- I know many people would not be particularly proud of completing a pleasure ride, and even more so would not expect a rider who's ridden at FEI level to be proud of completing a pleasure ride, but here I am, REALLY DAMN PROUD of completing a pleasure ride.
I see the novice years as the 'education' years for my horses. It's where I have the opportunity to practice as many of the scenarios that will come up when they eventually get to FEI as I can. I try to emulate the processes they'll be doing in years to come as closely as possible.
The week running up to a pleasure ride is exactly the same as my run up to a big race. I like to take them on overnight stays and to busy venues. I like to get them out of bed early to watch the race riders warm up and start together, walk through the vet gate the night before and generally be exposed to as much competition atmosphere as possible.
Now in the past this has gone pretty smoothly with Azid and Pria, they have taken everything in their stride, doing their novice rides at FEI venues, but Qantas is a little more sensitive. But that's ok, it just means the education part of his training is even more important and it may take us a little more time to get him to be at ease at a competition.
Which is why I'm so proud that Qantas was well behaved for his first sleep over, walked around the busy venue listening to me and not freaking out, that he went into the vetting, that he started calmly. He was ace out on course, really forward going and sure footed, he never pulled to follow any horses that passed and he accepted being sponged down by the crew out on course like a champ. He went in front and behind and kept a lovely even pace.
I like to do the shorter distances like a mini race ride. Start slow and then increase the speed as the ride goes on, just like I would each loop of a race. If the conditions are right I also like to canter across the finish line, this gives me a better idea of what they are going to be like to crew in vet gates and gives them a teeny bit of practice for any potential racing finishes.
Qantas then stood beautifully still to be untacked and crewed at the end of his ride and did the most wonderful trot up to finish. His mind was well and truly tired ,you could see it in his face and body language but his body was in top notch form and by the way he turned out in his field later that day he still had plenty of energy left in the tank.
It would be so easy to focus on the negatives, that we had to downgrade to a pleasure ride because his heart rate was too high at the start to risk it, that he panicked and bucked me off, that his initial trot up was sideways across three lanes, that he hates the sound of sloshes, that he spins and bronks at the sound of horses coming up behind him, but to me those are things we can work on. It's the improvements that make me happy and are what I want to focus on.
Every training session and every competition I do with Qantas I see as a stepping stone to our long term goal, the results don't really matter, it's the journey and giving him the best foundation I can so that one day when we are competing for a win I'll know I did everything I could to set him up for success.
Thanks for watching,
Beth - Спорт
Was such a fun day! thank you again Beth for letting me ride your beautiful Tissy :)
You're most welcome 🦄
This is just awesome! I was watching while on my exercise bike and felt a bit rattled - like I had come off!! 😄 Good going to finish up. He is such a beautiful boy!!!
And you have every right to feel proud!!!!
Congrats on Quantis' finish! You're always so honest about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I hope your hip is all healed up!
Thank you! 🥰
Ahhh, I have been waiting for this! Well done to Qantas for not being a spaz out on course and being good for vetting. And he was very nice about booting you in the crew area and not out on course-that is a win win right there. I can just picture Tizzy saying "amateur" while he was being crazy. This makes me even more excited for my ride in October.
I am replying to myself, but have to add in your dad is so funny the way he was talking to Qantas while sponging him down. Everyone needs a dad like him, lol.
I know it's cute isn't it ❤️ he does a different accent in every crew point but I think Qantas lines the Pitstop Italian accent like the little forklift of cats 🤣 if you're too quiet Qantas freaks out but if you constantly chatter and be louder with him he's fine 😊 x
Good you could laugh at the kick in the hip🤭glad you were ok🐎
So proud of you both! Qantas passing the vetting is a big accomplishment. I remember watching the video from his last attempt and how things didn't go to plan. It's so nice to see the progress you've both made together! ❤️
Aww thank you 🥰
Congrats, Beth! I'm so glad you're a physical therapist so you know how to fix your owie! How'd you feel the next day? Funny aside: I was following you and Esme before I knew you guys knew each other! It's fun to see my two favorites together! Lastly, I just worked a vetting station at Tevis Cup last weekend!! So much fun! Incredible athletes- both horses and riders! ~Holly
Oh wow, it would be a dream to do Tevis!
I was fine the next day, thank you 😊 x
Awesome riding Beth, glad you didn't break anything, lol. Looks like you have a real runner.
Yay, well done Qantas. I look forward to following your journey together. I'm learning so much from watching your videos :D
Yay! I'm soo glad Qball wasn't too much of a spaz this time out. I mean we wouldn't want him to become totally boring and predictable. But we kind of love him being a bit of a spaz it's part of his Quantas uniqueness.
This made me laugh so much 🤣🙈
Only 45% spaz is a definite improvement from last time. Tissy's general level of disdain for Quantas's spaz moments is quite hilarious. You have the funniest horses. 😂😂
Good in the vetting Qantas but on the fourth crew point I think the mixture of the horses coming behind him and the long grass just made him explode but apart from that hope you are ok I think having Tizzy as company and support was good I like the way Tizzy just kept checking on him as if to say it is ok Qantas just try and calm yourself she says and he says no I can’t it is to much excitement and all these other ponies to make friends with but at least you know that you can work on the horses coming from behind thing so we’ll done everyone and thank you for taking us along on Qantas’s first successful ride may there be many more
When he try’s to pull you when on the ground practice by stopping him and make him back up every time he barges which may help or if he even walks too fast. 😁
Cirencester was such a lovely ride, I'm so happy to have finally gotten to ride around there this year, although I only saw 16km of it! Which day was this? looks a bit soggier than the day we went! Shame he managed to unseat you, hope you weren't too sore!! What great experience for Qantas though, isn't he fabulous! I'm a sucker for a nice Chestnut!
We were there on the Saturday. Glad you had a good ride, it's a lovely route x
Ohh at least u got him back
I love all your vlogs, and admire you that even when you fall you don't get scared or anything. And so nice to see Esmee in the endurance hopes she got the virus..and will buy an arabian.🤣🤣
Thank you, but I do get scared, I've just had lots of sports psychology training on managing my breathing and heart rate so I stay calm. I was just saying to Dan when we watched the video after editing that just watching me get back on Qantas made my heart rate go up 🙈 x
@@bethendurance he is not an easy horse.. specially on endurance comp. It is always so busy..hope he gets used to it quickly..so you don't have to be on gard every minute.. but he is really nice to watch and a good mover.. and tissy is just lovely how she does it all!! Big fan of you.. will Dan start a fun ride also this year?😄
I'll ask him, I would love that x
Wow that looks amazing! I went on my first endurance ride today and really enjoyed it, do you know if horses can compete bitless as they go up the levels?
I'm glad you enjoyed your ride 👍 you can ride bitless all the way up to FEI and Championships in Endurance x
Please dont tell me that in the best crossover on the internet that Azid is Esme's new horse? Everyone on her channel is speculating, but I watch both of youse and now i feel like I'm part of the secret club lol
😂 😂 😂 I can confirm Azid is not going to Esme x
So Quantas seemed to be steadier with Tissy there?
It definitely helped keeping him cool at the venue to have a friend x
