DUDE thank you! I finally just found a bunch of springtails yesterday at my friend's house, and have been trying to figure out how to keep them... I need them for my closed plant terrariums. I knew charcoal works for them, but now I know water and rice is good to keep with them too. Very useful video that came right in time!
Not tarantula related at all... but I'm in nursing school, and the semester just started, and my program is in chaos because of last minute staffing changes and poor communication... In short, I'm super stressed, and your videos always help bring me out of that head space. So thank you for sharing your tarantulas and other critters, and helping me maintain some sanity!
I just love springtails even if they go out of the enclosure and in your house they will eat the mold so one of the only fauna without any cons and your videos are just great
I just finished watching the whole "season 2" of TheDarkDen right now, cause i had some problems with my Internet connection and I couldn't watch any videos. So... BOIII THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
Just for future reference charcoal in the US and possibly European countries means something completely different than the wood that you used, so people make sure you get proper charcoal and not the stuff they use for barbecues ;) Excellent video as usual.
@@jinggu6069 most charcoal has chemicals added to it to help with grilling, which is what it's primarily sold for in the west. I've never seen "pure charcoal" for sale.
In the US you want what is referred to as lump charcoal which is just chunks of carbonized wood as opposed to charcoal briquets which is basically crushed and formed harcoal with binders and other chemicals used to improve burn.
Awesome footage my friend!! 😊 Some people need a Coffee, and all i need is a New Video from you ❤️ thanks for what are you doing Petko... Can't wait to See the New Video on friday ❤️ you are awesome my friend 😊
When I started indoor gardening a few years ago some of the soil I bought had springtails. Over the years I've kept them in my indoor planters and especially in my compost. I always find them on the surface layer with wet coffee grinds. My current compost has a good colony of springtails, when I populate new planters I always transfer them to the new planter. I didn't pay anything for my springtails, and probably you could get some from your backyard soil, they are that common.
Thank you, I got a Curly Hair Tarantula awhile back, and these things kept popping up, and collecting in the water dish, they would jump around on the water and were long. I originally thought they were mites and was worried, but now know that they're in fact springtails.. happy to know they won't harm my spider, and that they're actually a good thing to have
Enjoyed this vid, I think you should do a series every Wednesday, neat little individual videos about parts of upkeep. Substrate, lighting, hides, etc etc.
Cool video thank you so much for inspiring my brother to get spiders and taking care of them because you were an inspiration to my brother thank you so much dark den
Springtails jump. Isopods are wood lice that live under rotting wood they have a shell almost like a armadillo LOL. Buy them from a online shop is the best way. spidershop.co.uk
@The Dark Den Great video, are the Springtails ok with slings, also if you are rehousing a spider, to a new enclosure, and the old enclosure has springtails in it what do you do ?
I don't have access to springtails, but the natural environment that I get my substrate often contains springtail-like creatures. And I have never had any problems with that.
i have a springtail colony of my own which i just accidentally acquired when i tried to establish an isopod colony. all of the isopods died then the springtails just suddenly appeared like out of thin air. .not what i had in mind at first but springtails are tinier and even more easier to care for.
I have a question regarding springtails and isopods that I have not been able to find an answer to. The question is: how humid does the enclosure need to be for springtails and isopods to live there and help maintain a good environment in the enclosure?
I was reading the comments and there's many like me that don't know how to get them to start them I hope that you can see these comments and help us thanks so much!!!
Still left with questions. In the US we have options for which type of springtail. And I'm told some are better for dryer enclosures, like GBB's, and some are better for high humidity like Goliath's. So which ones do you pick??? Or does that even matter? Still a great video, thank you Petko!
Yesterday my boys and I went into the woods and overturned logs in an attempt to find springtails for our isopod vivarium... we found some roly polys but no (visible) springtails
Petko, what happened with the really funny comments that you used to put in your videos, like the a animal speaking and complaining? XD... You are the best!
Is it possible to have too many springtails? I have a terrarium that has a small waterfall/creek running through it and a Avicularia Avicularia tarantula living inside. This set up is about 18 months old and I feel like my springtails have over ran the tank. It used to have a few salamanders living inside it but they died off over the year since getting them. I noticed my salamanders were eating the springtails and helping me get them.
Petko you are awesome, been watching your videos from day, I mean not literally, but watched them all, and really wish I could get a Tarantula pet, just need to convince my landlord that it is safe to have it and it won't bother anyone, any suggestions !?!?! PLEASE !?!?
Does your tenancy agreement specifically state that no Tarantulas are allowed? Does he/she have keys to your place? If you have an inspection due just leave the T with a friend for a couple of hours or leave it in cupboard or car if you have one. Note. when my landlord changed the locks + kept a key I just bought a new lock to replace it + kept his old lock and keys for when i move out to replace it back again. I dont like the idea of anyone else having keys to my place other than me. And my agreement stated no pets but I had a dog anyway + it never bothered anyone so it was all good, plus the landlord himself has dogs so I didnt see the problem. He never said anything anyway when he did find out. He's always been pretty good with me, I guess I'm lucky as my previous landlord was an a**hole. Good luck + enjoy your T if you get one.
Can I use springtails in dry enclosures like for a b.hamorii for instance or can they only survive in a humid environment like theraphosa species for instance? Also are there any plants that I can use for a dry enclosure again for instanc b.hamorii?
Petko, I have an enclosure from my A. Avicularia MM that passed the same day I received my 3 new slings. I am going to clean it out and put it away. Is there a way save them without substrate? Can I move them to something more enticing like charcoalmaybe? Or should I just dry it all out and let them die? I know they are not expensive and I have other cultures. It just doesn't seem right to waste them.
I have 3 crested geckos and sometimes when am really tired I’ll not bother taking the food caps out. I get white bugs over the caps are they springtails? My tanks are kept very clean so am just confused!
Now you need to make a care video for isopods, lol
everytime I see petko upload I instantly stop what I'm doing and watch the vid. The 20% midterm that I have can wait lmao
Same lmao! And it's funny I came here as someone scared of spiders, yet I look forward to his videos the most of channels I am subbed to. 😂
I’m a big fan or springtails in my enclosures of tarantulas great video Petko
Hey there, now there's a familiar face
Luis Almazan hey hey lol we have to support each other I always watch everybody stuff

Wow. Soooo much easier than I expected.

Huh?... I always thought it's just the charcoal for cooking.... Which is just elemental carbon... Is it not?

If anyone needs clarification. Get lump charcoal, aka real charcoal, not charcoal BRIQUETTES which have added chemicals

F... the springtails, Petko has a new haircut! 😱
Your new haircut looks great!!! 😁
I see that fresh high fade staying sharp
Had to find some for class and now I think they're super cool
Short and sweet. To the point.
TheDarkDen bread actually molds faster so it would technically be a better food source for spring tails
I started breeding my own local springtails and it works goooood
I also have two separate methods! Nice to see!
I love your haircut! 😊
Ty I definitely needed this info. Petko got a haircut 🤗. Tyfs God bless you
2 questions.
1. Where did you get the springtails to start your colony?
2. What’s the difference between springtails and isopods?

Hell yeah, nice haircut by the way. Classic🔥👌
This makes me curious to see videos on both isopod care and getting rid of mites. What do isopods bring to the table that springtails don't?
