  • This video is something that I wish didn't happen. Unfortunately, Mercedes has electrical issues that haven't been fixed. I thought that my blower regulator had gone out again but it was actually a melted fuse holder for the blower that became the problem with my AC.

    Note: this was a recall on the S500 for the 2000 model. Why is it still happening on the 04 and above? This video shows you how I fixed my melted fuse box issue for a few bucks if that.

    Peter hi there. great video here too and our conversation regarding you tracing an issue with the AC blower to the regulator replacement is what brings me here.
    I followed your steps one by one on the other video, but no dice. Looking back it's entirely possible the blower and regulator were fine to start with. But, we bought new ones and that can't really hurt.
    The problem for me turned out to be the Red/Yellow wire at the fusebox was fried. It was corroded at the juncture with the black plastic piece connecting both red/yellow wires AND both ends over an inch long on both sides of that plastic piece were fried.
    I'm not an electrician, in fact I'm barely a driveway mechanic, but what we did was just cut the wire above each of the fried parts, stripped the wires on both ends, and wrapped them together(just to see if I was on to something) then covered in electrical tape. Wouldn't you know it, it worked. The fan came on immediately when turning the key. Problem solved - now just need to wrap the connected copper wires better than twist and tape. Thank you sir for at least showing me where to start looking. A thousand thumbs up for you.

      Awesome. See if you can use a clamp to route a fuse next to the blower regulator. I'm sure you can figure it out. I told you, these models are known to have faulty fuse holders. I'm so glad it helped. Cheers. Thank you for watching and subscribing.

    Okay I got it out and have diagnosed using those directions and also from a Forum I was reading. looks like mine had the original heat/resistance problem that caused the fuse housing to melt. However combining the two problems (speculation) I think what this comes from is a bad blower refusing to spin as it's reaching the end of its life cycle causing the resistance/heat problem in the fuse box. So signs of a bad blower going out could be what caused the fuse box problem. And by bypassing the fuse box problem made the problem in the actual blower appear. That is my best guess after weeks of toying with this reading up on it and now working on it a third time. I have a used blower motor that's better than mine hopefully this one works. will update.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  7 лет назад +1

      Daniel Carey possibly yes. the only question I have is that if the fuse issue was removed to begin with, then even the blower reaching it's end of life Shouldn't create enough resistance to melt the fuse housing regardless if the blower did in fact create the issue. the rating of the wire should prevent that from happening. but.. the regulator can fail prematurely if the resistance of the wire is high which was the case of the fuse housing. I've yet to see a blower motor fail from having high resistance on the feed wire. but I can completely see the issue of a regulator burning up with high resistance from the fuse. Remember, the regulator is between the source (fuse) and blower so the regulator will suffer before the motor. hopefully you figure it out. let me know. cheers.

    I just watched your video. Excellent video, by the way! So, I looked up recalls for the 2001 Mercedes S500 and it has been on recall since 2004. I don't think that they did the job as well as you did because all they do is replace the fuse holder. I smelled burning plastic, stopped the car, lifted the hood but could find nothing - I figured that I would find out, eventually, what it was. Shortly after, I heard a weird sound, almost like a fan scraping something and then my fan quit.
    The HVAC blower motor may lose power because the fuse for the circuit may lose contact. This is due to a flaw in the plastic holder that secures the fuse that protects this circuit. If the fan stops working, you may not be able to clear fog and frost off of your windshield. If visibility is reduced, you could be at risk of getting into an accident. Dealers will install new blower motor fuse holders. This recall began during October 2004. The Mercedes-Benz recall number is 2004 070010.

      Jay Kay thank you for watching. yes unfortunately, mercedes never really fixed the issue. I would think that they knew the sam units weren't good on the 01 models but it seems like they used the same ones for the newer models. regardless, problem fixed. thanks again.

    put the other fan in and so far it's working. So looks like regulator is fine and our fuse problem is fine. I'll update if it fails but keeping my fingers crossed.

  • @MK-ge2mh

    This is almost the exact problem that I have with my 2006 S350! The 40A fuse is melted the same way and broke apart the same way. However, from the 4-pin DIN, I get the variable voltage correctly from the fan signal line, but not the +12V.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  3 года назад +1

      Yep. So you will need to fix that fuse problem as that is the main 12 volt constant power.

    • @MK-ge2mh
      @MK-ge2mh 3 года назад

      @@PeterZafra Is the lack of the +12V power due to a problem with the center console? When I run the test (holding REST + filter), it indicates all dashes (no error code). If it is a problem with the center console, can I just run +12V power like you did in your video?

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  4 года назад +2

      It could be grounded. Lift the carpet out like i did on this video and make sure there's no water anywhere. Also, there's a fuse box under the chair of the passenger side rear seat which you can access from the kick panel of the seat. Make sure that's all dry. If they washed the engine as well, make sure the SAM unit is dry. Open up all the fuse block covers and let them dry. Basically, detailer used too much water and it created a ground. Hopefully you guys fix it. Cheers

      Make sure your main line going to the 40 amp fuse isn't bad or melter as this will cause fluctuating voltage since there's a breach in the wire from the fuse.

    Blower stopped working, will diagnose again using same steps. Is yours still working properly? I read another possible problem is bad ground wire? (the brown wire in plug assembly) I do have a tiny light bulb out on my climate control. the switch that controls up and down for temperature on passenger side is not lighting up anymore. Could this be a short or the cause? your fix worked great for a while but then we had a big snowstorm here. And it just didn't blow on a really cold day. Hasn't worked since. I check my reed valve regularly and also took out the footplate to verify there was no water damage. And was dry in both areas. The fuse still looks good. Any ideas?

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  7 лет назад

      Daniel Carey mine is working great. you might want to check the power and make sure it's live to the blower regulator. of that's good, unplug the blower from the regulator and put a volt meter to it and make sure that there's power coming out of the regulator to rule out the blower as an issue. if there's power then it might be the blower. if there's no power, it might be the regulator itself.

      Hi. Yes. The wiring on these. Are weren't done well in my opinion. The regulators create so much resistance that it causes these wires and fuse connectors to melt and fail. That is why I made this video because the wiring simply wasn't good enough. I can't believe there was no recall for these terrible wiring. You might just have to reqire and run a thicker gauge wire yourself like what I did on this video. Until today, it still works very well for me.

I think some of these fuses aren't seated properly and from that it causes resistance which in turn create so much heat that it melts the fuse holder and fuse. It's just a poor design in my opinion. I hope you figure out the issue and not have to deal with it anymore. Cheers

    Okay attempting this with my brother. what did you solder the live positive wire to?

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  7 лет назад

      Daniel Carey i soldered it to the red yellow wire that goes to the blower regulator.

    hey man I did this without disconnecting the battery as well and the the blower motor is working great pretty much used everything you used. however now I'm getting in SRS and pre-safe unavailable in-dash. I looked it up and it's a common sensor problem in the passenger seat so it could just be the seat sensor acting up, however I figured it would be worth asking if you had any dash light problems after you performed this? I did have a person in the passenger seat. I would like to repeat my blower motor is working great maybe even better than before so thanks on that.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  7 лет назад +1

      Daniel Carey hey Daniel. that was caused because you had a little body weight on the passenger side Chair while working on the blower area. turn off the car and without anyone on the chair start the car. the sensors need to reset itself because it was an uneven weight distribution and it's meant to work for child safety with children using car seats. hope it solves itself. I'm really glad you fixed your car. cheers!!!!

    Hey Peter are you located in the States? I could really use your expertise in helping me fix my ac blower issue with it working for a while then fan stops working. If it’s running and I turn the speed up, the fan will shut off. I have a w215 02 CL55 which is basically an S class coupe.

      +Cary Colome It's going strong. The regulators aren't even heating up. Check your fuse. It might be causing resistance and causing the regulator to heat up. I have a feeling you have the same issue I had. Good luck.

    Will blown fuses in this area cause the car not to crank/start and will it cause the gear lever to be stuck in park?

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  3 года назад +1

      I wouldn't eliminate that issue but highly unlikely. I think that's more of a communication issue between the key fob and the ignition. Try cleaning your key fob. Sometimes lint gets in there and prevents the key from communicating with the ignition. I made a video of that as well. Best wishes. Cheers.

    Somebody probably didn't take your car to the dealership to get it fixed when the recall is put out and they just continued about their day like it was nothing because the problem didn't show up to me go out and get a new fuse box off eBay or RockAuto parts and on that new part it will probably not have that problem because the new parts are post recall and are probably fixed of that issue

I am wondering what state are you in? I loved to pay you if your local?
    Thanks!😇

      Hi. What happens when battery gets low is that computer needs to be reset to "wake up" the sensors and computer features to have command unit communicate again. I know its a pain and i also love mbz but sometimes i wish it was as easy as a Toyota. Haha. I'm in California amd if you are near enough, i would check it out for free just to help out. Cheers

    Your fuse box is not the issue it's the blower motor that's shorted. Fuses don't pop just because.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  6 лет назад

      Ricardo Remodeling fyi...the fuse never blew. It melted. It was a recall on w220 from the early 2000 but it became an issue with 04 as well.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  6 лет назад +1

      +Ricardo Remodeling not in my case. You are right about the recall. But a lot of these years still had Sam unit issues. Sucks but what I did totally fixed my issues. The fan is great with no resistance. The issues from previous years was the drain from wiper area was getting clogged and was causing the water to drip to the fan causing corrosion and short. Glad you were able to fix yours. This definitely fixed my issue. Cheers.
