  • As a big fan of David Draiman's vocals, it's no shocker (to me) that Disturbed's "Bad Man" is nominated for "Best Metal Performance" at the upcoming 66th Grammy Awards! In my opinion, this is a very powerful Grammy contender. But how will it stack up to its competition?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Disturbed performing "Bad Man" for the first time.

Totally agree. I also recommend the band Plush, who are on tour with Disturbed at he moment, Plush's lead singer, Moriah Formica, is standing in for Ann Wilson. She is a perfect person to do this, almost an Ann Wilson clone. Check out Plush's song "Run", or even their cover of "Barracuda", both of their "Find The Beautiful" EP.

I particularly note that given the context of the lyrics, Dan Donegan’s guitar solo is almost certainly meant to evoke the sound of screaming, and it does so powerfully and (appropriately) disturbingly.

Re: losing David's vocals under the instruments sometimes: it *is* perhaps a little unfair to everyone else that David Draiman AND Dan Donegan are in the same band. It takes a pretty incredible guitarist to shove David to the back and it takes a pretty amazing vocalist to shove Dan to the back. And yet, here we are.

When speaking specifically about songs like this in regards to awards like the Grammys, songs like this need so much more attention because not only is it's message very resonant today, but it can easily apply to many people and situations throughout history, and will be able to apply to many more people and situations in the future. Such a strong message. The Grammys just want to award all the popular stuff that plays on the radio. So much good music completely ignored that should be getting these awards.

    ✅ Multiple vocalists
    ✅ Time/tempo shifts
    ✅ Progressive

I think Oblivion would be a great first song, it balances all three voices very well, and I love how Brent's tone channels Layne Staley RIP. There are some good live performances on here, and the official music video has a cool Sch-Fi motif.

The song originated with guitarist Dan Donegan's riff, then David Draiman improvised the lyrics, which are heavily influenced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Russians were invading Ukraine as Disturbed were writing the song, so Draiman felt it appropriate that they highlight innocents at the mercy of a bad man.

PLEASE cover the song "Don't Tell Me" Single was not released in time for Grammy nom, but it is AMAZING. It features the iconic Ann Wilson of Heart. She has done duets in the past, NONE of the male vocals have been strong enough for Ann Wilson's voice. Ann with David Draimon...WOW. It's a softer song, not as METAL as "Bad Man," but that song is EPIC! While this song was written before the war in Isreal and the Palastines, I'm sure when he sings it now, his thoughts are on the horrific actions by terriosts trying to commite genocide of his people. In an interview he said his parents were over there. Not sure if they live there or were visiting, but she were close to the attacks. This can also be applied to the war that has is happening inside our own country. The HATE and horrible deaths in the name of HATE and acts of treason commited by a mob on the United States Capital building. With that, and the devastation done by Putin to not only the Ukraine and it's people, but to his own people. I have friends that have people in Russia. Human beings are the only species that has war...Power and greed. I love a lot of different music, but I think I was attracted to hard rock and metal because so much of it, tells the TRUTH. Back when the flower children were writing songs of peace (which I also like), the Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath came out and we had War Pigs and other songs about the truth of war and the evil in the world. David Draiman and Disturbed are so tuned into what is WRONG with this world, and always have a strong message. Because of that, Disturbed is really one of the only bands in the past few decaded that I feel a strong connectiion to...When I heard this song, I felt like it was a "part two" to their song "Liberate", which I play A LOT when I hear a certain man sprew his hate and evil...and FAKE NEWS.

Start with DEATH BLOOMS (the full version) and NOTHING TO GEIN, but you also have to at listen to -1. Please, name your price!!!

I just realized something. Ghost's nominated track is an Iron Maiden cover. Specifically a Paul Di'Anno as vocalist track. I think it would be much more tasteful to do the original track rather than Ghost's cover. Or better yet. Do both versions. I think the Grammys picked that track because Ghost did it and Ghost do big business. (The Grammys have a weird habbit of picking bands doing covers, whether they are big hits or not). I like Ghost, but a Paul Di'Anno reaction is long overdue.

That "screeching" in the guitar sounds influenced by Tom Morello and his ability to make some many different sounds from his instrument.

13:38 not just a push of air, he’s beginning many lines with false cord engagement. Very dark rasp to start and set the tone and then he goes lighter towards the end of the line

The other lack of respect to metal is that they are almost never asked to perform on talk shows. Disturbed was one of the few but it was on a more mellow song. You should also put the group “Nothing More” on your list. The writing, instrumentations and vocals are superb.

For some juxtaposition you HAVE TO listen to Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season.” His vocals are amazing and his lyrics are even more so. (By-the-way can’t wait to see Disturbed soon at Mohegan Sun!!)

Oh, innocents always have to die by Joker’s hand!
    No, I will never understand…
…why you don’t kill that wicked man.
They’re all dead because you are weak, Batman!🎵

Dear Elisabeth since you are opera singer would you ever considered sharing your thoughts with us about one of the greatest wagnerian sopranos late ms Jessie Norman ,Im 50 now but have heard her unforgetable voice when I was only ten .When you choose opera singer to introduce to wider audience I think she deserves to be among first on your list. I have hearrd lot of voices because I myself was aspiring mezzo but choose univesity career over singing. But I have never heard operatic voice so versatile and rich in colour as her`s. Her interpretation of Isolda blew me away as ten year old child .World lost a lot with her death at 75 tree years ago. What I would propose is lesser known among the people who is not in the world of classical music, Her inrpretation of Shubert`s Erlkonig .If you read my comment take this true gem into consideration. Hope you will read this

You should listen to Disturbed’s cover of “Follow the yellow brick road”.
The way they make you feel like you are standing right next to Judy Garland on your way to see the Wizard of Oz is unbelievable…
Yeah I’m just joking around 😂 Although it would be hilarious to hear them cover that song just like this 🤣🤣🤣

9:27 That "Y'ALL" melted my heart. I'm not a typical southerner as my religous beliefs, political views, hobbies and interests often vastly differ from the "good ole boy southern ways". But that "Y'ALL" was so adorable!
Anyway, I love and enjoy your content! Keep it up!!

if you could listen to a song by my chemical romance I’m sure you would enjoy their music! Gerard’s voice can change from raspy to clean quickly and he often uses fun singing techniques which makes his voice one of a kind! the music is great and the band plays amazingly! I would suggest “mama” because his voice is absolutely AMAZING and unique to the way he sings in that song, the song is emotional and may have you in tears! anything by my chemical romance is amazing! hope one day you post a video of your reaction if you do!!!

Dear Elizabeth -if I may- , have you ever considered reviewing Tom Waits '' God's away on business'' or maybe Cesaria Evora'' Negue''. On a more commercial note; Celine Dion and Ginette Reno singing'' Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin'' Would bring you a nice surprise. Stephane.

On your subject of sibilance earlier in the video, I'm not sure if you already knew this but those headphones that you use are well known to have a significant treble spike around 8khz that tends to emphasize vocal sibilance. There are lots of discussions of it online and some people don't mind it, but others use eq or even passive filters with them to tame it. Some have even returned the headphones. So you may be noticing sibilance a lot more than the average person lol. Most Beyerdynamic headphones have bright tuning. I mostly use Sennheiser HD600's, and I hardly notice sibilance in anything unless it's bad.

    May I humbly suggest:
Elbow - Loneliness of a tower crane driver (Live at Abbey Road BBC)
... because Guy Garvey's voice is phenomenal and so alike to Peter Gabriel
    Speaking of P:
    Peter Gabriel - Father Son
... if you are not close to tears by the end of it, you're doing it wrong. Oh my, goosebumps.
Spandau Ballet - Through the barricades
One of the most forgotten and underrated hymns of the 80s, yet so much complex beauty in it.
    Please?

You really need to do a deep dive on the band "Imminence". Their lead Eddie Berg is a vocal masterpiece. His lows and high are so beautiful. For a first pick, I'd highly recommend "Erase". They are a younger band, but I strongly feel that they will be huge! Please consider it.

The lyric "I will never understand why these cowards bow to your demands", respectfully, is indeed bowing or at least represents a weak form of dismissal. It is not actually very difficult to understand why anyone would bow to a tyrant. To refer to such people as "cowards" is disproportionate.
Any highly trained military operative can explain pain submission to you in simple terms. Generally this is the basis for why anyone would submit to a tyrant. Not specifically as a result of physical interaction involving the application of pain to overpower the subject's will, but rather by actively exploiting the weakness or needs of the subject the operator may easily control the subject. Philosophically this extends into minimal action on the part of the operator via effectively manipulating the beliefs, fears or wants of the subject.
Suppression of the capacity to _thrive_ is an effective tool for establishing submission of a mass populous. For all practical purposes no one actually expects to _survive_. Technically the bar for survival is very, very low and can involve significant discomfort. Extended torture includes the goal of punishing a subject without ending their life, thus technically allowing the subject to survive, though the mass populous has come to take notions of survival for granted. Generally we have all been taught that the goal in life is to thrive. When that goal is made unreasonably difficult with all of the technology and potential plainly in view, the beliefs of a population can easily be manipulated into the next best option to struggling, which is to invent reasons to blame someone outside of that tribal group for the problems of the identified group and proceed to "take back" what one feels one is "owed". This is what most often leads to war - failures of logistics, diplomacy and leadership, more so than corruption or greed technically. The blame and accountability of the outside group is merely amplified or invented entirely in order to minimize the overall failure rather than promote the more difficult option of understanding and resolving the technical issues which are suppressing the capacity of the population to thrive.

Not to mistake or dismiss the fact that corruption and greed are their own issues that must also be handled appropriately.
