Goes to show that you can’t always speak for other people. If you want to fail, that’s on you. But don't try to take other people down with you. If sketch didn’t speak up, I think everybody would’ve walked out.
But the rest of them didn't have any interest in failing the class. So they decided to leave Rita to fend for herself
One student should not have to get her classmates to boycott the class with her.
This Was A Lesson To Remind The Students To Not Forget Where They Come From And To Not Forget Where They Could End Up
Sketch low-key wasn't with it. When everybody was getting up. He the only one that stayed in his sit, shaking his head.
But the rest of class were smart enough to stay put and they needed the grades - Tyler’s parents wouldn’t be pleased and Sketch has a job etc.
It’s like Mary Clarence told them - if you wanna be somebody and you wanna go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention cause the real world is out there and it don’t matter how hip you think you are and who you kick it with. It don’t matter.
Teaching the kids respect. Shows them she will respect them too
Sister Mary Clarence dawns a brand new day for the classroom students and properly takes control of the classroom. Sister Mary Clarence does not look at the music class as a bird course, she looks at the class as an academic program for students to earn passing grades if they decide they would like to pass the class.
The ringleader student of the music class, Rita Watson (Played by Lauryn Hill) had a feeling of not wanting to accept the rules of a brand new day because she and her fellow classmates were always used to doing what they did best before Sister Mary Clarence came into their picture. Rita Watson had her classmates follow behind her and do the exact same things Rita herself would do, unfortunately for Rita, she always ran the show her way. Once Sister Mary Clarence got the classroom students out of their old way of what they were used to doing best, Rita looked at it like "how could you grant us a new day like this, me and my classmates were always used to doing what we did best before you came into our picture. So if you're going to treat us like this and fail us then so be it because i'm not down with this brand new day shit". Sister Mary Clarence said "Fine, if you ladies and gentlemen feel like you are not capable of following my directions, you could walk outside the door, but make sure the door doesn't hit you on the butts when you walk out".
Rita Watson was the baddest student out of each and every last one of the students in the classroom
If the whole entire classroom students would have all boycotted the classroom along with Rita, who knows where and how they all would have ended up without education
Sister Mary Clarence gave these students a lesson they would never ever forget in the real world, reminds them that they wouldn't forget where they come from and so they wouldn't forget where and how they could end up
"Baby, save it for Oprah."
If there was ever a better reply to people bitching about their lives.
I use that line everyday at school.

Whoopie Goldberg really had held her own in this scene
It also shows that Whoopie worked so hard to get where she is right now. Such as being in films. She had to make sacrifices of not attending social events due to filming schedules etc.

@@DeANGELIS4735 I know. But it also tells a story about what could happen if they change their ways. Whoopie however you know may have went to movie auditions and sees people trying to get the acting gig. She may have thought "Oh no they are better than me I am leaving". What I am saying is the character in sister act 2 says to the students. Oh yeah that's your motto you run away because you believe they are better than you. But if you want to be a somebody you have to stop running. Otherwise you are going to carry on running for the rest of your lives. That could of been how Whoopi felt in real life in her spare time. We don't know how it feels but being famous is a real tough job and not everyone makes it.

To explain how iconic this scene is: I'm a preschool teacher with a serial interrupter during circle time. One day I got so fed up with him and said, "Excuse me, when I talk, you don't."

Half the things that Sister Mary Clarence did here are firing offences now because its too "psychologically damaging" and "abusive" to the "poor, sensitive" children. Honestly, too much coddling is going on nowadays and that's why the entitlement is sky high.
You're sorely mistaken, nothing she did in the clip could even get her suspended. You must not be familiar with American public schools. As long as you aren't getting physical with students, it's very difficult to get fired as a teacher, unless you live in Florida and acknowledge that homosexuality exists.
She spoke to them with respect and on their level, and even gave the girl passing notes or whatever an opportunity to put her stuff away. When I was in public school, my teachers never gave that opportunity, they would snatch up a note and read it in front of the class, humiliating the students involved, and leaving them to deal with the social ramifications well beyond the classroom, and for months to come.
The "coddling" you're complaining of is actually the respectful trreatment of children displayed by Clarence. If she had no regard for her student's wellbeing, she could've physically and publicly removed and confiscated the hats, sunglasses, and notes, told them they couldn't use the bathroom because they planned poorly, and beaten anyone who challenged her - all things they did in the "good ol' days". But then she wouldn't be the protagonist, would she?

Wow, totally forgot this comment existed. Always meant to get back to it. To clarify a few things, yes I'm not from America so I am largely unfamiliar with school practice laws. Second, I'm from Ireland where teachers get reamed for trying to install even a modicrum of discipline with unruly students because of either nagging parents or lack of support from school administration. It varies from school to school, the local area, the types of students you're dealing with, and education laws. In the worst schools, it's nothing short of a miracle if students even bother to attend class enough, let alone learn anything. A lot of teachers are burnt out have given up and simply do the bare minimium i.e. babysit, and no more. Students are virtually immune to consequences and they know it. Hence why teachers have gone abroad and there is huge shortage.
