The Apple Watch always uses the iPhone GPS if it has a Bluetooth connection to your iPhone carried with you, you can’t even stop it and like you said it is a huge battery saver. You can also use a Bluetooth chest strap or optical arm strap (like those from Polar, Wahoo or Scosche) to monitor your HR which turns off the optical HR on the watch. This for long runs or hikes can boost Apple Watch GPS tracking life to about 24 HOURS!!! but of course you’ll likely also need to have a charging solution for your iPhone hooked to a battery pack in a belt or backpack.

This is something I’ve have trying to find out for days now. I want to use my watch for a Marathon and wanted to know if it would last 26.2 miles. Thanks

I have the 44mm 6 and when using work outdoors I can get 10-11 hours using the watches gps and on airplane mode. I look at it around 4 times an hour on avg so really happy with that 😀

Great video very informative i had the first Gen AW it great with 5,10 and 21km runs , but when i need it for a long run say 30km and above battery life was pathetic. Then i switched over to the Garmin Vivo Active 3 which was awesome for 42.2km marathons but when pushed to ultras say 48km or 60km battery dies at 50/52km. Now Apple has launched an expensive AW ultra which has 36 hours battery life. Since i was planning to get a Fenix 7 for my next upgrade. I am stuck between new Ultra AW or Fenix 7 the Garmin Solar is more expensive then new AW ultra but looks and feels more solid then the Apple watch.

Personally I wouldn’t use an Apple Watch for an ultra. I did a 100km and ended up charging while on my wrist, just a hassle

Nailed it here. I’m with you 💯 about wanting a watch to fit my daily life, and suffice for most of my runs otherwise.

Cheers! Yeah, certainly was my main consideration in picking up an Apple Watch. That may change as my running goals do, but it's served me well so far.

@@DTiPNZ Thanks for this great video! I wonder, how do you analyze your runs? within workourdoors? different app?

I used Apple Watch SE2 for runs. All the time I turned on WorkOutDoors App with GPS and Spotify music connected to bluetooth earbuds. This morning I clocked 55 mins run and I used up 40% of the battery. I don't think it would last a full 4 hours marathon even. What do you think? Great video.

Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve been agonizing over this decision for weeks. Since I always take my phone on big adventures and also can use an external HR monitor, sounds totally workable. Hurray!

If you can bring a physical map and iPhone , you may bring en tiny external battery .
When I am hiking , I use it when I rest or eat to do a quick charge during 10-20mn it is enough to have all extra power I need for a long trail.

How about an external heart rate monitor? Would that improve battery life ?

I have that same question. what takes more battery life blue tooth or hr monitor. I would guess HR monitor, because it is constantly connected to your phone by ble and the doesn't seem to effect the battery too much.

I use AW for purely fitness, I have all the annoying/helpful functions turned off, cellular off etc. I wanted the best quality wrist based heart sensor, while being ultra easy to use, that synced the phone health app no problems. My first full Ironman distance came up too quick, didn’t have another device ready. Had to charge the watch on my bike for 1 Hr with a power bank strapped to my aero bars. No phones are allowed on the race at all. Watch only, It worked great. All I lost was 1hr of heart data in my 6:59 bike section. Still had 60% left after the rest of the bike then the marathon. 3 separate activities saved to Strava on the day.
AW 7 won’t have much to improve on to make it capable next year if I get my sub 12 time. 👍🏼👍🏼

This was a great video. Thank you. GoToes was an awesome savior for me as well. Tip to bring your phone for GPS is something I would forget when running, but remember when cycling.

What size (mm) is the watch in your video? If the 40mm, did you find the screen size 'just right'?

I legit had to rewind to make sure you didn't have a reflection of yourself somehow eating a sandwich in the glossy picture frame. Great video

So how many hours you can run when you do all these tips to save battery life? I noticed that when I run with my Iphone connected, the watch burn 5-7% per hour.

    • @DTiPNZ
      @DTiPNZ  3 года назад +1

Hard one to answer as depends on the Watch - I was using a Series 4 that was about two years old, and was checking the maps quite regularly, and the longest I managed was around 8 hours. As I said in the video though, not checking the screen regularly would’ve made a huge difference. Hopefully some others can comment their experiences too.

@@DTiPNZ I checked many time and can confirm that when I bring the phone connected, the watch use iphone gps, and the route map in this case look not as sharp as the case that I use the watch alone. But the battery consume decrease to only half of what it usually consume when running with the watch only.
