- I think I speak for all of us when I say sometimes we have leftover sardines, hardboiled eggs, and mashed potatoes hanging around and are flummoxed on what to do. Well fret not lest ye be fretted for Florence A. Cowels, author of 1936’s 1,001 Sandwich has the answer! It’s the Sardine Loaf Sandwich. Yay.

“It’s still not something I want to eat, um… ever again.” 😂
This sandwich makes sense if you remember that 1936 was during the Great Depression. A lot of recipes of that era came from using what was available.
I love your shirt too! ❤
Your end of year list should include a top 5 best fish sandwiches
The one time a sandwich desperately needed mayo as a binder, they use mashed potato. Go figure!
Absolutely flabbergasted your plus up was not the trashcan on this one
“Clearly i don’t have a problem with sardines” lol
I love this string of bizarre boys you've been making this week.
Fry it as a croquette and add horseradish mayonnaise.
That would be delicious!
Or just spread the bread with that
I feel like you could remix this, using mashed potato and sardines as the base with an egg as the binder to make fish cakes. Fry those up and put it on a sandwich!
IKR?
I was thinking the same thing! This would make a great fried cake.
Heres my plus up: I would have fried up a few slices in a little butter until crispy, and added a well seasoned slice tomato and a leaf of lettuce.
That shirt for the win. Barry, finishing out the work week stong
I suggest a recipe remix. Potatoes, eggs, and sardines together have some possibilities.
Now this is a channel I can get behind. Glad the algorithm found it.
Welcome! You have a huge backlog of really great sandwiches to watch now. hehe. Barry is great :)
Barry you need to find an Anchovy shirt. I like anchovies so this one I would eat if someone presented it to me....would I make this ??? No, but I had fun watching you eat it. My plus up would be a slice of tomato.
This is Barry when he’s looking at recipe books from the early 1900’s: “Does it have sardines?”
Better and healthier ways to enjoy the mighty little sardine out there.
I LOVE SARDINES!!!!!!!!!!
Such a fun shirt😃! Watched this video again because I had ideas. Mashed potato, raw egg for binding, sardines & seasonings of choice. Chill for like 30 minutes, coat in bread crumbs and fry to golden brown. Soft bread, sardine "loaf" patty, and hot sauce could possibly work as a sandwich. It might be nap inducing, but it might taste pretty good🤷♀😆.
I share your enthusiasm. I would make the "loaf", dip in egg, roll in bread crumbs and fry in my cast iron, then hot sauce, pickled shallots and crispy lettuce on a potato roll.
Seems like it needs texture. Onions, celery, etc. or even just toasted bread. Also a little spice/heat couldn't hurt.
pickles! some kinda pickles!... lemon juice and black pepper, hmmm...
Wow! 1001 sandwiches from 1936. That was a good year for sandwiches. Nice 😃
I love sardines and sardine sandwiches!
I keep coming back to this channel, and now all I can think is that I want a Club Sandwich.
I would've needed some sort of texture in this one. I'd plus it up with some Old Bay potato chips.
When I was little, a classmate showed me how to put potato chips in a sandwich and I've been doing it ever since - decades later. 👍
Cool shirt with the fish! 🐠
Thanks!
I sure thought that there would be breading and frying involved here.Oh well.Remember folks, don't let your sardine loaf!
The Shirt! Well played sir
Good episode!
That shirt is AMAZING, oh my goodness. The sandwich, not so much, lol.
It actually sounds pretty good, without the eggs since I can't stand hard boiled eggs. Maybe extra chopped onion. People in my family often made tuna or salmon patties with mashed potato and I've seen other fish recipes like that, so this isn't too much of a stretch.
Can’t wait to get my hands on your book
Fry that sardine patty in oil and eat it hot. Yum.
Thank you
Awesome shirt love sardines 🐟❤️🤘
I’ve decided you have an iron gut!😂❤
need that sardine shirt
That shirt slaps. Of course you own one.
😮 hope fun shirt friday is a new tradition. That’s an insanely sick buttondown
Love your shirt! Love sardines! Not too sure about this sandwich though. (Has Matthew at Canned Fish Files seen your shirt ? 😁)
That shirt. Holy moly
Barry got the drip
Great shirt!
Oh my! Great video but frightening sandwich!!!
Might frying the slices of the loaf in butter, a bit like 'bubble and squeak' improve it?
Sardine Loaf is the perfect opposite of “cellar door”
Interesting video though I couldn't hear anything over that shirt. lol Very entertaining as usual.
Thx for another Great video , made ham salad an hr ago for sandwichs so although i would try yours i'm going to forgo puking just when i wanted to fall asleep on the couch watching tv an have the ham salad instead the flavours should have melded by now 🙂
I love your channel! This sandwich looked gross! Keep up the good work!
Heh, "fresh" on a sardine shirt... thanks Barry.
Shoulda been a womp womp womp waaaahhhh at the end!
Your shirt! ❤
what a name
I imagine a good way to plus this up would’ve been to pan fry the loaf slices.
What was that like 1/48th of a teaspoon of Mayo? 😂😂
Cool shirt
nice shirt
Not even if I were starving
Days Since Barry Forgot to Hit Record: 0
This sounds like something that could work better as a hot sandwich, in both ways. Hit it with some Tabasco, toss it in the toaster oven. Get some bright spice. Add some texture that this seems like it would be sorely lacking.
Might have to give that a go myself.
Think this one is a contender for the "Worst of 2024 list". PU was still a good idea. Love the shirt!
Where did you get that shirt!? I need it for my dad 😂

Lotta sardines, lately!
lmao the shirt reveal
the thumbnail for this one had me thinking "oh no..." on account of how monochromatic and colorless a sandwich filling it was. not surprised to see it wasn't a particularly good sandwich.
Please drop the link to the sardine shirt!!!

BARRY’S SARDINE SHIRT IS BRAT
Yeaaahh...I don't think I can do that one, Barry. That kind of a 'filling' really should've been rolled in Panko and fried. Except.....not made with Sardines. I wonder if any other kind of protein would make this recipe more interesting? I know it'd remove sardines from a sardine loaf, but the preparation was at least....different.
That shirt though
Maybe a slice of tomato would have helped
Just visually the measured amount of salt looked like way too much. I'm sure that's what the recipe said, but yikes.
I agree with what someone else suggested: frying the sardine loaf might work. Maybe leave out the hard cooked eggs, but dip slices of chilled loaf in egg then crumbs, shallow fry. Serve maybe on a burger bun with lettuce and... cocktail sauce (?)...
It feels alot like a meal put between bread for eating convenience. Like sitting at the construction site with one cleanish hand chowing calories before going back to work.
Well... If you pan fried the sardine loaf, put it on some wheat bread with lettuce and tomato and mayonnaise- it could be good.
I'm about 10 seconds in and I already know this would be a +2 with a liberal dose of Tajin.
And the plus up was pretty similar, lemon and pepper. Tajin is my hammer of late to my various metaphorical nails.
At least it's not anchovies
just dip it in vinegar and peanuts, 10/10 guaranteed
Hmmm.... Anything with "loaf" in the title, gotta question.
Spiced sardines in tomato sauce doesn't need much else to make a good sandwich. Mayo, lettuce, maybe pickled onions and jalapeños.
People of the past overthought this.
My feeling is that any non-bread "loaf" is dubious from the start.
At least it wasn't anchovy paste! lol
RIght?!
I am scared and only just started the video
Barry please i need to know where you go that shirt from please?! google is being useless

@@SandwichesofHistory what a legend
Im so sorry you did this to yourself for us
"Eh...."
I felt that in my soul. This sandwich is a big no from me.
Would it help to have fried it? A crispy potato cake of sorts... Still fish though 🤢
Can you for once make a normal sandwich? Like a PBJ with Bacon on rye?
"PBJ with Bacon on rye" = normal 😂
@@SandwichesofHistory ....what? Lol
That shirt would be better off as a shower curtain. Sorry Barry.
Why so many fish sandwiches lately? :(
Some things should not come in loaves
It is…better😂
fry that loaf up
Begs the question of what came first...the shirt or the sandwich? And will you ever have occasion to wear that shirt again?
enough fish, fish don't belong on a sandwich. please no fish tomorrow
Oh you are gonna love tomorrow then...
nah dog
