  • Waad and Hamza al-Kateab are two Syrian refugees who risked everything to stay in Aleppo during the war. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    Waad is an award-winning film-maker, whose documentary ‘For Sama’ just won Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival.
    It tells the intimate and epic journey of her experience of war, tracking her life over five years in eastern Aleppo, including the final stages of the siege.
    Her husband Hamza is a doctor and ran a hospital in eastern Aleppo. He helped hundreds of civilians - from dealing with horrific injuries, to delivering newborn babies.
    They talk to Krishnan ahead of their film's premiere at the Sheffield Doc Fest on Saturday 8th June. It will be shown on Channel 4 and released in theatres later this year.

Until i went to another country and saw what it meana to live in a republic where you can express what u think without fearing beong tortured from the police or having to get exiled !

      @Cheikh Talib ok, first thing first. Rebels are a thing and isis and jihadists are other thing. JIHADIST ALSO ATTACKED REBELS SO THEY ARE NOT REBELS especially isis. Second the assad family ruled the country for decades. Economy was not getting any better. We were/are definitely the most closed economy in the world and the currency was losing its value even before the war since the 80s. We are not the first country to have a revolution where socialist countries back up the socialist tyrant and western countries back up rebels.

    This is an interesting interview but the problem with just saying 'If Assad fell the moderate opposition would push out the extremists and take over' is rubbish. It might be harsh but it is true to say that Syria is just too strategically important to be left to its own devices if Assad were somehow toppled. Saudi Arabia, Iran, the US, France etc would all want 'their people' in charge, the foreign fighters would pour back in and the war would just go on and on for ever.

    Lets be honest, this movie was aweosme, but it was one of the biggest propagandas Ive ever seen in my life, it doesnt give you any idea of the syrian war, it only shows the regime and russia as the bad guys, not even mentioning the united states, ISIS, the west specially france, britain, and france supporting the rebels who are mosty extremist jihadists who dont believe in a modern state where everyone can have the right to decide their beliefs, way of clothing, etc. They wanted to creat another islamic state which is close ISIS. Luckily the west failed to topple the regime, orherwise we would have another libya or Afghanistan.

      I guess this is similar to what Shamima Begum was thinking... She thought it was worth it and felt bad leaving for the refugee camp. Indeed like they said, all the countries need to take back their ISIS fighters so when Asad is removed, Syria can take care of itself

    • @MotanulFritz2008
      @MotanulFritz2008 4 года назад +9

      @@mett978You're mixing things up. Begum was a teenager with little critical thinking and decided to enter a warzone, become an Isis bride and reproduce because that's what Isis brides do. Now that she saw what war is truly like she wants to come back.
      Waad and Hamza are Syrians determined to live in their own country, whatever it takes, to defy the regime by maintaining the hospital, reporting to international press, negotiating leave etc. Yes, they chose to have children, but for completely different reasons to Begum.
      You can't be serious comparing Begum to Waad & Hamza...

    • @mett978
      @mett978 4 года назад +3

      @@MotanulFritz2008 Ultimately they were both fighting for something they believed in. They each had the chance to live in safety, but chose otherwise. Remember, there are doctors and casualties on every side - even on the side of ISIS. There are children who have no business being a part of war but are suffering and dying as a result. And there are those, also trying to document the atrocities of either side - Waad survived and hers got more attention. Asaad also still has supporters who'd probably blame the likes of Waad and Hamza for protesting and perpetuating a civil war. While they may not have had "freedom", they at least had a peace that allowed them to live a relatively normal life. The fact that Begum was just a teenager (with little critical thinking) who lived in a free and peaceful country and was convinced to give that up for ISIS and cause the deaths of 3 blameless human beings, makes her case sadder (to me anyway).
      My point is, no one is right or wrong because motive and cause are subjective - everyone believes that they're doing the right thing. For me, personally, after watching my parents' struggle during and after the Liberian civil war, I don't think the sacrifices are worth it in the long term. Waad and Begum all fled in the end looking for peace. Assad and the Russians would have done the same had they lost. Ultimately there are people hurting, suffering and dying on all sides and war is not the answer.
      Understanding, empathy, compassion and forgiveness from all sides is the way forward. Fighting because of a difference in opinion only grows more anger and hate.
      Let's cultivate a love for humanity because that really is the only thing that can save us from ourselves. ♥️

    Open letter to my mother : Sama responds to her mother :
    by Andrea Duffour*
    Dear mom, we are in 2035 and I'm 19 years old now, the age you were when you took your first political directions. I thank you for all the love that you have given me. In your film, For Sama (2019), I am the protagonist, a little baby. I cry every time I see this movie, with the atrocities you showed, you chose to touch the emotions of any normal person. But why did you make us think that it was the Syrian army that occupied Aleppo and was shooting at its own people?
    At some point in the movie, you wonder if one day I will blame you for not having left Aleppo at the beginning of this war or if I will reproach you for having left it after its liberation? I can answer you now: I blame you for both!
    I can understand your love for my dad and his group and your youthful blindness to your youthful demands for "a free Syria" - even though that the same Syria had given you excellent education and health system for free. It is normal for educated people to be critical and to have demands. (A true dictator has no interest in educating his people and would not last two months without the support of his own people.) I also can imagine that it is difficult for you to admit that you were mistaken - used, even - in view of the extent of the aggression, which our country suffered. But I am diverging; I will now answer your question.
    I reproach you for not having left East Aleppo when the Syrian and the Russian army had repeatedly proposed guarded departure corridors to all civilians in order to evacuate us from East Aleppo, occupied between 2012-2016 by terrorist gangs, the NATO and Saudi-backed mercenaries destroying it and bombarding dozens of hospitals, the same terrorists who, at the beginning of the few peaceful demonstrations - demonstrations as exist in all the democratic countries of the world, - fired on civilians and policemen with snipers and the aim of provoking international uproar by accusing my government of firing on its own people!

    I also criticize your departure abroad when our government with our army had liberated our city, when hundreds of thousands of Syrians sang in the street and returned from abroad. What did they offer you out there to betray your country? Quite simply, I reproach you for the defamation of my country when you became complicit and joined the wail of European [propaganda] sirens in order to prolong this dirty war and to justify "sanctions" against my people. Sanctions that will affect every child, every individual, every day. Sanctions that will affect people who've never attacked anyone.
    Mom, I'm still Sama, which means "the sky"; your daughter, who loves freedom, who wants the sovereignty for my beloved Syria. I blame you for using me to make war-propaganda against my own country, for having repeated all the lies about false flag attacks and I now propose you join me, your daughter, and the immense majority of the population who are proud of their country's army and their government and who lost tens of thousands of young people freeing us from this imperialist-zionist attack.

    Mom, I also suggest that you make another movie with your 500 hours of rush. This time letting Syrian people put comments on it instead of your European financiers: Your material is precious and for this I am grateful.
    I am also grateful that you have given me the freedom to return to my country to discover it with my own eyes and I thank you first and foremost for allowing me to express myself.
    Aleppo, January 2035,
    Your daughter, Sama
