  • A little over two years ago, I was at my local bike shop ordering a wheel for one of my road bikes. Over in the display area a bright green mountain bike caught my eye. It was a 2019 Specialized Rockhopper. Long story short, I made it about a mile from the shop, turned around, and bought it for $560.00 US.
Although this was a base level hardtail, and I have other mountain bikes, the Rockhopper accounted for about half of my trail riding in 2020. I ran it in stock 3x8 configuration for a year. Then, I started upgrading the components. As of March 2021, only the brakes and rolling stock remain stock. In fact, I decided to convert from an external dropper post to an internal one, a KS eTeni with 100mm of extension. The swap was about as easy as it gets.
The simple fact is, this is really fun bike! The costs and stock specifications are below.

Great video, made my dropper's inscrutable instructions clear. Look forward to riding my Rockhopper Sport with it, thanks for helping me get it done!

I have the rockhopper 2019, you have to move a little bit the transmission to find the hole on the post and use the internal routing.
Thank you so much for the video. Enjoy your bike ;-)

Just bought a new Rockhopper Comp 2023 plus a dropper post for it, and this video has been perfect for showing how the internal cable routing goes. Thanks!!

Thanks for the video. Was looking for a dropper for my son's Rockhopper XS, he is almost 11. Hopefully it will make it a bit easier for him when on the trails. We were just leaving his seat low for the time being and he looks a bit awkward trying to pedal the flats. Went with the Brand-X Ascend dropper.

Hi Jim, thanks for uploading this video, it's super helpful. I am installing a dropper post on a 2021 Rockhopper and having trouble with installing the cable housing. Can you confirm what is the outer diameter for your cable housing please? I have a suspicion that the stuff that came with my X-Fusion Manic dropper post might be too big for the frame's channels as I am unable to thread it in!

Hi, I put the calipers on it, and it's 4.1mm. Basically, just a standard shifter cable I got at my local bike shop.

I just looked at my 2021 Rockhopper and it has screws for a bottle holder in the way of the post on the seat tube. I can't even lower the stock post much further... how did you solve this?

    • @JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder
      @JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder  3 года назад +1

The problem is that the rivnut protrudes into the down tube. There are 2 solutions I can think of. Either a shorter non-droppper post (bearing in mind to transpose the minimum insertion depth) or drilling out the rivnut. Bike Teacher has a video on how to remove a rivnut.

@@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder thanks for your answer! do you have the exact specs of your dropper post maybe? I know its 30.9mm, and it seems like the stock post is 400 mm. But I think I'd use a smaller one with a 150 mm raise, but then I don't know what length to get...
Maybe you can give me a hint, else I'd take a look at my local bike shop.

@@TomyyY90 As I recall, the KS eTeni has a travel of 120mm. I'm unsure how long the base portion is, but it does not bottom out on the bottle cage studs.

Hey Jim. I’m installing a dropper right now with this as a tutorial. Easy to understand, however when inserting the cable into the seat tube, did you also insert it in the little plate under the bike with the 3 holes in it to for better cable routing?

    • @JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder

I used the frame hole near the head tube to start, routed it down the downtube and through the cable gap under the bottom bracket, then up the frame port on the seat tube. Much easier than on my Polygon Suskiu!

      Hi,
The cables for the rear brake and rear derailleur each go into one of the two downtube ports on the nondrive side. The dropper cable goes into one of the downtube ports on the drive side.

@@paulhughes3889 gotcha. I had to wiggle it around to get it through thevlarge port under the bottom bracket and then up the port on the back of the seat tube. I'm guessing you already looked for an obstruction.
