I have 20 year old laminate countertops. They're not fancy, but they're easy to clean and look like new. If it ain't broke, don't fix it 😁.
This is why you should just go with what you like because everything comes back!!
YES! Be happy.
If you want to know how durable granite is, go to an old cemetery. You can barely read what's carved into 200+ year old marble headstones, but the granite ones look like they were installed yesterday. It's an amazingly resilient and beautiful material.
Smiling. 1) I have plantation shutters in every room. I love them, easy to clean and maintain. With shutters we can angle the light exactly where we want to aim it. 2) I have a William Morris floral wallpaper. 3) scallops on our velvet couches. 4) I have gorgeous granite counters and backsplash. Golly! My home is finally Garret approved.
Thanks for sharing! Sounds nice.
I love my plantation shutters!! We have them in all of our rooms. But I’m really wanting to put curtains up in my living room, yet keep the shutters for privacy. Curtains would just be decorative to add a bit of warmth. Does adding curtains with shutters work?
Yes it does
@@erinpraefke8792 yes! I am going to put up curtains in my master bedroom.
We love our plantation shutters. For Florida, they are perfect. I close them and night and my morning routine is coffee, open the shutters.
People who like shutters aren’t cleaning them!
Just can’t beat granite..the natural colors, flow and durability is unmatched. Just a quick polish and it looks brand new year after year. Every slab is different so your counters look unique.
Agreed! While I love marble, it just isn't practical for my family. I redid my kitchen last year and went with granite over artificial stone based on what the stone yard professionals recommended. Although it was cheaper than quartz, they still steered me toward it because it is REAL STONE. Trends come and go, but the classics are timeless.
@@Massmommamessnot true. I have had my granite counters for almost 15 years and have never done a thing to them and they look just like they did day one. Marble needs sealing not polished granite.
@@thatgirlirish5492 good for you, my granite gets sealed every 2 years professionally.
@@MassmommamessNot necessarily...it depends on the type of granite and how careful the owner has been when taken care of it. I had granite installed almost 15 years ago. I asked the granite supplier whether it had to be sealed every year, and he said "no." I wipe up spills immediately with soapy water and use a cutting board when chopping/slicing foods; the granite still looks great!
@@user-wh4pe7xu2d mine were installed 7 years ago & get sealed on a regular schedule.I can accept yours don't why can't you accept mine do?
We just renovated our 1970s home and found that a lot of what we were putting back in was a modern version of 1970’s! 😂
Your post is making me have flashbacks to avocado green walls with coppertone colored appliances with varinshed unstained knotty pine cabinets.
@@elizabethstump4077oh no! Not the green appliances! Next thing they’ll bring back colored toilet paper!
Hahaha!!! We had coffee au lait coloured bathroomware! But replaced it in white!
I meant more replacing the dark brown shiplap with dark brown modern slats etc.
@@sharondalynnewton7562I miss colored tp. I used to design dresses for my Barbie doll with it. The Christmas design kleenexes were cool, too. I still remember the ones with tiny candy canes on them.
Im 20 years old, and I'm convinced that there going to bring back colored toilet paper and people my age are going to think this is a new thing, there's probably going to be tik toks saying wow look at this toilet paper with green palm tree leaves as a pattern.
We bought a 1950’s cottage in Mobile, AL in 2021. Narrow plank wood flooring. Arched walls into the dining room. Built ins in the living room. Designated historical district. It’s so cute!
oh how I would love to see a picture of your home!! 💖🙂
Garrett. I love you! Lol. I am a senior, on limited budget in older home. I love how you combine styles and budget and Safety in your videos. Much appreciated! I miss Albert, I lost my 16 year old Lily at the same time.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you are enjoying. We miss Albert so much every day. He’s not a soul we will ever forget.
I lost my around 20 Year old Cats last winter....I still am in pain, although I have 4 again ( 2 Kittens were brought to me in oktober)....I will never have two so loving and kind and cuddly friends ever again....my other cats are sweet, too......but the two seniors were special......every of these souls is unique!!! Kindest regards
@@MinkaSchlossberger4ever 😔😔😔
We lost our beautiful Sheltie, Duffy two years ago. When Garrett posted that they lost Albert, I was balling my eyes out. So sorry for your loss.
We’ve built three homes since 1991 and every one we’ve had shutters installed. It’s always been a classic and clean look and I don’t remember them ever going out of style. They also seem to blend with any decor.
Had the narrow plank floors from about 30 years ago, never wanted to change them and knew they would be baaack
They never actually went out, I think. The wide planks were just a trend.
They came with my 1939 apartment, it’s beautiful.
Shutters are elegant, but so expensive. I’m a real estate agent, and on Cape Cod, and in Florida we put the 2 inch slotted blinds in our windows. They were fraction of the cost, and they accomplish the same thing by allowing us to control the light inside and the view outside. And unlike shutters, you can pull them up and retract them completely if you want so it’s never darker than you intend.
We just left our 1923 house to a 1990’s. The hardest part is trends messing with my head. It is easy to ignore trends with the previous house as you can anchor on the period.
Yes do take us to your antique shops to show furniture
Granite never left 😊
In 2019, my local stone store tried to tell me I was dating my brand new kitchen bc I chose granite instead of quartz. In truth, it was all about the fact they were making less money from me. LOL. I chose a subdued granite slab pattern and have been very happy with it. Btw...had no idea that scalloped furnishings were back. I learn so much from your channel Garrett! Love that for me!🥳
Thanks so much! I’m glad you are enjoying. I’m glad you went with the material you like for your home. 😊
We moved into this house 4 years ago. It has granite countertops and I love them! They're so easy to keep clean and will always be beautiful!
I have always loved, loved thin plank oak floors. The wood grain never ceases to fascinate me. I even love the look of orange shellac instead of stain. Goes so well with almost every design era.
Laminate! I am old enough to remember when no one had stone countertops, except for the very wealthy. When granite started being touted for the masses, the appeal was that it was bulletproof and you would never have to replace your counters again. Well, guess what? The masses discovered trends and found that they quickly tired of their granite choices. Or, they bought a pre-owned house and found they could not decorate around the previous owner’s unfortunate granite choices. Anyway, huge, heavy, irreplaceable slabs of stone (they take millions of years for the Earth to manufacture) were broken up and replaced with other huge, heavy, irreplaceable slabs of stone. Most were sourced from quarries not even on this continent.
Laminate is now practically bulletproof. It is manufactured of pressboard (ie:tree scraps), paper, photographic or printed images, and a coating. The coating may be made with hydrocarbons, but they also may be made with plant-based finishes. None of this is necessarily shipped from far away. The sheets of laminate now come as long as 12 feet, without repetition of pattern. Edges can be as varied as with stone. Colors are infinite. Changes are easy and do not involve destroying any cabinetry. As for heat resistance, you can take a section of your hated granite or marble to a stone shop and have them make as many stone trivets as you like. (Does anybody really put hot pots on their stone countertops anyway? Doesn’t that involve the risk of cracking?). Or take a few porcelain tiles from your new flooring choice out to the garage and grind the edges smooth and use contact cement to add a cork bottom - cheap, matching trivets!
Garret, I am from a country where granite is really popular, and I can attest how sturdy and easy it is to clean, besides not getting stained like other stones. And it is very common to have granite flooring as well, since it is always very hot here. 😀
I loathe the wall paper in my house. I finally got rid of it all and put beautiful colors in my home with crown molding. I love my place now.
I had that horrible brown granite and installed a leathered quartzite with my new kitchen. It has the look of marble and the durability of granite. Pro tip - habitat for humanity took all of my old granite, cabinets, and light fixtures - even my bathroom mirrors. It now has a second life and helps with affordable housing needs. I decided to leave my red oak floors throughout my house even though white oak is the new trend. It was the environmentally friendly decision and was easy on the budget. Love your videos.
We have granite. It is very durable. We did go look at many slabs before picking it out. We love it!
My narrow plank floors are original from 1960. They had been covered for years with wall to wall carpeting. We recently had them refinished. I would never replace them.
I live in an 80s apartment that has solid ivory laminate counter tops with curved edges and I love them. I like them so much better than the fake granite ones they're putting in when they do an up grade.
I have granite. We gutted our kitchen 3yrs ago and we chose black pearl granite. Love it!
I love granite. I love marble. I love quartz. I think just do what you like and forget about it. I like your advice.
So true! I had a hard time deciding because I love them all!
I had my granite counter tops installed in 2008. Durability is not an issue as long as you use a cutting board. Tomato and lemon will ruin the finish, and cause stains. Also, steer clear of using bleach or ammonia base cleaning products or gritty cleaning products. I chose a contrast color of dark, dark green counter tops to my maple cabinetry. It’s a personal choice, you do you.
I would LOVE to see photos of your work, your favorite places in Vegas, or anything else that you can share from "the real world" out there!

Yesss I hate the wide floor planks 🎉 my 1954 apartment has original hardwood, 1.5 inch planks and I adore them ❤ with two toned detail framing the fireplace
We also have vintage scalloped kitchen cabinets and built-ins. The classic details do not go out of style in my book!
You are so right on picking stones! Our builder wanted us to pick our countertops from tiny stones at the design center. I made a big deal about being a rock collector and needing to see them in person. So grateful I did because the stone I thought I’d like was so splotchy! We ended up falling in love with this White Wave Granite outside of the builder selections. It had been sitting there collecting dust for two years because everyone who upgrades chooses quartz. Glad I’m trendy again! 😏
All these DIYers that painted over their granite are quaking lol
Omg, paint granite? That's obscene!
People painted over granite?!?! 🥴🤡
I've never seen anyone paint over granite!!
We just put shutters all over the house. It was ridiculously expensive but they’re quite nice. I also painted a subtle naturey mural around the fireplace. We’ll be doing thin planked hardwoods eventually too!
Sounds great! I did fine shutters in our last home in the informal family room and we liked them very much.
Classic and warmth in design is timeless, and that’s why it’s back. Modern design is sterile, cold, lifeless and institutional looking. Too much white and gray - lifeless! It must be said! Sorry, not sorry! Lol
Omg! Back in 2020 I bought a home and chose veiny bold granite countertops for my kitchen, shutters for the indoors and a wallpaper for my home office. It only took 4 years for my choices to be in. 😅
I don’t like when a “thing” I have becomes a trend because then it becomes “out of style”… not that that stops me. I have WHAT I LIKE!
Great! That’s what I’ve been advocating on the channel since the beginning.
I inherited the house my great-grandfather built in the early 60’s. It has wood shutters and granite countertops and I was in despair over having to replace the wall to wall carpeting in there, till my mother recalled that the house when built had lovely thin plank hardwood floors. A little investigation (family photos) showed it was still there and thanks to the careful care it had received up until being covered it was still in great condition. They had covered the floors when my grandfather started slipping on the slick floors and/or scatter rugs. Around the late 70’s she thought. A quick clean and basic refinish/polish and they’ve looked perfect ever since. So glad to see these “old” styles coming back.
I love my quartz! No work to care for & it doesn’t look fake !
Just bought the most gorgeous granite countertop - lots of movement, mainly white with grey and pops of purple aaannnd a section we positioned prominently with some black cheetah spots. The rest of the kitchen is fairly demure and the counter is just gorgeous. At a glance looks a little like carrera marble - so glad we went with it
Our house is from 1890 and we have 2in wide planks. I love them so much and can’t do wide plank, hurts my eyes
I went with quarz for our recent kitchen renovation. I love it that my husband cooks, but he does NOT wipe up spills, so marble was off the table. I chose a very subtle pattern so it doesn't scream "fake" too loudly and I can sleep at night.
Our previous home we used Cambria quartz but on our current house remodel project I decided to use leathered Black Pearl granite. It was so much cheaper and suits our rustic cabin. Slabs of Cambria in my area were about $3200 and the black granite was about $900. It’s also more durable than quartz.
I decided on soapstone in my dark moody kitchen. We love it. Dark matte green cabinets. Unlacquered brass. So different than all of the kitchens I see as a Realtor.
HI Garrett, Where I live the things you called "shutters" are called "wooden blinds". Interesting.
Yah. They’re shudders.
There are blinds and there are shutters. Two different things. Though different regions may call shutters blinds.
I've always lived by the motto "buy what you LOVE, because you can live with what you LOVE!" It's a motto that has served me well over the years. As someone who loves traditional design, I don't follow trends mush, except maybe a few decor pieces, but otherwise, I'm choosing more classic pieces to add to my space.
I absolutely love my shutters!
I would love to have shutters!!! Enjoy!
I just love it when you are spotlighting things that I have already done in my house, and that is because classic and traditional NEVER go out of style! I love my Santa Cecelia Light granite countertops and my thin plank real wood floors! In the past 6 months, I changed out all of my overhead lighting fixtures, had my cabinets painted a nice off-white and installed new, cream-colored, small 4” subway tile for the backsplash. It looks wonderful!
Glad you enjoy it!😊😊😊
I love granite countertops
Soapstone, and we still love it after 4 years. Easy maintenance with hitting it with mineral oil every so often only. Just don’t drop objects on it because it will chip. But otherwise we love it and we cook and entertain on it all of the time.
I love your style and sense of humor! I'd LOVE to see an episode about renter friendly design. Things to upgrade and beautify a rental space! Thatd be so awesome!
Thanks so much! I’ll consider one again for the future. The one I did in the past didn’t seem to be of great interest to our viewers. Our viewers and what interests them guides us allot of course in what content we create.
I agree!
Hardwood is a King
I have thin plank floors. It was a simple as ripping out the wall to wall carpet. It needed some sanding and refinishing but they are a gorgeous golden oak now
About 20 years ago, my husband and I laid about 800 square feet of wood flooring ourselves. Garrett, I had things hurting on my body that I didn't even know I owned! The planks are about 2 inches wide. If I had to do it over, I'd pick 12 inch planks if they make them!!
In a city apartment we decided to have a so called Dekton counter top; simply because of its functionality and easy cleanness
Granite and love it
We LOVE our Plantation shutters that we had put on all the bedroom windows as well as one extra room that faces the street, in 2002. Still beautiful & fresh.
YES! Take us around Vegas!! I would really enjoy your perspective.
👍👍👍
In 2021 we bought our forever home which had both granite and shutters. I would have never purchased them before, but I love them so much now. So much better than blinds!
We renovated Our Home in 2021 and chose 5 inch engineered hardwood floors in red oak carmel character brushed by Mirage Floors, they are a caramel color and are absolutely Gorgeous. We also picked Bianco Antico Granite from the Stone yard for our kitchen with New cream colored traditional style cabinets. We Love everything we chose.
I love the all white, shaker style, quartz countertops look but I knew that I wouldn’t be happy in the long term with that choice so I chose what My heart desired..❤
I have learned so much through watching you and am happy to learn these trends are back. That's good news for me since I already have these in my home with the exception of scalloped furnishings. LOL
I realized years ago that what goes around comes around. As a retiree I couldn't afford major renovations every few years.😊
Yay! I’ll glad you are enjoying the content, and I appreciate your support. 😊😊😊
I have a black textured granite in the kitchen mixed with walnut flat front cabinets. It’s super durable and beautiful. In the bathroom my husband liked a really pretty granite (it had tones of brown/white) and I chose a boring quartz white with a little grey/taupe veining (a bit of a fail) but I’m living with it. Luckily, it’s not a huge bathroom so down the line we can replace it. ❤
Love my granite. Durable, easy to care for and so unique to each space.
Granite can be very nice but I recommend a honed/matt finish so it's not so so so shiny. There is an incredible honed black granite that is bold without being overpowering.
In our ~ 200 yr old farm house, we have a man-made product in the sink area that looks like soupstone - Dekton. It's very durable and hard wearing. We salvaged our wide plank heart of pine floors during home renovations. We had them planed and now are our island countertop. Saved us about $2K, good for the environment, unique look, and respected the history of the house. While durable, I don't think they would hold up in a home with small children.
We love our shutters. Have had most of ours for 19 years. When when added the additional windows beyond the front of house, we purchased Bella View composite ones from American Blinds. They frequently have 50% off or bogo sales. You cannot beat the pricing and the quality is outstanding! Super easy to hang yourself.
Cambria Quartz for the win! I absolutely love it. Traditional coming back? Didn't realize it was gone. LOL Thanks, Garrett. I'd love to see walk-about videos. Perhaps you could pick a beautiful background in your city and talk about design trends there.
More to come!
love you Garrett..😁I'm helping a friend remodeling her kitchen...we grabbed a bunch of granite samples we loved. But when we went to see the slabs. What a difference...😱you really have to go and see the slab.. or you might be very disappointed..
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying.
Another thought, take a place setting of your table ware when you go to pick out your slab. Some slabs are very beautiful but when you put your dishes on it you see that it does not match your style. For example, I have very colorful Italian and when put on a dramatic modern slab , well it just did not sing to me.
*Counters* . For my cottage loving self, I would LOVE butcherblock counters. My current counters are 1965 gold formica that was "transformed" with the magic of Rustoleum Counter Re-finish (not by me), they are holding up well. Second choice would be honed granite. I'm not a shiny things gal, matte is where it's at.
I refuse to have any countertop that hides dirt and crumbs, so busy dark granites will never come back for me.
In Australia we put in a thick victorian ash wood bench top that contrasts with our baltic pine floor boards and cream cabinets. Yes it needs some care but 20 years later it still looks amazing. Noone ever talks about hard wood benches...maybe its a down under thing in period homes here?
I had my kitchen done in narrow engineered maple back in 2008
I love my kitchen quartz....my only criteria was that it was the color of toast crumbs....lol...it actually looks great and hides toast crumbs .which I can never seem to be rid of 😊...just did our master bathroom and used the ocean jasper quartz....I've wanted that quartz for ten years and now I have it....oh..also would love to see you put out a polo shirt with " that's besides the point" and GLC under it!!!
I remodeled the kitchen in my historic Fan (Richmond, VA) home WAAAAAAAAAAY back in 2003. I chose birch cabinets that came close to matching the original restored heart pine floors (covered by three, count ‘em THREE layers of vinyl) and a brownish-black granite with fleckings of taupe and terracotta. The effect was so very warm and inviting. Following this, the trend changed to all white or gray kitchens with marble, and gray plank floors. I never stopped loving my own kitchen, and, to this day, still do. It feels timeless, not trendy.
I was always Team Granite, IDC. It's beautiful!
I love all of these trends and many of them are already in my home.
I have plantation shutters and for the Australian climate ( very warm, they are fantastic. Looking very cute today gorgeous Garrett.
Thanks so much!
Yes, that's what I want. Living in Hawaii it works well.
Experienced thru decades: Marble No; Quartzite Yes; Granite YES; Soapstone No; Tile yes if outdoors only/No indoors
Love my granite ! Love my indoor shutters too!
Walking on wide planks does feel luxurious. Still …kept our 1940’s thin plank floors because they are still in great shape and I like the look. But would love if you made a video on designing with honey oak floors as the warm tone and variation can be challenging😊
So glad to hear granite is coming back as I just moved into my NYC apartment that was renovated in the mid 2010s with a granite kitchen.
Cool! I have narrow planked hardwood floors in my house! Half wood shutters in the kitchen. ( Had it forever.) But, hey, I'm in front of the trend!
I loved all my Danmer Shutters❤. It makes my house cooler inside.
As much as I like the white of my quartz, when I replace my countertop, it will be either granite or something cheaper to replace. My quartz is scratched up everywhere, even though they advertise as so hard to scratch. Then they tell me it can’t be repaired. The countertop was just past 1 year when I noticed the scratches. At least granite and marble can be repaired.
Real Quartz is able to be sanded and polished. Maybe the contractor didn't know how or didn't want to do it? I worked for a grave stone lapidairy. Quartz can be refinished as can granite.
@@shinnam quartz or quartzite? Because quartz is man made. Well, I tried to contact several places near me, and no one would do it.
Dang! (Our quartz is 10 years old and has yet to scratch.)
@@lorraineedmond5921 What brand of quartz did you get?
@@marcilk7534quartz is a natural stone. One of the most common stones in the world, quartzite , amethyst and rose quartz are kinds of quartz.
We used Fantasy Brown granite recently, love it. In a separate office we are installing leathered White Galaxy on a wet bar. If an area is smaller, remnants can offer a less expensive way to have beautiful granite.
I love the thin plank floors! We have wooden plantation shutters in our house, and I love them. You can get exactly the amount of light in the house that you want. The only place we don't have them is the kitchen/family room.
We just remodeled our kitchen and chose granite countertops. It is so gorgeous! Lots of contrast and movement! We love just looking at it. It was also cheaper than quartz, so it was a no brainer. I hate my Fireclay sink, though. Big regret!
We bought our 150 year old house 20 years ago and it had brand new Corian solid surface counters in the kitchen including an integrated sink. Very subtle green cast to dark grey counter and a cream sink. As much as I wouldn't have chosen green, it has grown on me and with us as we've made this house our own. It also been an absolute workhorse. It doesn't show anything. It still looks brand new. It definitely scratches if you stick a box from Amazon on the counter after it's been sitting on the porch, but those scratches sort of melt away as you wipe it down. If I got to choose again, I think I'd go with this. Maybe not green. 😉
Corian also makes a wonderful surface for a shower. Imagine no grout and almost no upkeep whatsoever!
I had shutters installed in my southwest-facing condo. They were perfect for controlling light and easy to clean. They were expensive but well worth it.
Love wallpaper too
Crazy Horse granite for the win!!! I second the advice to go walk around the slab yard. The one you love will jump out at you.
We are in the process of redoing our kitchen and we chose granite
We did a whole kitchen remodel in 2021 and went with granite. It's so durable and we love it! It used to have 4 inch white tiles that his parents put in in the early 90's. The grout line was huge and white!!! We couldn't get rid of it fast enough!
I’ve had counters made of laminate, quartz, corian and granite. My favourite is the natural stone granite. Choosing a slab can be challenging. Many colours, designs and you need a size that will fit your design. Granite can be sealed to make it maintain free.
Thank goodness the flooring is not gray!!!!!😅
I have leathered granite and love them. Look just as beautiful as the day they were installed.
I have granite and love it. It’s so underrated!!
Just now getting rid of granite for Quartz. Looking for some soft lightness in the kitchen as opposed to the brown/beige of 2012. Hope I'm not sorry! LOL!
We will be building a house soon but we bought our granite , 5 slabs, 2 years ago for it. We do have a family granite and terrazzo business but not where we are building. For our kitchen we are using absolute black, but the island is a gorgeous piece of Blue Bahia which is also going in the master bath and half bath. I am so excited about how pretty it all is. So glad to hear it's popular again.....
I love my quartz counters they’ve been quite durable. I have one chip that was 100% my fault when my pliers slipped, shouldn’t have been doing anything like that on the counter. I think maybe granite now has some more subtle patterns but back when I redid my kitchen granite was so busy and speckled and quartz was the only thing I could get that was a solid color other than laminate. I just don’t like busy. I can’t deal with a lot of pattern and movement and veins. Nope nope not for me, would drive me crazy. Same with wallpaper, I’ve seen some pretty ones, but after having slaved over stripping wallpaper more than once, I said, I will never live in a place with wallpaper. I also said wallpaper will never come back in style and apparently I was wrong about that.
We need to renovate our kitchen so we can sell it. We got so many great ideas from you. My husband knows I get my ideas from you. He appreciates your ideas. We aren't trend followers. We prefer classic looks. Show a video of classic designs. We will be replacing our tile counters with Home Depot in stock counters. Tile sucks for counters.
Granite for life for me.
Absolutely love my black granite courter top. Installed 10 years ago and still looks new and easy to maintain. Love your channel. Thanks.
Awesome! Thanks so much. 😊
