bagpipes are played once again in Turlock at the Junior High just down the road from where Ian Werner resides. He plays this cool summer evening the traditional "The Mason's Apron".
people should stop giving this comment a thumbs-down so much... i gave it a thumbs-up... i'll have to see what he is talking about, apparently at one minute and twenty three seconds.. however, even though he alerts everyone to my alleged mistake, he is only complimenting me on my ability to mask said mistake and incorporate it into the tune, like the pros do he says... i appreciate the acknowledgment
I love how Ian hits the bag and tunes the middle tenor drone...and stomps his foot, the way a pipe major would, and just kicks ass....you don't see that alot in these yourtube videos, and Ian, it REALLY helps a beginning piper ....you are awesome, and your piping is just brilliant....chris
OK, i went back and watched my video again. The E note you alert me to is NOT a mistake but entirely intentional. It's how I play the tune. Think of it this way: part 3 has C-shakes with arpeggios on E & F using LowA, then has D-shakes with similar movement using F & hG. It makes perfect sense, for me, to play part 4's C-shakes segment with arpeggios on hA-hG-E not F. F is already part of the hA-hG-F movement in the D-shakes area. I think the way i play it sound more logical and musical.
As a new 58 year old piper, I really appreciate the tunes you've posted. Mason's apron is a bit past my skill set at this point, but I am working on "Wife of the Old MIll Dust." Thanks for doing such a great job on that tune too.
0:25 was not a flub but a slight pause, as was the one at 0:58. they're intentional to keep the music sounding less linear feeling. thanks for the thoughtful commentary however.
ian r w Hey, I've been practicing this tune from viper piper and have learned the first 2 parts. It only has 4 parts though and you seem to play 8. Could you please link me to your sheet music for masons apron? I'd really appreciate it, so I could learn to play it like you do.
Could someone point in the direction of getting the sheet music for this version please? Or if you have a copy maybe share it with me? Many thanks and happy piping ☮️❤️
Do you still have the video where you are playing and my buddies and I were riding behind you and dancing? It was a few years back but we met you at the junior high and had a pretty good time.
Anyone know where I can find the music for the 5th part he plays. I have looked at several different versions of this tune and they all have 4 parts. I would really like to learn the 5th part even though it appears to not be an original part of this tune.
What makes you chose the bent blowstick over the straight one? I've been contemplating buying one like yours. Is it just personal preference? Or is it something to do with being comfortable?
Well done. Nice sounding pipes. Good control. This must be the third video I have watched where the setting of the tune is different. Have you tried doing the finger sweep near the end? Really fun movement to do :)
hey I've only been piping a year with my school's band. Have to ask how good would rate yourself? you're one of the best of the best I've heard and I saw the tattoo at Edinburgh this summer. haha they were good. Anyway what level would you rate yourself?
how so... i know that it's not just the simple 2 parted cut and held reel version that one can find in the scot's guards book -- is that the traditional version of which you refer?
I thought it was well done. Everyone is a critic......yet, we are our own worst critic. As a piper, we critique ourselves worse than any comments here. Cant we just enjoy each others well accomplished projects? Well done lad.....
great vid, funny to see moving your body with Masons apron. And of course the last reaction, with the eyes. I looks like that you're saying : 'Nice, it could better, could worse'
Hi I just want to say excellent interpretation of this tune. very enjoyable to listen to. one piece of advice though. When u make a mistake try not to show it by the expression on your face. If u did that in competition then the judges would totally annihilate u. other than that well played. hope to hear more of you in the future
Hi , om absolutly stunned About The sound of bagpipes , but can someone explain me how à bagpipe works sometimes you saw him stop blowing air in it but there was still that sound ( sorry for my stupid question ) and btw very Nice perform mate keep it up
The air in the bag keeps the sound going, but the air is passing through the drones and the reed so you have to keep blowing into the bag to keep it full. And you have to maintain a steady pressure.
Ninja Pwease it's called a Pele. To try to make it simple, you play G gracenote on D, followed by an E gracenote on D, and then a D strike. Getting it up to speed takes time. Cheers
thank you sir... ok, spill it... who are you? you must be a world-class player or at least a piper of some reknown to comment on my video such as you did. Other people, of lower musical ability, wouldn't have necessarily commented on not only my tempo but the tuning part as well. Or maybe I'm way off here ;o)
There are different variations to practically every piping tune. this is the version that I and many other people who play the pipes have been taught. For all you know the "original" you claim to know could be the one that isn't the original. Even if this isn't the original it isn't disrespectful. unless you have the very first copy that was written and I highly doubt you do you can't and don't ha e the right to say this isn't the "original". I find you saying that disrespectful.
not sure why Masons would find a highly skilled and articulate craftsman playing pipes so beautifully would be anything other than overjoyed at the amount of enlightened impro put into a basic 32 bar reel - and by the bagpipes ?
Very impressive performance of a very difficult tune. Great pacing also. Very well done
Best sounding instrument in the world and very well played mate...Well done :) 10 million thumbs up as far as i'm concerned

You cant play wrong notes a solo piper as long as you can play the mistake with confides 😂😂
The way you play it is amazing. Do you happen to have it written down?
Makes everyone 😊

This song made me smile the whole way through, especially the end part, thanks ian!
Learning this one ,awesome tune
its harmony resounding in your ears, specially with a well tuned bagpipe ^^
Very well played. Good control, you're not rushing doublings etc. That's what I love about your playing, every note clear and strong.
I’m here every single week listening you playing this tune, the best performance (for me) I’m just trying to play this one, is really hard.
Holy hell that was magnificent, Ian you're a legend
i've known itchy fingers for years, one of the first few tunes i ever heard/learned (pertaining to bagpipes that is) i just never think to play it...

Super. Brawo!!

amazing, good job
I heard it once that the definition of a gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipes, but wont.... nonetheless... not too shabby
What makes you chose the bent blowstick over the straight one? I've been contemplating buying one like yours. Is it just personal preference? Or is it something to do with being comfortable?
Very impressive
amazing!

@tomr6634 Appreciate the input, but realise I posted that comment 12 years ago. And I did give him compliments back then. Just saying.
Freemason Pied Piper? I thought Freemasons Played The Flute.

It’s done with pulleys and mirrors
whats the name of the embellishment on the start of the third part?
Ninja Pwease it's called a Pele. To try to make it simple, you play G gracenote on D, followed by an E gracenote on D, and then a D strike. Getting it up to speed takes time. Cheers
i know it as a "shake"
is it creepy i remember walking by when this was being recorded? at the school of pipes right?
yes.
The best piper of the world
Och see you, Jimmie..!

david naill drones, cane drone reeds, sheepskin bag, gibson chanter, ross chanter reed
@picopanpipe9 Your unsolicited and unqualified public critique of this exceptional piper is what was uncalled for.
coolio!
Itchy Fingers is too easy a tune compared to the Apron...this equates to asking YoYoMa to play Mary Had a Little Lamb....excellent work
your playing
lol the facial expression s tho XD
Although it takes an Ulsterman to play the bagpipes, this guy isn't too bad! :-)
Decent attempt. Good fingers nice and crisp, you just need to play the tune a few hundred times more so you can play it without thinking
as a Modest piper once said... haha
Sorry, I meant the comment from Prodli2002..(not your first comment)
Thanks Once Again.
yeah go irish I am whole Irish not joking
Arrrrgh!!!!
Sounds good, but you played parts 4 & 5 the wrong way round and you forgot to play part 6! Other than that it was great! ;)
Nice playing... nothing traditional about this setting of the tune though.
that is not the original im happy my dad is not watching this version because its disrespectful to Masons
I'd be really curious what you interpret as "the original"
Jeremy Kingsbury exactly
There are different variations to practically every piping tune. this is the version that I and many other people who play the pipes have been taught. my own live version on fiddle is very fast but not that Masonic as it doesn't have the extra impro stuff
