "tighter tolerance" claim.
@@DislodgedTKO Also, if 2 cranks are trued the same, the only time you'd feel any difference in vibration would be if there's a difference in balance factor. AJ had his built to the same balance factor as stock.
This. I am VERY confused right now. I think he said showa but meant kyb and it’s a kyb air fork? Who knows. I’m very confused by the KYB stickers now though. Lol.
There is a starting procedure that works well, at least for the K5. After gas is turned on lay the bike over till fuel spills out of the overflow, then mount the bike and put the bike in 3rd gear and rock it back and forth making sure the motor is turning over. Do this 3-5 times then put into neutral and with choke on kick it like you mean it. My 500AF will generally start on the 2nd kick completely cold. After the first start of the day just kick it as usual.
I want MXA to do a "Lackey" experiment. Brad lackey started in 3rd gear, and only had a 4 speed. he had a massive bottom end and rode the bike like it was an automatic. I want to see a review of that strategy on a mid 90's 500. Jeff Ward had a similar 500 strategy and it worked for him too.
3rd gear starts all day. Even up the start straight hill at mammoth. That’s what 500s do best. Set and forget. Work the clutch if your out of the pocket and just flow. Especially if you got a 500 that’s breathing some serious fire they love that gear high shit.
Dad got my 125 round Christmas 93’ and I stickered it almost identical to this. #15 of course camel supercross..pro Honda/coors light..100%..Dunlop…renthal…all from chaparral
So the Lectron is not a suitable carburetor on any of these bikes. The V-Force 3 reed is a pinch point in flow and actually causes so much turbulence that in some throttle positions it will flow substantially less than the Oem and cause a reversion back through the carb. Crankshaft wise they aren’t hard to rebuild, you can buy a new crank from AJ @ Built or from the Vintco company.
Older rider who is 6'7"... I spent alot of my life on cr500s and this one is gorgeous!! That powder white frame is so nostalgic.. I love it!!
Find one an rebuild it will be worth $ in future. Tho im a die hard 4-stroke guy myself can't beat em
Man this video is a work of art, the sound is next level and the quality is unbelievable
Long live the big bore 2 stroke
1:58 is the best sound in the world
AJ STARTED IT AND KEPT IT GOING SINCE 1997
Those old bikes vibrate soooo much. Had a 93 back in the day.
I love my 97, i feel the steel frame handles so freaking good, compared to my 500af the steely is a couch, that af vibrates like none other
My 97 vibrates less than any 250 I’ve had except my 04 YZ250.
My '96 just has a little buzz. Not much at all.
I used to ride one of those... what a beast! Looks pretty sketchy going up the big hill, but also looks like a lot of fun. These days, I couldn't handle the mega vibrations. Thanks.
Hard to ride compared to newer 450cc 4-strokes!
25yrs old Josh! That's great 👍. Stick w/ MXA an keep it GREAT 👍 💯
3:42 nailed the ink
Bro!!! is like custard! Raw sound!!!😍😍😍😍😍
I never ridden one as well but, would love o own one!
Owned 3.
A 94,88 & a 91 engine stuffed in a 2013 450 crf frame.
I miss those bikes so much! 500's & sport bikes will always be my first loves.
It would be great to hear from past legends what it was like to race and ride these bikes and how this bike compares to their factory 500.
That is a beautiful bike and a scary one a the same time!
Honda neeed to bring back the 2 strokes
All brands need to bring back 2-strokes.
@@azff true
... waiting for the 500 for 21 years now.
Bought my last Honda CR new in 1996!
Looking into future from 2022 it won't happen!
Itll never happen. Mr. Honda himself hated 2-strokes with a passion. Honda will never build a other 2-stroke.
Honda was never two stroke guy doubt they will be making em all we can do it pick up older ones an keep them going I got cr250s an 125s the 500 is next
Sounds so crispy 🔥
Super videos reviews of honda cr 500 dirt bike 2 strokes cheers guys 👍❤️
Damn is that a sweet looking bike!
OH YAAA!!!
Amazing bike and amazing video. Anyone know the music used in the intro?
I love these 500 2 strokes even though they are too much bike for us mere mortals, lol.
they are easier to ride than the smaller 2 strokes imo.
They really are not that bad but you gotta hang on

Ditto on that I would 💗 to see that as well that's pretty cool he's making CR500 Billet Cranks.👍 2 Strokes RULE 4 Strokes drool !!!!! 🤣😅😆👍👍😎

@@keithpeterson3447 billet allows tighter tolerances, istead of 1/1000" its 1/10000, for example, at 5000 rpm you feel it. Try it before you knock it

Wish I had bought a 500 before the "feeding frenzy"... thanks to the hype I'm priced out on one now!
Sold two cr500’s and one kx500. Regret it but at least I have one 94 cr500 left that’s going no where. Awesome build btw.
I have only ridden Air Cooled CR 500s and YZ 490s.
Josh you said showa forks but they have KYB stickers LOL.. was a little confusing is it a KYB with showa internals or something is that even possible?
This. I am VERY confused right now. I think he said showa but meant kyb and it’s a kyb air fork? Who knows. I’m very confused by the KYB stickers now though. Lol.
@@user-mo8tm4jw2l lol me too
This is the nostalgia king, but i would build a BRC so I could get a counter balancer. No vet wants to endure those vibes man.
Wow that bike is badass my question is how many kicks that it take for the bike to start I know that they don't start easing
Mine start in 2 kick when cold after few weeks of not using it. If hot, 1 kick and it's alive.
They aren’t as hard to start as people make it out to be.

The CR500 will do a 3rd gear start.
That is the only way to do a start on a 500! Think Top Fuel Dragster!
Raced a KX500 in 1987 and yes, 3rd gear start worked very good!

Why haven’t MXA reviewed the Stark Varg
?
Hustle go 🚶♂️ 💪 💯 👌 🙌
Showa air forks with kyb stickers?
Good catch! That was my mistake on the audio, I said Showa but it was supposed to be KYB.
They are KYB PSF1 air forks from 2013/14 CRF450R
The CR was always the better 500 imo. While the KX was undoubtedly the king in the desert the CR but just much more refined feeling while riding.
