Makloub (Tunisia) on Sandwiches of History

- For International Sandwich Sunday we are heading to Tunisia for a street sandwich that sounds pretty interesting. To make it, I’ve got to make Msemen, a kind of flatbread, Slata Mechouia, which is a salad of sorts made from grilled vegetables, and breaded fried chicken. You’ll forgive me for not making the harissa because it that was already a lot of work. Still, this turned out to be one amazingly delicious sandwich.

I have learned from watching these that the sandwiches that require the most work are often the best.
Dear god - I am born again. That looks fantastic.
After approximately the 73rd flavor element was added, I figured there would not be a plus-up.
THE SHORTTSSSSS!!
I was wondering what happened to this channel! Dang YT was not suggesting it anymore and somehow, watching food history videos I thought of it and know I was subscribed. Glad to find it again, it's raining where I am and off to binge the videos I've missed. Greetings from a food and history enthusiast all the way in Honduras y
This may be the best looking sandwich I've seen you prepare Barry!Yeah it's a LOT of work but sure looks to be worth it.Yum.
I had a friend from Morocco, who made a very similar sarny for my GF and I when we were over at he and his wife's place. It was called a "Khobz," he made it using store bought Pita, but everything else, he and his wife made from scratch. Phenomenal! It had me making knockoff Pita wraps for years, using a variety of wrong but inspired ingredients from the Asian markets in my home town.
seriously though..... this looks incredible. 10 out of 10.
Went all out on this one! Hey, the sandwich life ain't always easy. Thanks Barry.
The only time I had "Mediterranean" food was at a Time-Out deli, I think it was a gyro or kebab or... you know. I didn't like sauce, I'm not sure, it might have been tzatziki? It was especially sour. Mayo would have been more to my taste.
I find it amusing how there seem to be at least 5,000 names for the same flatbread/meat/veg concoction from that area of the world.
It really does look delicious!
Goes up to 11. That looks delicious. I want one.
Watching you make the bread, I thought I’d accidentally clicked onto an origami demo! Seriously, though, this looks fantastic.
Outstanding!!
During the video I was wondering "how the heck is Barry going to plus this up?".
The answer is: you don’t
I'm trying to broaden my palette, but one of the foods that continues to vex me is ricotta and similar cheeses. Sandwiches like these make me want to keep climbing that hill.
That looks like an amazing sandwich. If I had leftover cutlets and some pita or Naan bread. I think you could through this together without too much work
Holy effort sandwich Batman! This one looks excellent 👍🏻
Online this channel so much I watch the ads after to give them those fractions of a cent hahahaha.
Given the effort glad it was tasty!
Finally someone who knows how to cook good sandwiches, I just watched a video of someone commit atrocities to a sandwich
Stay tuned, some of the old recipes have me commit atrocities all the time. lol
@@SandwichesofHistory its not nearly as bad as what I saw
It had to be good after all that work, I would have liked
to taste the bread on its own
"Sorry Tunisia." LOL - This was a busy Father's Day concoction, Barry. But beautifully executed! And no plus-up!
Haha yeah he did us dirty , the bread should be round more like a pizza form to be able to fold it , but he did his best .
Good work Barry
10! 10! 10! 10! Oh YUM!!!
Looks like one of the most delicious sandwiches in quite a while. Yum!
It's a 10!!!!!!
"Sorry tunisia" it's ok lmao we're not italians 😂
For the msemmen i have actually never seen it done with butter and rather with olive oil on each folded layer, and there's 4 to 6 layers from what i'm used to(think croissant for the fluffy result) all in all looks great hope u enjoyed it.
It's called MLEWI 🚨
It may be a ten without a plus up but I can bet I’ll never make it. Too lazy here. ☺️ Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm really taken with the idea of that roasted vegetable condiment. I think that will be good on a lot of things.
Looks solid! A squeeze of lemon and some lemon zest would be my one and only plus up.
I knew while watching you go through the long process of making it that it was bound to be delicious!! I wish somewhere around me sold them, I'd buy it in a shot. (surprised at the amount of oil and fat in the Msemen, though!!) Thanks, Barry, for going to the trouble! (that was a lot of harissa that you used, if I used a similar amount of the kind that I have it would probably blow my head off🤯)
other tunisian sandwich i recommand as a tunisian :
fricassé
That one is quite tasty too ruclips.net/video/LAiH6jYHOoY/видео.html
This is a perfect sandwich
I appreciate your dedication to making the right kind of bread but honestly, I would just find a flat bread that's close. That roasted "salsa" would keep in the fridge for a while I bet
Thank you
Were you using Aleppo peppers? Looked like it but I wasn't sure. They're popular in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine. If not, that's what I would use and not bell peppers.
"There is no recipe, really..." - Marco Pierre White
All the elements of delicious, dense and flavorful, not to mention - *Tunisian croissant! Now go tell vegetarians, and the zero fat folks that Tunisians live very long lives! Truth is, truly, relative. Thanks Barry.
Haha I noticed the croissant similarity too.
😂 kinda looks like a grease sandwich to me. And way too much work also😮
That’s a lot of steps. What a masterpiece. ❤
I got a question for you Barry. You always end your videos saying whether or not you’d make the sandwich again but since you make a new sandwich every day how often do you actually remake say a typical 6-7 sandwich?
Good question. I usually say "I would" or "I will" to indicate future intent. It's also a way to underscore that the sandwich is tasty enough make again. But you're correct, I am making new ones everyday. The only one I've made a couple times again is The Tomato from Turkey and the Wolf in New Orleans. That said, I am keep track of data on each vid including weather I would make it again.
@@SandwichesofHistorythank you! I’ll have to listen more closely for the would/will distinction.
I was wondering if you thought the bread was worth the time to make, or would the sandwich be almost as good with a regular soft flatbread. Thanks!
Hell yes! Now that is a sandwich to write home about. Hope to try it someday!
The bread should be round more like a pizza form to be able to fold it , but GOOD WORK
I'd have just used both pieces of the flat bread (one on the top, one on the bottom) and made a bigger sandwich. Meal for two! 😊
Did he rate it though??? I didn't hear a rating
sorry, it was a 10
That took some making; at least you didn’t have to push a hard boiled egg yolk through a sieve. 😅
WOOHOO!!! FIRST!!!
don't worry about what they think in the Ew Kay
Day 56 of asking Barry to make the sandwich I submitted!~~
I love international sandwich sunday! This looks awesome. Thanks Barry!
🤤
Wow, I’m inspired
First sandwich you've made that has me salivating. We love that harissa brand too.
i'm gonna guess a 9 or 10
mmmm
I see you made a yeasted dough, but when did you give it time to rise and ferment? Hence the thin flat Makloub…
Yep, I followed instructions and that part definitely seemed off.
So what's your score out of 10? You didn't put it in the video. YOU HAD ONE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will it make The Book!!??❤❤❤❤❤
Alas, not this first one as it's gone to print already.
42 steps later, I thought I was watching America's test kitchen. Lol
Bocadillio apparently Spanish inspired Moroccan sandwich. I reckon you’ll love it!
Do you mean bocadillo? Its how we call sandwiches that use bar bread (or similars) in spain
A definite 10! Might be easier to make if you used jarred "fire roasted" salsa and pan toasted flat pita bread. Just watched two videos on this sandwich. Both make a pizza like dough and cooked spiced cubes of chicken in a pan. I'd go this way as I don't like having to do the whole breading thing.
Wow, what a flavour bomb! 🥪💣Seems like it's already been plussed up a few times over the course of history.
Just a super-quick-and-easy recipe for when you're on the go!
😂
That looks outstanding. I would eat that anytime.
Wow! This sandwich sounds incredible!! Fun to watch you make it, too.
Should have plussed it up with some seashells. Semolina loves the seashells.
That looks amazing! Now i need to find someone to make me one 😁
What a pretty sandwich, sounds good too
Well as a Tunisian, What you made is not a makloub but Melawi sandwich as the bread is more or like Melawi bread which is similar to msemen bread.
